- World Kidney Day is observed on 12 March.
- It is celebrated on the second Thursday of March every year.
- The day aims to create awareness and educate people about the importance of kidneys to overall health and to reduce the frequency and impact of kidney disease and associated health problems worldwide.
- As a part of the 2020 campaign, the #MyGr8Rule challenge was launched on 8 February.
- Theme: The theme of the 2020 World Kidney day is “Kidney Health for Everyone Everywhere–from Prevention to Detection and Equitable Access to Care.”
Highlights:
- The day highlights that diabetes and high blood pressure are key risk factors for chronic kidney disease (CKD).
- It encourages the systematic screening of all patients with diabetes and hypertension for CKD.
- It also encourages preventive behaviors and educate all healthcare professionals about their key role in detecting and reducing the risk of CKD.
- The day encourages transplantation as a best-outcome option for kidney failure, and the act of organ donation as a life-saving initiative.

GoI constituted a high-level GOM to review prevention and management of Coronovirus
- GoI has constituted a high-level Group of Ministers (GOM) to review, monitor, and evaluate the current preparedness and measures taken regarding the management of Novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19).
- The GOM was constituted upon the directions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi
Highlights:
- The members discussed the actions taken for the prevention and management of COVID-19 in India.
- The members undertook elaborate discussions on the various other precautionary measures which may be considered in the interest of the citizens of India.
- The members verified if regular handholding, monitoring, advisories, guidelines, etc. are being done with the States/UTs.
WHO declared COVID-19 a pandemic
- The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, a “pandemic” on 11 March.
- The infectious disease has spread freely in more than 100 countries around the world.
- In January, WHO declared the COVID-19 outbreak as a “global health emergency.
- ” WHO’s highest level of alarm reserves for the most sudden, serious, unexpected outbreaks that cross international borders and might require a coordinated response between countries.
Pandemic-Definition:
- According to WHO, a new disease that is spread worldwide and the determination is made based on the geographic spread of a disease, the severity of illnesses it causes, and its effects on society are defined as “pandemic.”
COVID-19:
- SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, is suspected of having spread from an animal host to humans in Wuhan, China. Initially, most cases were seen within China and among people who had traveled there, and the travelers’ close contacts. The contagious has quickly spread globally. The novel coronavirus that emerged in China in 2019 has sickened more than 121,000 people and killed over 4,300. The COVID-19 illness caused by the virus has spread to more than 100 countries around the globe.

Tamil Nadu hosts Divya Kala Shakti for the first time
- Tamil Nadu State government is to host the first-ever regional event “Divya Kala Shakti: Witnessing the abilities in disabilities a unique cultural” event at Kalaivanar Arangam, Chennai.
- The event will be witnessed by Governor of Tamil Nadu Shri Banwarilal Purohit.
Organizing Team:
- The event is organized by the National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities (Divyangjan) (NIEPMD), Chennai, in collaboration with the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyagjan), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, GoI.
Event Highlights:
- The cultural event will bring together children and youth with Differently Abled from all the five Southern zone, namely Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Lakshadweep, and Puducherry.
- Divya Kala Shakti will provide a unique platform to showcase the potential of Persons with Differently Abled in the field of performing art, music, dance, acrobatics, etc.
- The cultural event will host artistic performance, including dance, music, instrumental in classical, folk, and modern style. It also includes Yoga and Acrobatics for the first time.
Participants:
- Around 1000 invitees including Persons with Disabilities, Parents of Persons with Differently Abled, teachers, care-givers and NGOs, etc. are participating in the event. A large number of women are taking part in the event.
Background:
- Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has already organized two National events on 18 April 2019 and 23 July 2019, respectively, at President’s House and Parliament Library Building, New Delhi. The aim of the event is to spread a wide awareness and witnessed the innate talent in all Divyang children and youth.

Leh to host the national event for the 6th International Day of Yoga
- Leh is to host the main national event for the sixth International Day of Yoga (IDY) on 21 June 2020.
- The events on the day will be led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
- This was announced by the Union Minister of AYUSH Shripad Naik.
IDY 2020:
- It is expected that a large congregation of around 15,000 to 20,000 people will participate in the high altitude location like Leh for the first time.
- There will be a 45-minute yoga drill based on Common Yoga Protocol (CYP) during the event.
- Prime Minister Modi is expected to carry out ‘yogasanas’ based on CYP.
- The plans are being implemented by various industrial bodies, including CII and FICCI, educational bodies like CBSE, UGC, and NCERT, among other stakeholders.
Maharashtra implements happy hour for autorickshaws
- Maharashtra State government approved the implementation of “happy hour” for autorickshaws.
- The move was recommended by Khatua panel, which is led by retired IAS officer BC Khatua and the four-members of the panel.
Happy hour:
- The government resolution stated that fares would be slashed by 15% between 12 noon and 4 pm, barring the minimum fare first 1.5 km.
- It is applicable only for autorickshaws and not to local taxis and app-based taxis.
- The panel stated that it would turn lean hours to happy hours, especially for housewives and senior citizens.
- The move is opposed by the autorickshaw unions of the state.

Andhra govt launches “NIGHA” app to ensure ‘clean and healthy’ elections
- The Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has launched ‘NIGHA’ app to ensure ‘clean and healthy’ elections by curbing the use of money and alcohol in the upcoming local body elections.
- The Panchayat Raj Department, in a bid to crackdown on electoral malpractices, has set up the NIGHA app to empower common citizens to lodge complaints seamlessly.
- Photos and videos of the distribution of money and alcohol and any other activity that violates the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) can be registered by this app.
- All the complaints registered by this app will automatically be routed to the Central Control room and the information will be shared with the concerned officials.

- This festival is celebrated to mark the end of winter or the beginning of spring.
- It is celebrated in the entire valley on the moonless night or Amavasya.

High court of Bangladesh declares ‘Joy Bangla’ as national slogan
- The High Court of Bangladesh has ordered that ‘Joy Bangla’ will be the national slogan of Bangladesh.
- The court also directed the authorities to ensure that teachers and students use the slogan after assembly.
- The two-judge bench of High Court asked the authorities to take necessary steps so that all the people holding constitutional posts and state officials use ‘Joy Bangla’ after their speeches on national days and other appropriate occasions.
- ‘Joy Bangla’ was the main slogan during the liberation war of Bangladesh fought against Pakistan in 1971.

GoI, World Bank signs loan agreement on Integrated Project for Source Sustainability and Climate Resilient
- The World Bank signed an $80 million loan agreement with the Government of India, Government of Himachal Pradesh on 11 March 2020.
- The aim is to improve water management practices and increase agricultural productivity in selected Gram Panchayats in Himachal Pradesh.
- The loan from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) has a final maturity of 14.5 years, including a grace period of 5 years.
Highlights:
- The Integrated Project for Source Sustainability and Climate Resilient Rain-Fed Agriculture will be implemented in 428 Gram Panchayats in 10 districts in Himachal Pradesh.
- The project includes setting up of hydrological monitoring stations to monitor water quality and quantity.
- It is expected that it will benefit over 400,000 smallholder farmers, including women, and pastoral communities.
- The project aims to make the best use of all available technologies and resources to increase water-use efficiency.
- The project will enhance the climate resilience of agriculture and its allied activities and also ensure sufficient water is available for sustainable agriculture both in Himachal Pradesh and in downstream states.
