Why is this important?
'Idiom' means 'one of a kind' and indicates that a phrase is being used with a special meaning that can be very different to the literal meaning.
It's actually impossible to avoid idiomatic language altogether, and many expressions which seem natural to a native speaker have a metaphorical meaning which, once understood, clarifies the expression for learners.
