World Bank offers
$400 mn loan for TN urban development project
- The World Bank has extended $400 million loan for Tamil Nadu Sustainable Urban Development Project.
- The loan and project agreements for the IBRD assistance were signed between the Central Government, Government of Tamil Nadu and the World Bank here on Thursday.
- The objective of the project is to improve urban services in participating Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in a financially sustainable manner and to pilot improved urban management practices in selected cities.
- The total project size is $600 million, out of which the World Bank's support is $400 million.
India and Belarus
signed six Agreements during the visit of President to Belarus
- India and Belarus on 3 June 2015 inked six agreements to boost ties and relationship based on friendship and mutual benefit. The agreements were inked in presence of President Pranab Mukherjee, who is on a two-day state visit to Belarus, viz., from 3 June – 4 June 2015.
- The two-day visit to Belarus is part of Mukherjee’s five-day visit to Belarus and Sweden that started on 31 May 2015.

- MoU on Bilateral Cooperation between the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and the Ministry of Finance, Belarus
- MoU for Manufacturing and Marketing of Light Industry Goods (concern "Bellegprom”) between the Ministry of Textiles of India and the Belarusian State concern.
Delhi Metro Recieves
Its First Driver-Less Train From Korea
- Delhi Metro today received its first driver-less train, equipped with several advanced features, from a Korea-based manufacturer, which will ply on sections of Phase-III of the network, set to be operational by next year end.
- The six-coach train that was ferried to India by sea, arrived at Gujarat's Mundhra port and was brought by road to Delhi on specially-made trailers.
- A total of 20 such train sets of Hyundai Rotem will be manufactured in South Korea's Changwan by the end of this year while the remaining 61 are being manufactured at the Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) plant in Bengaluru, the DMRC said.
- They would run on the over 58 km-long Majlish Park-Shiv Vihar (Line 7) and the over 38 km-long Janakpuri (West)- Botanical Garden (Line 8) corridors of the Phase-III, and both these sections are expected to be operational by the end of 2016.
- These new trains of Delhi Metro have undergone significant technological as well as eco-friendly upgrades and many additional features have been added to increase passenger comfort.

Snapdeal collaborates
with gojavas to launch ‘90 mins reverse pick-up’
- Snapdeal, an online marketplace and gojavas, a supply-chain company, today announced the launch of an industry first service for customers - ‘90 minutes reverse pick-ups’.
- With this, Snapdeal customers wishing to return/replace their online orders will be reached within 90 minutes of intimation. The facility, which is currently live in 15 cities, will enable hassle-free returns as well as refunds.
- The 90-minute reverse pick-up facility is a continuing collaborative effort to design insightful logistics solutions that strengthen their supply chain infrastructure.

Meena Hemchandra
appointed as executive director of RBI
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed Meena Hemchandra as the executive director who would be in charge of department of banking supervision. She will also be in charge of department of non-banking supervision and department of co-operative banking supervision.
- RBI's executive director Chandan Sinha, who was incharge of these departments will now be in charge of department of information technology, department of payment and settlement system, foreign exchange department and financial markets regulations departments- including market intelligence.
- The appointment of Meena Hemchandra comes as a vacancy for the post was created after G Padmanabhan retired on May 31 this year. RBI has 11 executive director in charge of various departments.
Ex-IB chief Asif
Ibrahim appointed as PM's special envoy on counter-terror
- Signalling its growing concern over IS terror and radicalisation, the government has appointed the former Intelligence Bureau Chief Asif Ibrahim to a key post in the Prime Minister’s office.
- Mr. Ibrahim, who retired in December 2014, will be the PM’s ‘Special Envoy on Countering Terrorism and Extremism,’ with a charter to liaise with governments in West Asia.
- Mr. Ibrahim will be well versed with setting up channels for the exchange of intelligence and information on terror groups, but will face challenges when it comes to the engagement with governments in situations as diverse as the Gulf, Af-Pak region and south-east Asian Islamic countries.

India Jumps Six Spots
to 141 in New FIFA Rankings
- India today rose six places to occupy the 141st position in the latest world football rankings issued by the game's governing body FIFA.
- India, who were placed 147th previously, are lying at the 22nd spot among the Asian countries.
- Iran (41) are the top-ranked Asian team in the latest FIFA rankings, followed by Japan (52) and South Korea (58).
- World champions Germany has managed to hold on to the top spot ahead while, at No. 2, Belgium reached their highest position since the launch of FIFA rankings.
- World Cup runners-up Argentina are placed third, while five-time world champions Brazil are fifth, a spot below Colombia.
- Brazil are followed by the Netherlands (6), Portugal (7), Uruguay (8), France (9) and 2010 World Cup champions Spain (10).
Poovamma, Joseph win
silver medals in Asian Athletics Championships
- Machettira Raju Poovamma and Liksy Joseph won silver each as India added four medals on the second day of the 21st Asian Athletics Championships on Thursday.
- Poovamma, who had also won silver in the last edition in 2013, clocked 53.07 seconds in women’s 400m finals to finish second behind China’s Yang Huizhen (52.37) and was followed by Anastasiya Kudinova (53.41) of Kazakhstan.
- Joseph, who was trailing at sixth place at the end of opening day on Wednesday, cleared 6.19m in long jump on Thursday to move up to third place. Although she could not do well in javelin throw, Liksy won the 800m race, the last of her seven events, with a time of 2:13.44 and that brought her the silver medal with personal best of 5,554 points.
- Teammate and former Asian junior champion Purnima Hembram got bronze with 5511 points.
- G. Lakshmanan got a bronze medal in a hard fought men’s 5000m race with a personal best of 13:36.62. Lakshmanan, employed with Indian Army, improved his previous best by almost 14 seconds.
- The women’s sprint relay quartet of Dutee Chand, Srabani Nanda, G.M. Padmini and Sini Sahadevan missed a medal by finishing fourth with a time of 45.72 seconds.
- The men’s 4x100m relay team finished sixth in 39.67 seconds and Manikanda Arumugam, who was controversially included in the relay squad, did not run the race.

Bahrain Awards Indian
Entrepreneur for Efforts in Social Service
- An Indian social entrepreneur and philanthropist has been conferred the prestigious USD 1 million 'Isa Award for Service to Humanity' by Bahrain's King, recognising his efforts to eradicate poverty, hunger and illiteracy in India.
- Prof Achyuta Samanta, founder and director of Odisha-based Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences, was given the award by King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa yesterday.
- Presenting the award, also carrying a gold medal and a certificate of merit, the King appreciated the efforts of Samanta, 50.
