Current Affairs Update – 22nd June, 2015

• National Stock Exchange (NSE) on 22 June 2015 operationalised the Overnight Liquid Transaction facility on its web-based Mutual Fund Service System (MFSS) platform. The platform was launched on 19 June 2015.
• The facility allows the participants to place purchase and redemption orders simultaneously in liquid schemes. This facility will only be available on MFSS Web based platform and in Physical mode only.
• Further, all liquid schemes allowed by respective asset management companies will be available for placing orders.
• MFSS is an online order collection system provided by the NSE to its eligible members for placing subscription or redemption orders.

• Retirement fund body EPFO today notified an order to make Universal Account Number (UAN) mandatory for all employers covered under the Employees Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act 1952.
• The government was considering the proposal to make UAN mandatory for availing of benefit of the scheme. The UAN facility was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in October last year.
• The deadline for completing the formalities is August 25 after which action will be taken under the powers given to us by the Employees Provident Funds Scheme, 1952, and other applicable laws for failure to comply with the order.
• The UAN remains portable throughout the lifetime of an employee and they don't have to apply for PF transfer claims at changing jobs.
• It is even more beneficial for workers in the construction sector, who often change their contractor after short span of time and take up new jobs after fining one contract.
• The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) had issued over four crore UANs to employers across the country in July last year.

• China on Monday opened the second land crossing in Tibet via Nathu La to allow the first batch of Indian pilgrims undertaking the arduous Kailash-Manasarovar Yatra, in the latest confidence-building measure between the two neighbours.
• The opening of the second route through the Himalayan pass of Nathu La in Sikkim, 4,000 metres above sea level, was officially announced during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to China last month and will allow more Indians to undertake the pilgrimage.
• The new route is in addition to the existing Lipulekh Pass, the only route that was badly damaged in the floods in Uttarakhand in 2013.
• A total of 44 pilgrims crossed over from the Indian side of the border in Sikkim on Monday as the first batch of the annual Yatra through this border route and were warmly welcomed by Chinese officials in Tibet.
• The pilgrims belonging to different age-groups and hailing from various parts of India made their way to the Nathu La pass after a two week-long journey acclimatising themselves for the high-altitude journey to Kailash which stands at an altitude of about 6,500 metres in Tibet.

• HAL has delivered ‘Orbiter Craft Module Structure’ of Chandrayaan-2 to ISRO Satellite Centre (ISAC).
• Chandrayaan-2 is a two module configuration spacecraft comprising of the ‘Orbiter Craft’ and the ‘Lander Craft’.
• The Chandrayaan-2 mission is aimed at placing an Orbiter around the moon and sending a Lander and Rover to the surface of the moon. It will be launched by a Geo-Stationary Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-MKII).
• HAL has partnered and supported ISRO throughout its journey by providing hardware for satellites, SLV, ASLV, PSLV, GSLVMKII and GSLV MKIII (LVM3).
• HAL's association with India's space program dates back to early 70s, when HAL provided technical inputs and manufacturing support to ISRO for realisation of light alloy structural assemblies for satellites and launch vehicle.

• The European Union has extended economic sanctions against Russia until January to keep pressure on Moscow over the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
• An EU statement confirmed on Monday that the decision had been taken by Foreign Ministers meeting in Luxembourg without debate, in response to “Russia’s destabilizing role in eastern Ukraine.”
• The sanctions include limits to access on some financial markets, a ban on certain technologies and exchanges between the bloc and Russia in energy and defence sectors. Enacted last July and reinforced in September, the sanctions had been due to expire in July.
• They are now expected to expire on Jan. 31.
• Fighting between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed rebels has killed more than 6,400 people and persists despite a cease-fire agreed in February.

• EU foreign ministers formally approved today the launch of the first phase of a military operation against people smugglers in the Mediterranean, officials said.
• The first ships and aircraft to conduct intelligence gathering missions should be available within a week, officials said.
• EU foreign affairs head Federica Mogherini said the 28-nation bloc had responded quickly to the crisis washing up on its southern shores.
• There have been serious differences among member states over how to handle the thousands of migrants crossing the Mediterranean, with Italy, Greece and Malta bearing the brunt of the burden until the loss of up to 800 people in April when their rickety boat sank and forced a re-think.
• EU leaders agreed at an emergency summit that month to formulate a comprehensive plan to tackle the problem at source, including a military option to go after the people traffickers working out of Libya.

• The book Benazir Bhutto: A Multidimensional Portrait was released on 26 May 2015. It was written by Dr Anna Suvorova of Russia.
• The book is devoted to the life and work of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto (1953-2007). She was the first female head of government in a Muslim state.
• The book is based on Bhutto's own books, articles and speeches and on the author's interviews with her close friends and colleagues.

• The book Beyond Doubt: A Dossier on Gandhi's Assassination was in news in the third week of June 2015.
• It was compiled and introduced by Indian civil rights activist Teesta Setalvad and published by Tulika Books.
• It is a collection of archival documents of the government and translation of works in Marathi, Guajarati and Hindi related to assassination of Mahatma Gandhi on 30 June 1948.
• In the book, the author tried to de-construct the ideology responsible for the killing.

• Swiss tennis ace Roger Federer won the 2015 Gerry Weber Open tennis title on 21 June 2015 at the Gerry Weber Stadium in Halle, Germany.
• In the summit clash, he defeated Andreas Seppi of Italy 7-6 (1), 6-4 to claim the title for record eighth time. With this, Seppi became the first Italian to play the final at Halle since the tournament began in 1993.
• In the Men’s doubles category, Indo-Romanian pair Rohan Bopanna and Florin Mergea was the runners up.

• Britain’s Andy Murray on 21 June 2015 won the men’s singles of the Aegon Championships at the Queen’s Club in West Kensington, England. In the final clash, Murray defeated South African Kevin Anderson 6-3, 6-4.
• This was his fourth Queen’s title and the previous were won in alternate years, that is, 2009, 2011 and 2013.
• With this win, Murray joined an illustrious list of champions including John McEnroe, Lleyton Hewitt, Boris Becker and Andy Roddick, the winners of four Queen's Club Championships.
