Finance –


India slips to 61st place on Swiss money list; Pak at 73rd


  • India has moved down to 61st place in terms of foreigners’ money in Swiss banks and it now accounts for a meagre 0.123 per cent of the total global wealth worth USD 1.6 trillion in Switzerland’s banking system.
  • While the UK and the US have retained their top two positions with the largest shares of the foreign clients’ money with Swiss banks, Pakistan has inched up to 73rd place.
  • Interestingly, just two big banks — UBS and Credit Suisse — account for nearly two-third of the total money kept by foreigners in Swiss banks, while their share in case of Indians is even higher at about 82 per cent.
  • As per the latest data released by Switzerland’s central banking authority SNB (Swiss National Bank), Indians’ money in Swiss banks declined by over 10 per cent to about 1.8 billion Swiss francs (USD 1.98 billion or Rs. 12,615 crore) in 2014.
  • This accounts for just 0.123 per cent of the total funds kept in the Swiss banks by people from across the world.
  • This is the second lowest level of Indian money in Swiss banks — after an increase of over 40 per cent in 2013 — and the latest data comes amid an enhanced clampdown against the famed secrecy wall of Switzerland’s banking system.



American company BrightSKY to invest Rs 500 crore in Chhattisgarh

  • Florida-based American company BrightSKY would set up a plant in Chhattisgarh for manufacturing electronics and telecom products.
  • The company inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to execute the proposal. The plant proposed to come up in the Naya Raipur, the upcoming new capital city of Chhattisgarh and would manufacture light-emitting diode (LED) bulb, telecom and 4G WiFi devices.
  • The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of BrightSKY, Nick Shevillo said the company had expertise in manufacturing telecom, cellular and LED devises.
  • The company officials said effective and advanced LED system, and devices would be made available in the state. They said the new generation 4G internet network should be spread across the country. High speed internet service should be provided in the remote areas of the Bastar region, they added.
  • Under the MoU clauses, the American company would be investing Rs 500 crore in the project. It would generate direct and indirect employment for over 600 people.

PM Narendra Modi leads Yoga Day celebrations, says a 'new era' starts


  • Leading the first International Yoga Day celebrations in the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said it marks the dawn of a "new era" to bring peace and harmony in the world.
  • India set two Guinness world records on Sunday with the Yoga mass session at Rajpath in new Delhi -- one for largest number of participants and another for the most number of nationalities at a single event.
  • A yoga enthusiast himself, the Prime Minister surprised everyone as he joined over 35,000 people, including leaders, officials, soldiers and students, in a yoga demonstration at the historic Rajpath this morning.
  • The day was observed in over 251 cities in 191 countries across the world and the Indian missions and diplomatic posts have made arrangements for the celebrations and other related events.
  • External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj was in New York to participate in the Yoga Day celebrations at the United Nations.
  • Union Ministers fanned out across the country for Yoga Day events. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh addressed a mass yoga session at K D Singh Babu stadium in Lucknow. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari was in Nagpur and Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda in Hyderabad. BJP President Amit Shah attended an event in capital of poll-bound Bihar.
  • Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar was in Meerut. Top defence officers led by Army Chief Dalbir Singh Suhag, Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha and Navy's Admiral R K Dhowan were present at the Rajpath.

India –

Govt to launch 1st One-Stop Crisis Centre under Nirbhaya Fund in Chhattisgarh


  • The first One-Stop Crisis Centre for women in distress out of the proposed 660 is set to be inaugurated in Chhattisgarh later this month under the Nirbhaya Fund.
  • A Women and Child development ministry’s initiative, the Centre would act as a one-stop facility to provide all kinds of aid to women in distress including medical help, counselling, legal and police assistance, while ensuring anonymity of the victim.
  • The scheme is being implemented on the recommendations of a committee that was set up in the aftermath of the public uproar against the December 16 gang-rape.
  • The Centre will be mandated to provide legal, medical and psychological assistance to distressed women. Proposed to be established in a phased manner, in the first phase, such facilities will be set up in every state, and will gradually be expanded to every district.
  • These centres would be set up in independent buildings or hospitals, depending on the state government’s preference.



India's first air-conditioned DEMU train launched in Kochi


  • Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu today flagged off India's first diesel electric multiple unit (DEMU) train service with an air-conditioned coach here.
  • The Angamaly-Ernakulam-Tripunithura-Piravom train service is expected to help in reducing traffic congestion in the state's fastest growing city.
  • Top Railway officials said the AC coach provides reclining type comfortable cushion seats for 73 passengers similar to air-conditioned chair car of inter-city express trains.
  • Other coaches of DEMU train are provided with bench type cushion seats and large windows with glass shutters.
  • The train is equipped with bio-toilets and fully vestibule for free movement of passengers between coaches.


Awards & Honors –


Swathi Puraskar Given To Ustad Amjad Ali Khan

  • Kerala Government's highest honour for music, Swathi Puraskar, has been awarded this year to Ustad Amjad Ali Khan for his outstanding contribution to Indian music.
  • The award will be presented to the sarod maestro by Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in August. The announcement was made by K C Joseph, Kerala Culture Minister.
  • A five-member committee headed by Soorya Krishnamoorthy, chairman of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy took the decision to confer the honour to Amjad Ali Khan. The Academy is under the Department of Culture in the Kerala government.
  • The award is named after the great composer Maharaja Swathi Thirunal. Earlier awardees included Pandit Jasraj, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi and Ustad Bismillah Khan. The award includes citation, Rs one lakh and a trophy.



Carnatic singer S Subrahmanyan selected for Sangita Kalanidhi Award

  • Renowned Carnatic singer Sanjay Subrahmanyan will be honoured with the Sangita Kalanidhi Award of the Music Academy.
  • The decision was taken at the meeting of the Executive Committee here, said President N Murali, adding, Subrahmanyan will also preside over the 89th Annual Conference of the Academy slated between December 15 and January 1, next year.
  • The Committee has also decided to confer other awards during the concert, such as Sangita Kala Acharya and TTK Awards.

Sanjay Deshmukh appointed Vice-Chancellor of Mumbai University

  • Maharashtra Governor and Chancellor of Universities in the state Ch Vidyasagar Rao Saturday appointed professor Sanjay Vasant Deshmukh as the new Vice-Chancellor (V-C) of the University of Mumbai.
  • According to an official release from Raj Bhavan, the appointment of Dr Deshmukh, a professor of Life Sciences in the University of Mumbai, will be for a term of five years, with effect from July 7, 2015. Dr Deshmukh will take over from Dr Rajan Welukar, whose controversial term will end on July 6.

India Settle for Bronze in Snooker World Cup

  • India settled for a bronze medal after narrowly missing the final berth of the Snooker World Cup here today.
  • Up against a seasoned Scotland side, India, comprising 12-time world champion Pankaj Advani and Aditya Mehta, went down 3-4 in the best-of-seven semifinal match.
  • Scotland, which had defeated hosts and defending champions China 'A', consisted of heavyweights in four-time world champion John Higgins and top snooker player Stephen Maquire.
  • Placed third in the prestigious event, this is India's best finish in the competition.



Obituaries –

Former Indian Hockey Captain Shashi Bala Killed in Accident

  • Former Indian women hockey team captain, Shashi Bala, was among the three persons killed in a car accident today near Kahma village here.
  • The incident occurred when the car in which 47-year-old Bala was travelling with her son, daughter and a driver, collided head on with another vehicle coming from an opposite direction near Kahma village here, police said.
  • The other two deceased persons were identified as Bala's son Agrim (14) and car driver Attar Singh (35), they said.
  • Bala's daughter Varnika (20) was too critically injured in the accident and was rushed to a local hospital here, they said.
  • Shashi Bala was a former captain for Indian hockey team for women and was presently posted as hockey coach for RCF Kapurthala.
