PM Visit to China –

India and China Signed 24 Agreements To Enhance Bilateral Co-operaton


  • India and China on 15 May 2015 signed 24 agreements to augment bilateral co-operation between the two countries.
  • The agreements were signed in the presence of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese  Premier Li Keqiang in Beijing, China.
  • The details of agreements covering the fields of Education, Railways, People-to-People exchanges, skill development, Security among others were outlined in the Joint Statement issued by the two leaders after the conclusion of bilateral talks.

Indian-American boy Karan Menon won 2015 National Geographic Bee Championship


  • Karan Menon, a 14-year-old Indian-American student, on 13 May 2015 won the 2015 National Geographic Bee championship. Menon answered all questions correctly related to places like Tashkent, Telangana and the Oresund Strait.
  • In addition to winning the title of National Geographic Bee champion, Menon received a 50000 US dollars college scholarship, lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society and an expedition for two to the Galapagos Islands aboard the Lindblad ship National Geographic Endeavour.


13-Year Old Indian-Origin Inventor Working With Microsoft for Braille Printer

  • A 13-year-old Indian-origin boy, who invented a low-cost portable Braille printer, is now working with technology giant Microsoft to integrate it with Windows to make it easily accessible to the visually-impaired and plans to launch it commercially in November.
  • Shubham Banerjee, an eighth-grade student in Santa Clara, California was invited by Microsoft to showcase his Braigo 2.0 printer at a tech fair organised by the company here.
  • He is targeting a price point of 500 dollars or less for the printer to ensure affordability for organisations working for the visually-impaired in developing and least developed countries.
  • The young student has started working with a Windows team to integrate Braigo drivers with Windows for easy deployment.



Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore inaugurates India Pavilion at Cannes film fest


  • Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore on Thursday inaugurated the India Pavilion at the 68th Cannes International Film Festival here. He stressed the importance of movies in government campaigns like 'Make In India' and 'Skill India'.
  • The government is channelising that objective through campaigns like 'Make in India' and 'Skill India', and realises that the film industry is an important part of these campaigns given its tremendous potential towards job creation," Rathore said, according to a statement issued by Ficci.
  • Pointing to the Indian government's rigorous work towards providing a seamless work environment for the film industry by establishing a single-window clearance mechanism, he also announced plans of a center of excellence for gaming and visual effects.
  • The session also saw unveiling of the 46th IFFI, 2015 regulations and 'India Film Guide' by Rathore. The India Film Guide is a comprehensive booklet with information on policy initiatives by the government pertaining to film sector, the listing of Indian companies at Cannes Film Market, Indian films at Cannes and contacts of important people in the business of filmmaking



US Declares Its Capital 'No Drone Zone'

  • The US has declared its capital Washington, in particular some of the government buildings like the White House, Capitol Hill and the Pentagon, a "no drone zone", warning criminal penalties against violators.
  • The agency wants to ensure residents and tourists all understand that flying an unmanned aircraft in this area for any purpose is against the law, it said.
  • No drone zone covers particularly 15 miles radius of Ronald Reagan International Airport including some of the government buildings like the White House, Capitol Hill and the Pentagon.
  • Meanwhile, the Secret Service yesterday arrested a man who was flying a small drone in a park outside the White House.
  • The small red and black drone, about the length of an iPad, was flying about 100 feet in the air in Lafayette Park before officers intervened and instructed the individual to land it, the Secret Service said.



India –

MHRD Gave Nod For Setting Up IIIT in Nagpur, Maharashtra

  • Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) on 14 May 2015 gave an in-principle approval for setting up an IIIT (Indian Institute of Information Technology) in Nagpur, Maharashtra.
  • It will be the first IIIT to be set up in the state.
  • The IIIT will join a batch of national institutes which are set to come up in the city, namely the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Indian Institute of Management (IIM).
  • The setting up of these higher educational institutions in Nagpur is aimed at improving educational infrastructure in the backward Vidarbha region.

Arun Shrivastava assumes charge as Syndicate Bank MD & CEO


  • Arun Shrivastava today assumed charge as Managing Director & CEO of Syndicate Bank.
  • He was Executive Director of Bank of India, looking after Finance, Strategy & Planning, Large Corporate & Mid Corporate Business, Corporate Debt Restructuring, Project Finance & Syndication, Credit Monitoring & Asset Recovery, Publicity & Public Relations portfolios of the bank.
  • Earlier, Shrivastava was overseeing the foreign subsidiaries – BoI Indonesia and Botswana and joint venture – India Zambia Bank.
  • He holds a Masters Degree in Science. In addition, he is also a Certified Associate of Indian Institute of Bankers and AIBM.



Andhra Bank ED given additional charge as MD & CEO

  • Satish Kumar Kalra, Executive Director, Andhra Bank, has been given additional charge as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the bank.
  • According to a notification from the Ministry of Finance, Government of India, Kalra will hold the charge for a period of three months from the date of issue of the order or till the date of appointment of regular Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer or until further orders, whichever is the earliest.
  • The Chairman and Managing Director position fell vacant after C V Rajendran demitted the office of CMD on April 30, 2015 on superannuation.

Blues Legend B.B. King Dies at Age 89


  • B B King, the Blues legend who redefined an era with classics like The Thrill Is Gone, Please Love Me, and My Lucille, has died at the age of 89.
  • Kind died in his sleep at 9:40 pm on Thursday at his home in Las Vegas, AP reported quoting his attorney Brent Bryson.
  • Riley B King, better known to his fans around the globe as B B King, was born September 16, 1925, on a plantation in Itta Bena, Mississippi.
  • The musician was recently in hospital with a diabetes-related illness. He last tour in October last year was cancelled after he fell ill.
  • Considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time, King had named his Gibson ES-355 guitar as "Lucille".
  • The multiple Grammy award-winner was inducted into both the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
