- In South Central Asia – Afghanistan is a country that has been caught in war and fighting for decades.
- This is because in September 2001, nearly 3,000 people were killed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks that happened in New York and Washington in America. So, the United States decided to use their armed forces.
- The US militarily quickly removed the Taliban from power and promised to support democracy in the country. A new Afghan government was put in place.
- In early 2019, the US and the Taliban began peace talks aimed at finding a solution to the 17-year conflict in Afghanistan.
- US president Joe Biden announced in April 2021 that all American forces would leave the country completely by 11 September – exactly two decades after the 9/11 attacks.
- This made the entry of Taliban and the group has advanced rapidly across the country – gaining control and power.

- The Taliban are an extreme Islamic military group that is fighting for power in Afghanistan. They also ruled Afghanistan from 1996 – 2001.
- The Taliban’s strict laws and extreme punishments made them unpopular within the peoples in Afghanistan and also with other countries.
Why Taliban are fighting?
- Taliban are fighting because they want their leaders to be in charge of Afghanistan again, and they want to enforce their own strict version of Sharia, or Fundamental Law.
- So they started war against Afghanistan government and they captured many places of Afghanistan including its capital Kabul

- As a result of this war President Ashraf Ghani has left Afghanistan as Taliban closes in all major cities
- Taliban leader Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar is likely to be the new president of Afghanistan.
