World Environment Day 2020 Theme, Important Events:
Introduction:
Every year June 5 is celebrated as World Environment Day since the year 1974 when it was started by the United Nations to inspire and promote the entanglement of the government and citizens living in this society to focus on the environmental issues.
The activities of World Environment Day 2020 will be hosted by Colombia in partnership with Germany.
Theme of this year’s World Environment Day 2020 is “Biodiversity”.
United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) declared it a Time for Nature Campaign
Importance of Biodiversity and its Impacts on Humans:
(1) The Biodiversity consists of individual independent species which supports this life cycle of the ecosystem and contributes in providing clean and fresh air, water, good quality soil and a suitable climate which is known as Natural Service or Ecosystem Service.
(2) The demands of human beings have also increased due to rise in the population which resulted in deforestation, drastic climatic changes which caused the loss of biodiversity and led to the collapse of food and health system.
Activities in India held on World Environment Day 2020:
(1) The Central Government on the occasion of World Environment Day 2020 launched a scheme known as “Nagar Van” (Urban forest) Scheme whose aim is to implement the development of urban forests across the country over the span of 5 years.
(2) In Madhya Pradesh, a plantation drive named “Thank Mom” has been started on the premises of Social Justice and Disable Welfare Directorate on World Environment Day. The theme for this drive is “Time for Nature”, focussed on conservation of biodiversity across the state.
(3) In connection of World Environment Day 2020, a Rs 230 crores Noyyal River Rejuvenation Scheme was inaugurated in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu by the State Minister S P Velumani. The 180 km long tributary of the Cauvery River, arises in the Veliangiri foothills of the Western Ghats and ends in Noyyal village in Karur District.
(4) On the occasion of such an important day, Kerala’s first “Food Forest” is being prepared at Tribal Belts of Attapdy in Palakkad District. The project aims to provide food security to 192 tribal villages in Attapadi.
(5) Power Minister, R K Singh, initiated “#iCommit” Campaign on the occasion of World Environment Day. This initiative is a call the stakeholders and individuals to move towards energy, renewable energy, and sustainability to create a robust and resilient energy system in the future.
(6) Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri has launched three advisories on the occasion of World Environment Day 2020.
These advisories are: Advisory on Material Facilities for Municipal Solid Waste, Advisory on Landfill Reclaimation and a Draft Advisory on On-Site and Off-Site Sewage Management Practises.
On this occasion a toolkit for a communication campaign on faecal sludge management titled “Malasur-The Demon of Defeca” was also released.
(7) On this occasion Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), in partnership with the US Agency for International Development’s MAITREE program, launched the, “Health and Energy Efficient Buildings” initiative that will pioneer ways to make work placed healthier and greener.
