Dear EP’ians, Our Important Days and Themes section is divided into five segments. There are When? Why this date? Who? History Shots? Latest Shots?. Yes, we are going to seen when the day was declared, why we are remembering those days like reasons behind the chosen date who declared or introduced along with history about the day and latest details like themes, chief guest, hosting country etc. From these five segments, aspirants can know about the day very clear and this will helps you to answer the current events as well as static past events gk questions.
On May 01, International Workers Day (Labours Day) and Maharashtra Day are Celebrated
International Workers Day
First Segment – When?
- On May 1, 1890, the call encouraged May Day demonstrations took place in the United States and most countries in Europe.
- The first celebration in India was organized in Madras (now Chennai) on 1 May 1923.
Second Segment – Why this date?
- To commemorate the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago, May 1 was chosen as International Workers Day.
- There was a general strike for the eight-hour workday on the beginning on 1 May, 1886.
Third Segment – Who?
- The date was chosen in 1889 by the Marxist International Socialist Congress, which met in Paris.
Fourth Segment – History?
- The date had been chosen by the American Federation of Labor to continue an earlier campaign for the eight-hour day in the United States, which had culminated in the Haymarket affair, which occurred in Chicago on 4 May 1886.
- In the United States and Canada, a September holiday, called Labor or Labour Day, was first proposed in the 1880s.
Fifth Segment – Latest Shots?
- International Labours Day or workers day 2021 theme not announced. But theme for 2020 is “Maintaining Safety and Security at the Workplace”.
Maharashtra Day
First Segment – When?
- First Maharashtra Day was celebrated on May 01, 1960.
Second Segment – Why this date?
- The state of Maharashtra and Gujarat were formed according to the Bombay Reorganization Act, 1960 enacted by the Parliament of India on 25 April 1960. The act came into effect on 1 May 1960.
- So May 1 is declared as state formation date.
Third Segment – Who?
- Jawaharlal Nehru inaugurated the Maharashtra state ceremony on 1st may 1960.

Fourth Segment – History?
- A well known Chinese traveller Huan Tsang, who mentioned the name, Maharashtra was first in 7th century.
- The name is coined as: Maha = great, and Rakshtrika = Ratta, who ruled the Deccan region is pretty chiefs of tribe/dynasty from 753-983 .
- Indian States were separated based on languages through The States Reorganization Act, 1956 which defined boundaries for the states within India.

- Maharashtra have the famous Ajanta Ellora Caves that is also one of the UNESCO as World Heritage Site.
