On April 25, We are celebrating World Malaria Day!
First Segment – When?
- First World Malaria Day was celebrated on April 25, 2008.
Second Segment – Why this date?
- Initially Africa Malaria Day was commemorated on 25th April since 2001.
- The Abuja Declaration was signed at the African Summit on Malaria 2000 on this date April 25th.
Third Segment – Who?
- 60th session of the World Health Assembly, WHO’s decision-making body established World Malaria Day in May 2007.
Fourth Segment – History?
- E-2020 initiative was launched in 2017,
- Through E 2020 WHO has supported 21 countries in their efforts to get to zero malaria cases within the 2020 timeline.
- India has been the only high indigenous country that reported a decline of 17.6% in 2019 compared to previous years.
- India has seen a 71.8% drop in malaria cases and 73.9% deaths between 2000 to 2019.
- It has also achieved a reduction of 83.34% in malaria morbidity and 92% in malaria mortality in these 9 years.

- World Malarial Day Theme 2021 – “Zero Malaria – Draw the Line Against Malaria”
- World Malaria Day 2021 will unify and build on the ‘Zero Malaria Starts with Me’ movement and the ‘Draw the Line Against Malaria’ youth focused campaign.
