Misplaced Modifiers –

What is a Modifier?

As Wikipedia explains,

In grammar, a modifier is an optional element in phrase structure or clause structure. A modifier is so called because it is said to modify (change the meaning of) another element in the structure, on which it is dependent. Typically the modifier can be removed without affecting the grammar of the sentence. For example, in the English sentence This is a red ball, the adjective red is a modifier, modifying the noun ball. Removal of the modifier would leave This is a ball, which is grammatically correct and equivalent in structure to the original sentence.

Example:

Incorrect: At 5 years old, my mother gave me a lego set for Diwali.

Correct: When I was 5 years old, my mother gave me a lego set for Diwali.

Pronoun Errors –

A pronoun is a word used in place of a noun or a noun phrase.

Types of Pronoun Errors:

Lack of agreement between the pronoun and antecedent. (Eg: A good student knows how to study for their exams.)
Inappropriate shifts in person. (Ex: When one feels sad, you feel like you’ve got a weight on your shoulders)
Incorrect pronoun form. Always determine whether the pronoun is being used as a subject, or an object, or a possessive in the sentence, and select the pronoun form to match.
Example: Rahul’s aggressive mentality led to a conflict between he and Rohit.

Correct should be: Rahul’s aggressive mentality led to a conflict between him and Rohit.
