12th July: West Bengal government observed Save Water Day

  • On 12th July, West Bengal government observed Save Water Day.
  • The day was observed to raise awareness on conservation on water.
  • The State government had dug nearly 1.5 lakh ponds in five years till 2016 in the state under the water conservation programme of ‘Jal dharo Jal bharo’.

Fourth anniversary of Skill India Mission being observed on 15TH July and 15th July is celebrated as World Youth Skill Day

  • The fourth anniversary of the Skill India Mission is being observed on 15th July
  • The main function will be held in New Delhi where Home Minister Amit Shah delivered the keynote.
  • Skill India Mission was launched on this day in 2015.
  • Skill India Mission is also known as Skill India Mission.
  • Short video platform Tik Tok announced on Monday that it has partnered with National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) to support skill development in India.
  • On 15th July United Nations is celebrated as World Skill Development Corporation.
  • World Youth Skills Day is marked to promote youth skills development and abilities.

West bengal Governor releases Bengali version of Great Minds of India

  • West Bengal Governor Kesri Nath Tripthi released the Bengali version of the famous book “Great Minds of India”
  • This unique book is translated into Bengali by Dr. R N Das.
  • It is edited by Prof. Nirmal Maity of Kolkata which is originally prefaced by a NASA Chief Scientist, Dr. Kamlesh Lulla of Houston, USA.
  • The book first published in the Xerox format in 1998.

IFFI’s Golden Jubilee Edition to be held from Nov 20 till 28 in Goa

  • The Golden Jubilee Edition of International Film Festival of India, IFFI will be held from 20th Nov till 28th November 2019 in Panaji, Goa.
  • Students from FTII and Satyajit Ray Institute of India and students from some other film institutes will be a part of it to gain some hands on experience.
  • President of Oscar Academy John Bailey and other eminent cinematographers and producers have been invited for the event.

BANKING & FINANCE

SBI to waive off the charges on NEFT, RTGS and IMPS

  • State Bank of India (SBI) has waived the charges on National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) and Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) transactions through YONO, Internet, and mobile banking.
  • This will be effective from July 1.
  • Before July 1, SBI used to charge between Rs.1 and Rs.5 for transactions through NEFT, and Rs.5 to 50 for RTGS transactions.

AIIB to provide $100 million loan to L&T Infrastructure Finance

  • The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has provided a $100-million loan to L&T Infrastructure Finance Company Limited (LTIF).
  • The amount is approved by AIIB for wind and solar infrastructure projects in India.
  • This is the first time AIIB is extending a loan to a non-banking finance company.
  • According to AIIB, investment in renewable energy is an efficient way for India to reduce its carbon intensity while meeting its growing energy needs.
  • India has set a target to install 175 Gigawatt (GW) of renewable energy capacity by 2022 out of which a total of 80.04 GW of renewable energy capacity has been installed in the country till May 2019.

Cancer expert Raghu Ram receives FRCS of Thailand

  • Well-known breast surgeon and Padma Shri awardee P Raghu Ram has been conferred the Honorary Fellowship of The Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) of Thailand at the 44th annual congress of the Royal College in Pattaya.
  • Dr Raghu Ram is director of KIMS-Ushalakshmi Centre for Breast Diseases, and the President of the Association of Surgeons of India.

  • Acharya Devvrat is replacing Governor of Gujarat O.P. Kohli, who retires on Monday.

  • The former Indian wicketkeeper-batsman, Kiran More has been named as the interim coach of the USA cricket team.
  • He will take over from the former coach Pubudu Dassanayake after the 49-year-old announced his resignation due to differences with USA Cricket.

  • Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has called off for today the launch of India’s second mission to Moon – Chandrayaan-2 onboard GSLV MkIII-M1 due to a technical snag.

Vinesh Phogat wins gold at Yasar Dogu International

  • India wrestler Vinesh Phogat has won gold in the 53kg category at Yasar Dogu International in Istanbul.
  • Phogat beat her Russian opponent Ekaterina Poleshchuk 9-5 in the final match to bag the gold medal.
  • It was third gold in the women’s competition for India after Seema (50kg) and Manju (59kg) triumphed in their respective categories.
