  3. President Pranab Mukherjee, onboard
    the presidential yacht INS Sumitra, inspected the fleet of 71
    Indian naval ships at the International
    Fleet Review 2016
    .
  4. The Union Ministry of Agriculture
    and Farmers Welfare on 5 February 2016 decided
    to set up the National Organic Farming Research Institute in Sikkim
    .
  5. Padma Shri awardee Renana Jhabvala, an Ahmedabad-based social
    worker has been invited to serve as a
    panelist on a UN panel on women’s economic empowerment
    .
  6. Eminent cartoonist Sudhir Tailang, who chronicled
    contemporary Indian politics with wit and humour, died.
  7. NASA Astronaut Edgar Mitchell, who was the sixth man to walk on the Moon, died on 4 February 2016 in West
    Palm Beach, Florida. The lunar module pilot on Apollo 14 died at the age of 85.

Labour Ministry signed agreements with organizations engaged in
employment & career activities

  • Union Labour Ministry on 5
    February 2016 signed agreements with leading organizations engaged in
    employment and career related activities. The agreements were signed to exploit
    the potential of the National Career Service (NCS) project.
  • The MoUs signed with Uber, Quikr,
    Monster, Tech Mahindra, Babajobs, India Staffing Federation, Buzzmatic Ventures
    and GoldFish will help in widening the scope and scale of the project.
  • This partnership will also
    provide transparent and credible platform and save both employers and job
    seekers from possible fraudulent practices.

Mahindra AMC received SEBI nod for Mutual Fund business

  • Mahindra Asset Management Company
    (AMC) on 4 February 2016 received Securities and Exchange Board of India’s
    (SEBI’s) approval to manage the Mahindra Mutual Fund.
  • Mahindra AMC is a wholly-owned
    subsidiary of Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services (MMFS), a part of the
    Anand Mahindra-led Mahindra group.
  • According to reports, Mahindra
    Finance applied for a mutual fund licence on 30 December 2008 and was given an
    in-principle approval on 4 October 2011. 

India –
Pranab Mukherjee reviews Indian naval fleet at IFR 2016

  • India’s naval might was on full
    display off the coast of Visakhapatnam on Saturday as President Pranab Mukherjee
    reviewed the naval fleet.
  • A fleet review is a ceremonial
    inspection of naval warships by the supreme commander of the armed forces, the
    President of India.
  • President Pranab Mukherjee, onboard
    the presidential yacht INS Sumitra, inspected the fleet of 71 Indian naval ships.
  • Also on the yacht were Prime
    Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and three other
    service chiefs.
  • The fleet review has 71 of Indian
    Navy’s ships lined up, including both aircraft carriers, INS Vikramaditya and
    INS Virat. However, INS Virat will be retiring soon.
  • Around 50 navies and 24 foreign
    ships are participating in the International Fleet Review, the second to be
    held by India and the largest military exercise hosted by the country so far.
  • The last IFR was held in Mumbai
    in 2001 which was presided by the late APJ Abdul Kalam. Twenty-nine countries
    had participated in the event.

Union Government to set up National Organic Farming Research Institute
in Sikkim

  • The Union Ministry of Agriculture
    and Farmers Welfare on 5 February 2016 decided to set up the National Organic
    Farming Research Institute in Sikkim.
  • The decision to this effect was
    taken by the Union Agriculture Minister Radhamohan Singh and Sikkim Agriculture
    Minister Som Nath Paudyal in New Delhi.
  • The institute will be established
    by upgrading the existing Regional Centre of the Indian Council of Agricultural
    Research (ICAR) in Gangtok.
  • The setting up of the institute
    is of primary importance for Sikkim as it was declared as the first organic
    farming State in the country in January 2016 by the Prime Minister Narendra
    Modi.

Indian Social Worker Renana Jhabvala to be on UN Panel on Women’s
Economic Empowerment

  • Padma Shri awardee Renana Jhabvala,
    an Ahmedabad-based social worker has been invited to serve as a panelist on a
    UN panel on women’s economic empowerment.
  • The United Nations has
    established the panel to provide recommendations on improving economic outcomes
    for women and promoting women’s leadership in driving sustainable, inclusive
    and environmentally-sensitive economic growth in the context of the 2030 Agenda
    for Sustainable Development.
  • Daughter of Booker-prize winning
    novelist and screen-writer, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, and well-known architect
    Cyrus S H Jhabvala, Renana has been active for decades in organising women into
    organisations and trade unions in India and is extensively involved in policy
    issues relating to poor women and the informal economy.
  • Renana, a Harvard graduate, is
    the Nation Coordinator of the Self-Employed Women’s Association of India
    (SEWA), trade union for poor, self-employed women workers in India founded by
    noted Gandhian and civil rights leader Ela Bhatt.

Obituaries –
Cartoonist Sudhir Tailang Dead at 56

  • Eminent cartoonist Sudhir
    Tailang, who chronicled contemporary Indian politics with wit and humour, died
    here today after battling brain cancer for over two years.
  • The cartoonist, who had worked in
    a number of newspapers including Hindustan Times, The Indian Express and Times
    of India, was admitted to Medanta Medicity hospital in Gurgaon in December but
    was brought home around a month ago.
  • Tailang was awarded Padma Shri in
    2004. As a cartoonist, many politicians including Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi,
    Atal Behari Vajpayee, P V Narasimha Rao, Manmohan Singh and Narendra Modi bore
    the brunt of his brush.
  • In 2009, he had come out with a
    book of cartoons titled “No, Prime Minister”, which carried cartoons
    on Manmohan Singh drawn during first stint of his prime ministership.

NASA Astronaut Edgar Mitchell died

  • NASA Astronaut Edgar Mitchell,
    who was the sixth man to walk on the Moon, died on 4 February 2016 in West Palm
    Beach, Florida. The lunar module pilot on Apollo 14 died at the age of 85.
  • His death occurred on the eve of
    the 45th anniversary of his lunar landing, which took place on 5 February 1971.
  • Mitchell, Alan Shepard and Stuart
    Roosa were the crew of Apollo 14 mission, which launched on the lunar surface
    on 5 February 1971. As part of the Apollo 14 mission, he spent more than nine
    hours on the Moon’s surface collecting rocks, taking measurements and other
    things. Mitchell helped collect 94 pounds of lunar rock and soil samples that
    were distributed across 187 scientific teams in the United States and 14 other
    countries for analysis.
