(KRX) in Seoul to extend
their co-operation by listing S&P BSE Sensex-based derivatives contracts. - National Bank for Agriculture and
Rural Development (NABARD) in April 2016 entered into collaboration
with German
government for a special programme on ‘Soil Protection and Rehabilitation for
Food Security’. - Union Minister for State (IC) for
Power, Coal and Renewable Energy Piyush Goyal on 30 April 2016 launched National LED programme – Unnat Jyoti by
Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA) in Madhya Pradesh. He launched the programme along with the
state CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan at a function in Bhopal. - Indian Navy on 28 April 2016 decommissioned Indian
Naval Ships (INS) Veer and Nipat at a ceremony in the Naval Dockyard, Mumbai. They both are of
VEER class corvettes. - Tabassum Adnan, a women’s rights
activist from Swat valley of Pakistan, on 28 April 2016 won the prestigious
Mandela – Graça Machel Innovation Award 2016 in Bogota, Colombia. - The International Jazz Day 2016 was observed across the world on 30 April 2016.
This year, UNESCO celebrated the day at Washington, DC.

SIDBI signs MoU with Saarc Development Fund
- Small Industries Development Bank
of India (SIDBI) and Saarc Development Fund (SDF) has entered into a Memorandum
of Understanding (MOU) for mutual cooperation and collaboration. - The MoU envisages SDF and SIDBI
to work together in co-funding of projects in Indian MSMEs on risk sharing
basis in identified sectors, development of suitable financial products for SME
financing for MSMEs of other Saarc states, the Finance Ministry said in a
statement. - The MoU also calls for technology
transfer and making available software to MFIs regarding loan tracking systems
in other Saarc states and capacity development of SDF/SIDBI and SME funding
institutions in SAARC countries, it added. - The MoU also calls for technology

Mahindra Intertrade signs MoU with MSTC to set up India’s first auto
shredding facility

- Mahindra Intertrade has signed a
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MSTC Ltd for a joint initiative to set
up India’s first auto shredding facility. - The proposed facility will be
equipped with state-of-the-art, fully automated end-of-life vehicle recycling
equipment and will be India’s first such facility. - This is expected to facilitate
recycling of scrapped automobiles. - So far, auto-shredding in India
has been largely an unorganized activity with vehicles long past their usable
life still in use, especially in rural and semi-urban India.
BSE inks MoU with Korea Exchange, lists derivatives contracts
- The BSE has entered into a
memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Korea Exchange (KRX) in Seoul to
extend their co-operation by listing S&P BSE Sensex-based derivatives
contracts. - The agreement will further the
development of derivatives markets in India and South Korea. It will encourage
the sharing of information, and foster new opportunities for the exchanges and
their respective issuers. - The MoU also includes
information-sharing by both parties to promote each other’s understanding of
the products’ listing process and the functioning of the markets . - BSE and KRX will support each
other for investor-relation activities of cross-listed products and assist with
cross-border supervision and enforcement. - They will conduct joint research
in the area of derivatives markets and support the development of new products,
among others.
NABARD partners Germany for food security initiative
- National Bank for Agriculture and
Rural Development (NABARD) in April 2016 entered into collaboration with German
government for a special programme on ‘Soil Protection and Rehabilitation for
Food Security’. - The programme is part of the
German government’s recently introduced special initiative ‘One World, No
Hunger’ initiative. India is the only country in Asia chosen for this
initiative. - As part of the collaboration,
NABARD is anchoring two major programmes — soil conservation and rehabilitation
of degraded land programme in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. It is also
conducting innovation of watershed development and climate change adaptation
programmes in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan. - Germany’s ‘One World, No Hunger’
addresses areas such as food and nutrition security, promotion of innovation,
protection and sustainable use of natural resources in rural areas and
promotion of responsible land use and access to land.

Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal launched UJALA Scheme in Madhya

- Union Minister for State (IC) for
Power, Coal and Renewable Energy Piyush Goyal on 30 April 2016 launched
National LED programme – Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA) in
Madhya Pradesh. He launched the programme
along with the state CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan at a function in Bhopal. - The scheme is being implemented
by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a joint venture of PSUs under the
Union Ministry of Power.
Special features of UJALA
- Under this Programme, 3 crore LED
Bulbs will be distributed in the next 6 months in the State. People of Madhya
Pradesh will get energy efficient 9W LED bulbs at an upfront payment of just 85
rupees per LED bulb. - UJALA will not only help reduce
consumers their electricity bills but also contribute to the energy security of
India. The UJALA scheme is being monitored in a transparent manner through a
national dashboard (www.delp.in).
Indian Navy decommissioned INS Veer and INS Nipat
- Indian Navy on 28 April 2016
decommissioned Indian Naval Ships (INS) Veer and Nipat at a ceremony in the
Naval Dockyard, Mumbai. They both are of VEER class corvettes. - The ceremony involved the
lowering of the ensign and commissioning pennents with playing of last post. It
was held in the presence of Vice Admiral Sunil Lanba, Flag Officer
Commanding-in-Chief Western Naval Command. - INS Veer was commissioned into
Indian Navy on 26 March 1987 with the pennent number K 40 while, INS Nipat was
brought into Navy on 5 December 1988 with pennent number K 42.

Swat activist Tabassum Adnan won 2016 Nelson Mandela Award
- Tabassum Adnan, a women’s rights
activist from Swat valley of Pakistan, on 28 April 2016 won the prestigious
Mandela – Graça Machel Innovation Award 2016 in Bogota, Colombia. - She won the award for the
individual activist category on the concluding day of the International Civil
Society Week held from 25 April to 28 April 2016. - A victim of child marriage,
Tabassum Adnan was married at the age of 13. The marriage which was marked by
frequent domestic abuse, ended after 20 years when she gathered the courage to
divorce her abusive husband. - She is the founder of Khwendo
Jirga (Sister’s Council), the first women-only jirga in Pakistan. The council
meets weekly to address issues of women’s right, including honour killings, and
acid attacks.

International Jazz Day 2016 observed globally
- The International Jazz Day 2016
was observed across the world on 30 April 2016. This year, UNESCO celebrated
the day at Washington, DC. - The Day is intended to raise
awareness in the international community of the virtues of jazz as an
educational tool, and a force for peace, unity, dialogue and enhanced
cooperation among people. - Many governments, civil society
organizations, educational institutions, and private citizens currently engaged
in the promotion of jazz music celebrate the day to foster greater appreciation
not only for the music but also for the contribution it can make to building
more inclusive societies.
