Renault India
announce Ranbir Kapoor as its Brand Ambassador

  • Renault India that completed its fourth year this month, on
    Monday, announced Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor as its brand ambassador.
  • The company says that this association will leverage the
    versatility and legacy of both Renault and Ranbir Kapoor, as he represents the
    underlying brand promise of Renault: ‘Passion For Life’.
  • The partnership with Ranbir Kapoor is timed with Renault’s
    next phase of growth in India, as the French car-maker is looking to
    significantly increase its pan-India presence. And besides launching several
    new products, the company has plans to launch expand its dealership network and
    reach 280 sales and service outlets by the end of the next year.

Swati Maliwal took
charge as Chairperson of Delhi Commisson for Women

  • Swati Maliwal on 28 July 2015 took charge as the Chairperson
    of Delhi Commisson for Women (DCW), along with three other members. Her
    appointment was approved by Lt Governor Najeeb Jung. Maliwal, an RTI activist,
    succeeded Barkha Singh.
  • Maliwal had taken charge as the DCW’s Chief on 20 July 2015
    itself, but her appointment was struck down by the Lt Governor Najeeb Jung at
    that time.
  • Maliwal is the wife of Aam Aadmi Party leader Navin Jaihind
    and has been an advisor to Kejriwal on public grievances and handles his Janta
    Samwad. She has been associated with him since India Against Corruption (IAC)
    days.

Ashish Bahuguna
appointed as Chairman of food safety regulator FSSAI
  • Ashish Bahuguna was in the fourth week of July 2015
    appointed as the Chairman of food safety regulator Food Safety and Standards
    Authority of India (FSSAI).
  • His tenure will be of three years and he succeeded K
    Chandramouli whose tenure ended in January 2015. Since then the position was
    lying vacant and the Health Secretary Bhanu Pratap Sharma was given the interim
    charge of chairman of FSSAI.
  • Bahuguna is a 1978-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS)
    officer of Rajasthan cadre who retired from the post of Secretary, Ministry of
    Agriculture in February 2015.

India
Kerala to become
first digital State
  • The State government is moving ahead with plans to declare
    the State as the first digital one in the country, State Minister for IT and
    Industries PK Kunhalikutty said.
  • Speaking at a function to launch the logo of Technopark,
    which is celebrating its silver jubilee, Kunhalikutty said on Monday that
    preparations were on to declare the State as digital State, if possible on
    August 15. Proposal with all necessary parameters would be presented in the Cabinet
    for approval, he added.
  • Chief Minister Oommen Chandy launched the logo at the
    function and inaugurated the one-month-long silver jubilee celebrations.
  • Technopark, launched in 1990, is spread over nearly 760
    acres with eight million sq feet of built-up space, through its 340-plus
    companies provide direct employment to 47,100 IT professionals. The State
    government gains over ₹100
    crore by way of tax annually, it was stated.

Bangladesh part of
Sundarbans witnessed rapid decline in tiger population between 2004 and 2015

  • Bangladesh part of Sundarbans forest witnessed a rapid
    decline in the tiger population between 2004 and 2015. This was revealed by the
    Tiger Census 2015 in the fourth week of July 2015.
  • As per the Tiger Census 2015, the number of tigers in
    Bangladesh part of the Sundarbans declined sharply from 440 in 2004 to 106 in
    2015. Sunderbans in Bangladesh are spread over 6097 sq.km and are the only natural
    habitat of the country.
  • The fall was attributed to loss of habitat, unchecked
    wildlife poaching, lack of proper forest management and animal-human conflict
    in the forest.
  • The methodology used to conduct the Census 2015 was use of
    hidden cameras to count tigers as compared to earlier methodology of counting
    pug marks. This means the number this time are more accurate than past.
  • The Tiger Census 2015 was conducted by Bangladesh-India
    Joint Tiger Census Project and was carried out under Strengthening Regional
    Cooperation for Wildlife Protection in Asia Project with funding from the World
    Bank.

Nepal’s political
parties agreed to remove word ‘Secularism’ from the Constitution
  • Nepal’s political parties on 27 July 2015 agreed to remove
    the word “secularism” from the yet-to-be framed Constitution. They agreed to
    this during a discussion on peoples’ view vis-à-vis the new constitution in the
    Constituent Assembly.
  • The political parties reached the consensus on this after a
    majority of people in their feedback to the new constitution demanded for
    replacing the word “secularism” by either “Hindu” or “religious freedom.” Over
    80 per cent of Nepal’s population is Hindu.
  • Nepal was declared a secular country in 2007 after Nepal’s
    Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist joined mainstream politics after a
    decade-long insurgency that killed over 13000 people. The decision had ended
    Nepal’s century-old identity as the world’s only Hindu kingdom.

Mexico defeated
Jamaica to win CONCACAF Gold Cup Football tournament
  • Mexico on 26 July 2015 defeated Jamaica 3-1 in the final of
    CONCACAF Gold Cup football tournament to win the regional tournament for the
    record seventh time. The final was played at Philadelphia, US.
  • From the EL Tri side (nickname of Mexican football team),
    the goals were scored by Captain and midfielder Andred Guardado, forward Jesus
    Corona and forward Oribe Peralta, while Darren Mattocks scored the lone goal
    for Jamaica in the 78th minute.
  • In the semi-finals, Mexico had defeated Panama while
    Jamaica, the first Caribbean nation to reach the Gold Cup’s final, defeated the
    United States to reach the final of the Gold Cup.
  • The third place was taken by Panama whereas the US, the host
    and the winner of 2013 Gold Cup, finished a dismal fourth in the tournament.

Raina signs up with
Sports Management Group ‘IOS’ for 3 years
  • Indian middle-order batsman Suresh Raina has signed a three
    year deal with leading sports management group, IOS Sports & Entertainment.
  • IOS will now manage Raina’s endorsements and brand
    associations, corporate profile, patents and digital rights, images, visibility
    on social networking sites and merchandise.
  • Raina is the first cricketer IOS has signed. IOS manages
    some elite sportspersons such as Olympic medalists Vijender Singh, boxer MC
    Mary Kom, and wrestler Sushil Kumar.

Former South African
Skipper Clive Rice Dies
  • Former all-rounder Clive Rice, the first post-apartheid
    captain of South Africa, died today aged 66, an official from the national
    cricket association said.
  • He was selected for a 1971-72 tour of Australia, which was
    cancelled because of opposition to the South African government’s policy of
    apartheid.
  • When South Africa returned to the international fold in
    November 1991, Rice was appointed captain of a team which played three one-day internationals
    (ODIs) in India.
  • But he was controversially omitted from the South Africa
    team which played in the 1992 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand with the
    selectors placing an emphasis on youth..

Noted Physicist P
Hariharan passed away
  • Eminent physicist P Hariharan died on 26 July 2015 in
    Berkeley, California. He was 89. He is survived by a son and a daughter.
  • Hariharan had contributed in various researches including in
    the design of a new 3-beam interferometer, first practical radial-shear
    interferometer and double passed Fabry-Perot interferometer.
  • He was the first physicist to apply digital phase-shifting
    techniques to holographic interferometry in order to measure strains and vector
    displacements. He had also developed multicolour rainbow holograms and
    improvised multicolour reflection holograms.
