2016 launched Sahapedia.org,
India’s
first online interactive portal on the cultural heritage of the country.
Sahapedia
is a collection of resources on the diverse heritage of India. It is non-profit
society, led by former TCS chairman S. Ramadorai, who is the head of the
National Skill Development Agency. - The 11th Indo-Mongolia joint
training Exercise, titled ‘Nomadic Elephant – 2016’ commenced on 25 April 2016 in Mongolia. The
exercise aims at promoting military associations between India and Mongolia
will culminate on 8 May 2016. - Government of Madhya Pradesh,
Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Sun Pharma on 25 April
2016 entered
into an agreement for research and innovation in preventive health. - Indian Missile Corvette, INS Karmuk along with a Dornier Maritime Patrol Aircraft participated
in the 22nd Indo-Thai Coordinated Patrol (CORPAT) on 25 April 2016 in the
Andaman Sea. - The Judo Federation of India (JFI) on 25 April 2016 announced that India
has been allotted the Commonwealth Judo Championships 2018. - Riyad Mahrez on 24 April 2016 became the first African
footballer to win the Professional Footballers Association’s (PFA) Player of
the Year award for the 2015–16 season. The footballer received the
award at the Professional Footballers’ Association awards ceremony organised in
London. - Union Sports Ministry on 25 April
2016 announced
to provide one lakh rupees per month as out of pocket allowance to the
sports persons under the Target Olympic Podium (TOP) scheme. - Professional football club Mohun
Bagan and India striker Jeje Lalpekhlua on
25 April 2016 won the Football Players’ Association of India
(FPAI) Indian Player of the Year award at its annual awards function
held in Mumbai. - Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) on 25 April 2016 got
green nod for its 694-crore rupees project at Haldia Dock Complex in West
Bengal. This is the project of developing LPG import terminal as well
as storage, bottling and bulk distribution facilities. - Government appointed Environment Secretary Ashok
Lavasa as Expenditure Secretary due
to the retirement of Finance Secretary Ratan Watal. - The
World Intellectual Property Day 2016 was on 26 April 2016 observed across the world with the theme Digital
Creativity: Culture Reimagined.

- The Union Government on 23 April
2016 launched Sahapedia.org, India’s first online interactive portal on the
cultural heritage of the country. - Sahapedia is a collection of
resources on the diverse heritage of India. It is non-profit society, led by
former TCS chairman S. Ramadorai, who is the head of the National Skill
Development Agency. - The online portal aims at
educating the people of India about its various traditions, visual arts,
performing arts, literature and languages. The portal is accessible to all and
is a strong initiative towards the digitisation and research on the traditional
art forms of India and their importance in the modern era.
Indo-Mongolia Joint Military Exercise, Nomadic Elephant – 2016,

- The 11th Indo-Mongolia joint
training Exercise, titled ‘Nomadic Elephant – 2016’ commenced on 25 April 2016
in Mongolia. The exercise aims at promoting military associations between India
and Mongolia will culminate on 8 May 2016. - The aim of this exercise is to
develop synergy and inter operability between the two armies to fight in
Counter Insurgency and Counter Terrorism environment under the United Nation
mandate.
Key highlights of Nomadic Elephant – 2016 Exercise
- A platoon of the Kumaon Regiment
of the Indian Army along with a team of two observers will be taking part in
the event. - From the Mongolian Armed Forces,
a total of 60 personnel will take part in the exercise.
Madhya Pradesh, ICMR and Sun Pharma joined hands for research in
preventive health

- Government of Madhya Pradesh,
Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Sun Pharma on 25 April 2016
entered into an agreement for research and innovation in preventive health. - This agreement for Malaria Free
India and other innovation in preventive health was announced by Union Health
Minister JP Nadda in New Delhi at a function on the occasion of World Malaria
Day.
Key highlights of the collaboration
- A malaria elimination
demonstration project titled Malaria Free India will be established to support
the national framework for elimination of malaria in India. - The demonstration project will be
launched in one of the most malaria endemic districts of Madhya Pradesh and
implemented in a phased manner, beginning with Mandla district of Madhya
Pradesh before December 2016.
INS Karmuk Corvette participated in Indo-Thai Coordinated Patrol
(CORPAT)

- Indian Missile Corvette, INS
Karmuk along with a Dornier Maritime Patrol Aircraft participated in the 22nd
Indo-Thai Coordinated Patrol (CORPAT) on 25 April 2016 in the Andaman Sea. - India’s indigenously built
Missile Corvette is based at the Andaman and Nicobar Command.

India to host 2018 Commonwealth Judo Championships
- The Judo Federation of India
(JFI) on 25 April 2016 announced that India has been allotted the Commonwealth
Judo Championships 2018. - The Commonwealth Judo
Championships was allotted to India, by the Commonwealth Judo Congress held on
23 April 2016 at Port Elizabeth, South Africa. - This will be the first time that
Commonwealth Judo Championships will be held in India. The Championships will
be held in Jaipur. However, the dates are yet to be finalized.
Riyad Mahrez became first African footballer to win PFA Player of the
Year

- Riyad Mahrez on 24 April 2016
became the first African footballer to win the Professional Footballers
Association’s (PFA) Player of the Year award for the 2015–16 season. The
footballer received the award at the Professional Footballers’ Association
awards ceremony organised in London. - With the award, Mahrez also
became the second non-European, after Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez, to grab
the award. - On the other hand, Tottenham
Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli was named Young Player of the Year.
Union Government to provide 1 lakh Rupees per month to Rio-bound

- Union Sports Ministry on 25 April
2016 announced to provide one lakh rupees per month as out of pocket allowance
to the sports persons under the Target Olympic Podium (TOP) scheme. - This allowance will help the
sports persons in their preparation for the Olympics and Paralympics Games at
Rio de Janeiro, which is set to start in August 2016. - 77 Indian athletes in eight
disciplines have qualified for the Olympics till date and many more are likely
to qualify in the next two months. - Target Olympic Podium scheme is a
sports ministry initiative under which Olympic medal prospects are funded by
the government for top class training as part of their preparations for the
Games.
Jeje Lalpekhlua named FPAI Player of the Year
- Professional football club Mohun
Bagan and India striker Jeje Lalpekhlua on 25 April 2016 won the Football
Players’ Association of India (FPAI) Indian Player of the Year award at its
annual awards function held in Mumbai. - Lalpekhlua received the highest
number of votes from fellow professional footballers to finish on top in the
shortlist which included India captain Sunil Chhetri, Bikash Jairu, David
Lalrinmuana and Dhanachandra Singh. - Nigerian striker Ranti Martins,
who played for East Bengal in the I-League, was named the Foreign Player of the
Year. - The Manipur-born Udanta Singh of
I-League champion Bengaluru FC bagged the Young Player of the Year award.
Bengaluru FC’s coach Ashley Westwood won the Coach of the Year award. - Debjit Majumder was named the Fans’
Player of the Year.

BPCL got environmental clearance for 694 crore rupees LPG project in
West Bengal

- Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd
(BPCL) on 25 April 2016 got green nod for its 694-crore rupees project at
Haldia Dock Complex in West Bengal. This is the project of developing LPG
import terminal as well as storage, bottling and bulk distribution facilities. - The proposed project aims to
boost supply and help achieve the government’s target of making LPG available
to each household by 2018. - The domestic production of LPG is
around 12.38 million metric tonne per annum (mmtpa) which is much lower than
the estimated demand of 18.65 mmtpa in 2016.
Appointments –
Ashok Lavasa to be next expenditure secretary
- The government initiated a major
senior bureaucratic reshuffle when it announced 13 new appointments on Tuesday,
including that of Environment Secretary Ashok Lavasa as Expenditure Secretary
due to the retirement of Finance Secretary Ratan Watal. - Lavasa, a 1980 batch IAS officer
from the Haryana cadre, will take over the expenditure department from Watal, a
1978 batch Andhra Pradesh cadre officer, who retires on Saturday. Lavasa will
be replaced at environment by Ajay Narayan Jha, a 1982 batch Manipur cadre
officer, currently special secretary in the expenditure department. - Watal has been expenditure
secretary since December 2013 and became finance secretary in August last year.
He was due to retire on February 29 but as the government was in the middle of
the budget-making process for 2016-17, his tenure was extended by two months.

- The World Intellectual Property
Day 2016 was on 26 April 2016 observed across the world with the theme Digital
Creativity: Culture Reimagined. - On this day, the World
Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) works together with various
government agencies, non-government organizations, community groups and
individuals to hold different events and activities to promote World
Intellectual Property Day. - The day is celebrated to spread
awareness about the role that intellectual property rights (patents,
trademarks, industrial designs, copyright) play in encouraging innovation and
creativity.

Saudi Arabia unveiled Vision 2030 cutting reliance on oil
- The Cabinet of Saudi Arabia
kingdom on 25 April 2016 approved the Vision 2030, a broad-based economic
reform plan. The Vision charts out the roadmap for diversifying the Saudi
economy in next 14 years and to ensure that Saudi Arabia can live without oil
by 2020. - Vision 2030 envisages forming
public investment fund, boosting affordable housing and giving expats long-term
residence among others.

Thailand former Prime Minister Banharn Silpa-archa died
- The former prime minister of
Thailand, Banharn Silpa-archa was died on 23 April 2016 in Bangkok. He was 83. - His scandal-ridden tenure a Prime
Minister preceded the Thailand’s economic collapse in the 1990s.
