Reliance Jio Money for one-click
payment service. Reliance Jio money is a wallet application that will be
launched soon for mobile devices where Federal bank will enable a direct payment
option for its customers. - The Union Cabinet on 20 July 2016
approved a proposal to introduce amendments to the Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Amendment
Bill, 2015 in Parliament. - The Cabinet Committee on Economic
Affairs (CCEA) on 20 July 2016 gave its approval for installation of Ghatampur Thermal Power
Project (GTPS) of 1980 MW capacity through a Joint Venture Company. The
project will be implemented at an estimated cost of 17237.8 crore rupees. - The Union Cabinet chaired by the
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 20 July 2016 approved the incorporation of Sagarmala
Development Company (SDC) under the Companies Act, 2013. It will be
under the administrative control of the Ministry of Shipping. - The Cabinet Committee on Economic
Affairs (CCEA) on 20 July 2016 approved construction of a new dry dock within Cochin Shipyard Limited
(CSL). The dock at CSL will be developed at an estimated cost of
1799 crore rupees. - The Union Cabinet on 20 July 2016
gave its approval for establishment of new All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at
Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh. - Central Government on Thursday
promoted director general and mission director of Unique Identification Authority of India
(UIDAI) Ajay Bhushan Pandey as its chief executive officer (CEO). - Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip
Erdogan on 20 July 2016 declared a three-month state of emergency in
the country. The emergency was declared in response to the failed coup
that happened on 15 July 2016.

Federal Bank ties up with Reliance Jio Money
- Federal Bank has signed an
agreement with Reliance Jio Money for one-click payment service. Reliance Jio
money is a wallet application that will be launched soon for mobile devices
where Federal bank will enable a direct payment option for its customers. - Through this service the bank’s
customers can complete a transaction without funding the wallet. - Bank’s customers will get a
facility to directly pay from their account for the services offered through
the wallet (without pre-loading their wallet). - This arrangement will help
customers retain cash in their account and use it only when a transaction is
made unlike other instances where a wallet will require the user to maintain
balance exclusively in the wallet.
Union Cabinet approves amendment in the Benami Transactions Prohibition

- The Union Cabinet on 20 July 2016
approved a proposal to introduce amendments to the Benami Transactions
(Prohibition) Amendment Bill, 2015 in Parliament. - The amendments aim to strengthen
the Bill in terms of legal and administrative procedure so as to overcome the
practical difficulties which may arise in the implementation of the provisions
of the Bill when it becomes an Act. - The legislation is intended to
effectively prohibit benami transactions and consequently prevent circumvention
of law through unfair practices.
CCEA approves Ghatampur Thermal Power Project in Uttar Pradesh
- The Cabinet Committee on Economic
Affairs (CCEA) on 20 July 2016 gave its approval for installation of Ghatampur
Thermal Power Project (GTPS) of 1980 MW capacity through a Joint Venture
Company. - The Joint Venture Company is
named as Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Limited (NUPPL). The company is formed
jointly by Neyveli Lignite Corporation Limited (NLC) and Uttar Pradesh Rajya
Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL).
Key highlights of the project
- The project will be implemented
at an estimated cost of 17237.8 crore rupees. - The estimated cost includes
Interest During Construction component of 3202.42 crore rupees. - The commissioning of Unit I, II
and III will be 52 months, 58 months and 64 months respectively from starting
date.
Union Cabinet approves incorporation of Sagarmala Development Company
- The Union Cabinet chaired by the
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 20 July 2016 approved the incorporation of
Sagarmala Development Company (SDC) under the Companies Act, 2013. It will be
under the administrative control of the Ministry of Shipping. - SDC will be developed with an
initial Authorized Share Capital of 1000 Crore rupees and a Subscribed Share
Capital of 90 Crore rupees. It will provide equity support to the project
Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) and funding support to the residual projects
under the Sagarmala Programme. - Implementation of the identified
projects will be done mainly through private or PPP mode. - It will provide equity support
for the project Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) set up by the
Ports/State/Central Ministries window. - It will implement only those
residual which cannot be funded by any other means / mode.

Affairs (CCEA) on 20 July 2016 approved construction of a new dry dock within
Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL). - The dock at CSL will be developed
at an estimated cost of 1799 crore rupees. - Objective: The project will
augment the shipbuilding/ship repair capacity essentially required for tapping
the market potential of building specialized and technologically advanced large
vessels. - Large vessels include Liquefied
Natural Gas (LNG) vessels, Indigenous Aircraft Carriers of higher capacity,
Jack up Rigs, Drill ships, large Dredgers and repairing of offshore platforms
and larger vessels.

Union Cabinet approves establishment of All India Institutes of Medical
Sciences at Gorakhpur

- The Union Cabinet on 20 July 2016
gave its approval for establishment of new All India Institutes of Medical
Sciences (AIIMS) at Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh. - The institute will be established
under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).
Key highlights of the project
- The cost of the project for
establishment of the new AIIMS in Gorakhpur will be 1011 crore rupees. - The cost estimate does not
include recurring costs (wages, salaries and operation, maintenance and
expenses).

Union Cabinet approves Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill,

- The Union Cabinet on 20 July 2016
approved The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, 2016 to protect
transgenders from discrimination. - Through this Bill, the Government
aims to evolve a mechanism for social, economic and educational empowerment of
the transgenders.
Highlights of the Bill
- The Bill will benefit a large
number of transgender persons, mitigate the stigma, discrimination and abuse
against this marginalized section and bring them into the mainstream of
society. - It will lead to greater
inclusiveness and will make the transgender persons productive members of the
society. - It will make all the stakeholders
responsive and accountable for upholding the principles underlying the Bill.

Govt appoints Ajay Bhushan Pandey UIDAI CEO
- Central Government on Thursday
promoted director general and mission director of Unique Identification
Authority of India (UIDAI) Ajay Bhushan Pandey as its chief executive officer
(CEO). - A doctorate in computer science
from University of Minnesota Minneapolis of the US, Pandey is a Maharashtra
cadre IAS officer of 1984 batch. - He has been involved with the
UIDAI established under the Aadhaar Act and implementation of Aadhaar since
September 2010. - It was during his tenure as the
UIDAI head when Aadhaar allocation crossed 100 crore and a new Aadhaar Bill was
passed.
World –
Turkey declares three-month state of emergency after a failed military
coup

- Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip
Erdogan on 20 July 2016 declared a three-month state of emergency in the
country. The emergency was declared in response to the failed coup that happened
on 15 July 2016. - The decision was made following a
meeting with cabinet ministers and top security advisers in Ankara. - While declaring the imposition of
the emergency Erdogan said that the measure was being taken to counter threats
to Turkish democracy.
Obituaries –
Oldest and last Babri litigant Hashim Ansari passes away
- Mohammad Hashim Ansari, the
oldest litigation in the Ramjanmabhoomi-Babri title suit, died on 20 July 2016
due to heart-related complications in the temple city of Ayodhya. He was 95. - Ansari, born in Ayodhya, was one
of the seven main litigants from Muslim side in the 1949 Babri Masjid case
regarding placing of Lord Rama idols in the premises. He was the lone surviving
litigant of the case. - The other six main litigants were
Mohammad Farooq, Ashhad Rashidi, Maulana Mahfuzurur Rahman, Mufti Hasbullah,
Mahmud and Sunni Central Waqf Board.
