Finance/Banking
Hike in Service Tax
to 14 percent became operational

  • The decision of the Parliament to increase the rate of
    service tax from 12.36 to 14 percent became operational on 1 June 2015.
  • Now, the new rate subsumes the education cess (2 percent on
    the service tax amount) which was earlier levied separately.
  • The decision to increase the rate was taken to facilitate
    smooth transition to the Goods Service Tax (GST) regime which is proposed to be
    implemented from 1 April 2016. Once implemented, GST will subsume service tax,
    excise and other indirect taxes.
  • Earlier, the Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley proposed
    for the hike in his 2015-16 budget speech on 28 February 2015 which was
    subsequently approved by the Lok Sabha in the form of the Finance bill, 2015 on
    30 April 2015 and the President of India on 14 May 2015.

SBI launches `Her
Ghar Her Car’ loyalty scheme

  • After the Her Ghar loan product, country’s largest bank
    State Bank of India launched ‘Her Ghar Her Car’ loyalty scheme offering reduced
    interest on car loans.
  • “Under this scheme, ‘Her Ghar’ borrowers can go in for a
    ‘Her Car’ loan at reduced rates of 10 per cent per annum… Her Ghar Her Car is
    an addition to products available with SBI wherein concession in rates have
    been introduced with the objective of reaching out to women in the country and
    empowering them to take decisions that can change the course of their family
    and society at large,” SBI said in a statement.
  • SBI cut its base rate in April to 9.85 per cent.
  • Car loans to borrowers who have not taken loans under ‘Her
    Ghar’ scheme would continue to be at 10.25 per cent per annum.
  • The original ‘Her Ghar’ scheme provided a concession in
    interest rates for women home loan borrowers.

SBI’s mCASH for money
transfer
  • State Bank of India customers can transfer money to anyone
    without knowing their Bank account details irrespective of whether the
    recipient bank is SBI or not.
  • “Sender needs to have Internet Banking access either through
    browser or State Bank Anywhere app. To transfer the money, sender needs to know
    recipient’s mobile no or email ID, SBI said in a statement.
  • Recipient will receive the intimation of the transfer
    request through SMS/Email and has to either download the State Bank mCASH app
    or visitwww.onlinesbi.com to enter his/her Bank account details, IFSC code and
    Email ID/Mobile to receive the transfer-money.
  • This is one of the series of technology initiatives launched
    by the bank.

Appointments
               
Birender Singh Dhanoa
Appointed New IAF Vice Chief

  • Air Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa, a Kargil war veteran,
    today took over as the Vice Chief of the Indian Air Force.
  • He succeeds Air Marshal Ravi Kant Sharma demitted the office
    yesterday, after 40 years of service in the IAF. Dhanoa was commissioned in the
    IAF in June 1978 as a fighter pilot.
  • He is an alumnus of Rashtriya Indian Military College, the
    National Defence Academy and the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington.
  • Dhanoa is a Qualified Flying Instructor and has flown
    various types of fighter aircraft in his career.
  • During the Kargil operations, he commanded a fighter
    squadron and himself flew numerous night-strike missions in the mountainous terrain,
    an IAF statement said.
  • He has the distinction of having held a number of the
    important operational appointments including Station Commander of a fighter
    base and leader of an Indian Military Training Team abroad.

Mauritius Appoints
Ameenah Gurib-Fakim As Its First Woman President
  • The government of Mauritius today designated Ameenah
    Gurib-Fakim as the Indian Ocean island nation’s new president, making her the
    first woman to hold the ceremonial position.
  • The appointment of Gurib-Fakim, an internationally- renowned
    scientist and biologist, is subject to parliament approval, due to take place
    on Thursday.
  • The opposition has said it will support her appointment, making
    the vote a mere formality.
  • Her inauguration is expected to take place on Friday,
    officials said.
  • Gurib-Fakim, 56, will be the first female president of the
    island, which gained independence from Britain in 1968 and which replaced
    Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state in 1992.
  • Former president Kailash Purryag, who had been put in place
    by the previous government, stepped down as the island’s figurehead on Friday.

Former Singapore
Foreign Minister George Yeo appointed as Chancellor of Nalanda University
  • Former Singapore Foreign Minister George Yeo was appointed
    as the new Chancellor of the Nalanda University, Bihar.
  • Ministry of External Affairs announced his appointed for the
    post on 30 May 2015.
  • Yeo will succeed Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, who withdrew
    his candidature for a second term as Chancellor of the Nalanda University in
    February 2015.
  • Till this announcement, Yeo was on the governing board of
    the University. Earlier on 13 and 14 January 2015, Yeo also chaired the last
    meet of the board, when unanimous decision was made to have Dr. Sen as the
    Chancellor for the second consecutive term.

Amit Jain appointed
as President of Uber Technologies Inc’s India Operations
  • Amit Jain was on 31 May 2015 appointed as the President of
    US-based taxi hailing app Uber’s India operations. In this role, Amit will be
    running all business strategy, operations, and growth in a market of global
    strategic importance for Uber.
  • Prior to this appointment, Jain was president of Rent.com, a
    property portal in the US. Jain is a B. Tech from IIT, Delhi.

Bangladesh to honour
Atal Bihari Vajpayee

  • Bangladesh is set to honour former prime minister Atal
    Bihari Vajpayee for his outstanding support for the country’s independence from
    Pakistan in 1971 when he was a Lok Sabha member.
  • A Foreign Ministry spokesman familiar with the process said
    Bangladesh will hand over Vajpayee’s “Friends of Bangladesh Liberation War
    Award” to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his upcoming visit to the country
    from June 6. Vajpayee, who is unwell, could not visit Bangladesh to receive the
    honour.
  • Besides, the official said, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina
    also approved a proposal to honour the families of the members of Indian armed
    forces for sacrificing their lives for the cause of Bangladesh’s independence.
  • Officials said Dhaka decided to send the martyrs’ family
    members a letter alongside a certificate to be signed by the Bangladesh premier
    expressing tributes for their contributions.
  • The then Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi was the first
    “foreign friend” to be conferred with the ‘Bangladesh Liberation War Honour
    Award’ Her daughter-in-law and Congress party president Sonia Gandhi received
    the honour on her behalf in 2012 at a special ceremony.

Uttarakhand’s Health
Minister SS Negi conferred with World No Tobacco Day Award 2015
  • Uttarakhand’s Medical, Health and Family Welfare Minister
    Surendra Singh Negi on 31 May 2015 was conferred with the World No Tobacco Day
    Award 2015 by the World Health Organsiation (WHO).
  • He was one of the six awardees from the WHO South-East Asia
    Region.

India
Union Government
formed a Committee to oversee 125th Bhim Jayanti celebrations
  • The Union Government on 30 May 2015 formed a committee under
    the Chairpersonship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to oversee the celebrations
    of 125th birth anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar, also called Bhim Jayanti which is
    annually celebrated on 14 April.
  • The Committee was formed to suggest different programmes and
    activities to be undertaken by various Ministries and Departments and States
    and Union Territories (UTs). These activities and celebrations are aimed at
    spreading the thoughts and ideas of Dr BR Ambedkar.
  • Apart from the Prime Minister, the committee consists of
    eleven members of the Union Council of Ministers including Home, Finance,
    External Affairs and Social Justice and Empowerment Ministers and six other
    members representing states and civil society.

Tendulkar, Ganguly,
Laxman inducted in BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee
  • Former cricketers Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS
    Laxman on 1 June 2015 were inducted into the BCCI’s newly-constituted cricket
    advisory committee.
  • The President of the BCCI, Jagmohan Dalmiya nominated the
    trio as esteemed members of the Cricket Advisory Committee of the BCCI, with
    immediate effect. Their inclusion in the panel was announced by BCCI secretary
    Anurag Thakur through a tweet.

Lalit Bhanot Elected
Asian Athletics Association Vice-President
  • Scam-tainted former IOA Secretary General Lalit Bhanot was
    today elected vice-President of the Asian Athletics Association (AAA) in polls
    held in Wuhan, China.
  • Recommended by the Athletics Federation of India, Bhanot
    fought through a 14-strong challenge in the elections to be picked as one of
    the five vice-Presidents during the AAA council on the eve of the Asian
    Championships in Wuhan.
  • Tainted in the corruption scandal that engulfed the 2010
    Commonwealth Games, Bhanot served as secretary of AFI for more than a decade
    and was the Secretary General of the IOA when it served a 14-month suspension
    by the IOC. He is currently the chairman of AFI’s Planning Committee.
