Finance/Industry
WPI-inflation dips
further to (-) 2.36% in May

  • Wholesale price index (WPI)-based inflation remained in the
    negative territory for the seventh straight month in May 2015 at (-) 2.36
    percent, largely due to softening of food articles prices and further
    contraction in prices of manufactured products.
  • The fall in fuel prices—which saw contraction of 10.50
    percent in May on a year-on-year basis—also helped.
  • WPI inflation—in the negative zone since November 2014—stood
    at 6.18 percent in May last year and (-) 2.65 percent in April 2015.
  • For the month under review, manufactured products inflation
    stood at (-) 0.64 percent, lower than (-) 0.52 percent in the previous month.
  • Led by nearly 50 percent fall in potato prices, the
    vegetable price inflation contracted 5.54 percent in May this year.

Snapdeal acquires
Letsgomo Labs
  • To strengthen its position in the m-commerce domain, online
    marketplace Snapdeal today announced that it has acquired Letsgomo Labs, a
    mobility solutions company.
  • Founded by Manav Kamboj and Vikas Banga, the 76 member team
    of Letsgomo work across mobile technologies, design and strategy; consults
    businesses right from building mobile strategies to conceptualization of
    applications and mobile sites to implementation and hosting. The company also
    works with e-commerce companies to help them strengthen mobile capabilities.
  • With the acquisition, Letsgomo team, now a part of Snapdeal
    will further strengthen the organisation’s mobile technology capabilities. 75%
    of the orders on Snapdeal already come via mobile-based transactions. The the
    recent acquisitions of Martmobi and Freecharge, Snapdeal takes another step
    towards further strengthening its mobile platform.

India
Bibek Debroy
committee on railway restructuring submitted report to Union Ministry of
Railways
  • The High Level Committee (HLC) on railway restructuring
    headed by Dr Bibek Debroy on 12 June 2015 submitted its final report to the
    Union Ministry of Railways.
  • The HLC known as the Committee for Mobilization of Resources
    for Major Railway Projects and Restructuring of Railway Ministry and Railway
    Board was formed in September 2014.

For implementing
its recommendations the committee has given the following timetable
  • Immediate–Liberalization,
    or the allowing of private entry; changes in the composition of the Railway
    Board.
  • 0-2 years–Decentralization
    to zones/divisions; cleaning up finances between Union government and IR.
  • 2 years–Reform of
    RPF, schools and medical services; transition to commercial accounting, reform
    of production and construction units.
  • 3 years–Changes
    in the Railways Act and the Railway Board Act, setting up a Regulator; unified
    entry into the Railway services; resolution of social costs.
  • 5 years–Bifurcation
    between Railway Infrastructure Corporation and rest of IR as train operators;
    end of the Railway Budget.
  • 7 years–Transition
    of the IR that operates trains to a government-owned SPV.

Union Government
launched mobile app to locate nearest blood bank
  • Union Government on 14 June 2015 launched Mobile Blood Bank
    Locator App. The app was launched on the occasion of World Blood Donors Day
    with an aim to ease access of information regarding the nearest blood bank in
    the country.
  • Ministry of Health said that the National Blood Transfusion
    Council (NBTC) has made available directory of all 2760 licensed blood banks at
    National Health Portal.

Railway Ministry
decided to run Suvidha Trains
  • Ministry of Railways on 12 June 2015 decided to run Suvidha
    trains with dynamic fares from July 2015. The decision to run Suvidha trains
    was taken to address the rush during peak travel seasons.
  • These trains will have dynamic fare system and there will
    not be any downward movement of the fare. Also, these trains may be run during
    peak seasons like winter rush, summer rush, Dussehra rush, Holi rush and on
    other occasions.
  • Only confirmed and RAC tickets will be issued for these
    trains and there will be no waiting list. No concession like free
    passes/complimentary passes/warrant/concessional voucher will be available on
    these trains.
  • The maximum advance reservation period will be 30 days while
    the minimum advance reservation period will be of 10 days.
  • Full adult fare shall be changed for all passengers
    irrespective of their age.

Appointments
Ameising Luikham
takes over as New Secretary, Department of Public Enterprises

  • Shri Ameising Luikham, IAS (MN:1981) today took over as
    Secretary, Department of Public Enterprises in the M/o Heavy Industries &
    Public Enterprises .
  • Prior to this he was working as Secretary, North Eastern
    Council, Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region.
  • Shri Luikham’s appointment is vice Shri Kapil Dev Tripathi,
    IAS (AM:1980) who already have been appointed as Secretary, Ministry of
    Petroleum and Natural Gas.

Kapil Mishra Sworn In
As Delhi Law Minister
  • First-time MLA Kapil Mishra was today sworn-in as a Cabinet
    minister in the Delhi government and given charge of the Law Department.
  • Known as a loyalist of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal,
    34-year-old Mishra replaces Jitender Singh Tomar who had resigned from the post
    last week following his arrest on charge of possessing fake degrees.
  • Mishra, MLA from Karawal Nagar, was administered oath of
    office and secrecy by Lt Governor Najeeb Jung at a simple ceremony at the Raj
    Bhavan.
  • Kejriwal, his cabinet colleagues and top officials of Delhi
    government were present on the occasion.
  • 34-year-old Mishra’s name was also doing rounds for a
    ministerial berth when AAP won a landslide victory in February. However, he was
    made the vice-chairman of Delhi Jal Board.

  • World Blood Donors Day (WBDD) was observed on 14 June 2015.
    The theme of the 2015 World Blood Donor Day campaign is “Thank you for
    saving my life”.
  • The theme focuses on thanking blood donors who save lives
    every day through their blood donation and encourages more people across the
    earth to donate blood voluntarily and regularly with the slogan “Give freely,
    give often. Blood donation matters.”
