JK govt set up a 10-member council for the conservation of biological diversity

  • The Jammu & Kashmir government has set up a 10-member council for conservation of biological diversity and sustainable use of its components in the Union territory.
  • As per an order issued by the General Administrative Department (GAD), sanction has been accorded to constitute the Jammu and Kashmir Biodiversity Council.
  • The Council will be headed by the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests as chairman of the 10-member panel.
  • The council will constitute a fund known as “Jammu and Kashmir Biodiversity Council Fund”.
  • The council will perform the functions within the jurisdiction of the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir.
  • The council will function upon the consultation with the National Biodiversity Authority, notify the format and procedures for seeking approvals with regard to biodiversity issues.

Chinese navy becomes world’s largest navy

  • China, home to the world’s largest navy, is looking to set up new PLA bases in the Indo-Pacific region.
  • This was revealed by the Pentagon in a detailed report to the US Congress on September 1, 2020.
  • The other nations reported to be on China’s radar include Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, the UAE, Kenya, Seychelles, Tanzania, Angola and Tajikistan.
  • China’s naval fleet comprises 350 warships and submarines including 130 major surface combatants.
  • The number is greater than the US Navy’s force-level of 293 warships, as per the Pentagon report.

  • Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2021 has been released and under the overall category, University of Oxford, United Kingdom, has topped the list.
  • From India, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, has been placed in the 301-350 category in overall global rankings.

Highlights:

  • The IISc Bengaluru has slightly improved its overall score, from 45.6 to 47.9.
  • The seven older IITs did not participate in the THE-World University Rankings 2020.
  • The THE World University Rankings 2021 includes more than 1,500 universities across 93 countries and regions in 2020.
  • The participating universities are ranked based on their performance in knowledge transfer, teaching, research, and international outlook.

India ranked 3rd in largest solar market in 2019: Mercom global listing; Top- China

  • India has been ranked third in terms of the largest solar market in 2019 as per Mercer Global listing for 2019. India had 9% of the world’s installed capacity.
  • China has topped the ranking with 30 Gw (26% of world capacity). The US is on the second rank.
  • Adani Green Energy has emerged as the top Solar Developer in 2019 with 12.3 Gw capacity.

Isha and Akash Ambani included in Fortune Magazine’s list of most influential young leaders

  • Isha and Akash Ambani, Ambani scions, and Jio Board directors have been included by Fortune Magazine in the ’40 under 40’ list of the most influential young leaders for the year under the technology section.
  • As per the US-based publication, after Akash and Isha Ambani joined the Jio Board, the valuation of the business rose to USD 65 billion.

India, Russia finalise deal to manufacture AK-47 203 Rifles

  • India and Russia on September 3, 2020 finalised a deal to manufacture AK-47 203 rifles in India.
  • The deal was finalised during the ongoing visit of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to Russia.
  • The AK-47 203 Rifles will be made in India under the joint venture Indo-Russia Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL), which was established between the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB), Rosoboronexport and the Kalashnikov Concern.
  • The OFB will own around 50.5% majority stake in IRRPL, Kalashnikov Group will own 42% and Rosoboronexport will own 7.5% stake.
  • The AK-47 203 Rifle of 7.62×39 mm will be manufactured at Uttar Pradesh’s Korwa Ordnance Factory that was inaugurated by PM Modi in 2019.

  • The researchers from Kerala and West Bengal have identified Systomus gracilus,a new cyprinid(family of freshwater fish) fish from Ganges River at Naihati of West Bengal.
  • The discovery was published as an article in the ‘Journal of Experimental Zoology’.
