RBI Announces Steps to Ease Pressure on Liquidity

  • The RBI announced a host of steps, including term repo operations totalling Rs 1 lakh crore in mid-September to ease pressure on the liquidity and maintain congenial financial conditions with a view to ensuring sustainable recovery of economic growth.
  • The RBI said that in order to reduce the cost of funds, banks that had availed of funds under long-term repo operations (LTROs) may exercise an option of reversing these transactions before maturity.
  • The banks may reduce their interest liability by returning funds taken at the repo rate prevailing at that time (5.15 per cent) and availing funds at the current repo rate of 4 per cent.
  • The last date for paying the second instalment of advance tax is September 15.

Indian Bank announces cut of 5 basis points in MCLR for one-year tenure

  • Indian Bank has announced a cut of 5 basis points in its marginal cost of funds-based lending rate (MCLR) for one-year tenure.
  • The bank has decided to reduce the MCLR for one-year tenure by 5 basis points to 7.30 per cent effective from September 3, 2020, Indian Bank said in a regulatory filing.

  • The European Investment Bank (EIB) will invest 650 million euro(€) in the construction of Kanpur’s(Uttar Pradesh) 1st city metro line.
  • The 32.4 km urban rail line, with 18 elevated and 12 underground stations is EIB’s 2nd biggest operation outside the European Union (EU) till date.
  • It is the 2nd metro rail project supported by the EIB in Uttar Pradesh (UP).

Real GDP likely to contract by 10.9 per cent in FY21: SBI Ecowrap

  • After the country’s economy contracted by a record 23.9 per cent in April-June quarter, real GDP for FY21 is expected to shrink by 10.9 per cent, according to State Bank of India’s research report – Ecowrap.
  • It had earlier estimated real gross domestic product (GDP) at (-) 6.8 per cent for the current fiscal.
  • The first quarter GDP contraction compares with 3.1 per cent growth in the preceding January-March quarter and 5.2 per cent expansion in the same period a year back.

Dept of Fertilizers to observe Swachhta Pakhwada from 1-15th September

  • Union Department of Fertilizers, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, is observing Swachhta Pakhwada from 1st to 15th September 2020.
  • All Public sector undertakings (PSUs) and other Organizations under the Department are participating in the Swachhta Abhiyan.
  • Swachhta Pakhwada initiative was launched to bring a fortnight of intense focus on the issues and the practices of Swachhata by engaging the Government of India Ministries/Departments in their jurisdictions.
  • The Ministries/ Departments observing Swachhata Pakhwada are monitored closely with the help of the online monitoring system of Swachhata Samiksha.

India to achieve 100 MT coal gasification target by 2030 year

  • Government of India is aiming for 100 million tonnes (MT) coal gasification by 2030.
  • The announcement was made by Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister of Coal and Mines at a webinar organized by the Ministry of Coal (MoC) in New Delhi.
  • To achieve the target, Centre is to invest over Rs.4 lakh crores.
  • The aim of the revised target is to boost the production of synthetic natural gas, energy fuel, urea for fertilizers, and the production of other chemicals.

Centre launches pan-India GTAM in electricity to make Indian Power Market go Green

  • The Minister of State (IC) Power and New & Renewable Energy & Minister of State (Skill Development and Entrepreneurship), Shri R. K. Singh, launched pan-India Green Term Ahead Market (GTAM) in electricity through video conference in New Delhi on 01 September 2020.
  • The GTAM platform is the first Exclusive product for the renewable energy sector in the world and is a step towards Greening the Indian short term power Market.
  • The market would bring down the burden on Renewable Energy (RE) rich States and incentivize them to develop RE capacity beyond their own Renewable Purchase Obligations (RPO).
  • Green Term Ahead Market contracts will allow additional avenues to the RE generators for the sale of renewable energy; enable Obligated entities to procure renewable power at competitive prices to meet their RPO and provide a platform to environmentally conscious open access consumers and utilities to buy green power.
  • This initiative will also help the Government of India to achieve its target of 175 GW RE Capacity by 2022.

Govt. gives nod to 27 integrated cold chain development projects under PM Kisan SAMPADA Yojana

  • Government gave its nod to 27 projects today under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana for development of integrated cold chains and value addition infrastructure in the country.
  • The new integrated cold chain projects will generate direct and indirect employment for over 16,000 people and benefit nearly 2,57,000 farmers.
  • The projects will help in streamlining the agricultural supply chain and generate direct and indirect employment opportunities in rural areas.
  • These 27 new projects will leverage a total investment of Rs 743 crore for the creation of modern, innovative infrastructure and effective cold chain facilities for the food processing sector across various states including Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.
  • 85 Cold Chain Projects have also been considered for financial assistance under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana.

Coal India to invest over Rs 1.22 lakh crore on 500 projects by 2023-24

  • Coal India Ltd (CIL) will invest over 1.22 lakh crore rupees on development of nearly 500 projects related to coal evacuation, infrastructure, project development, exploration and clean coal technologies in the country.
  • The investment aims at making India self-reliant in terms of coal and achieve the production target of 1 billion tonnes by 2023-2024.

India plans to release forensic accounting and investigation standards

  • One police station dedicated to deal with the issue of power theft will be opened in all 75 districts out of which 63 has already started functioning.
  • The government has also raised the number of enforcement teams from 33 to 88 to launch a crackdown against those involved in power pilferage.

MoD sets up a committee to review the AFHQ CS cadre

  • The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has set up a three-member committee to review the effective utilisation of the Armed Forces Headquarters Civil Services (AFHQ CS) cadre.
  • This step has been taken so as to enhance the military’s combat potential and also rebalance defence expenditure, by optimising the civil and military administrative appointments in the service headquarters.
  • It can help save an expenditure of almost Rs 25,000 crore in defence expenditure over the next five years.
  • The committee will be headed by Lt General D B Shekatkar (Retd.).
  • The other two members are R Chandrashekhar, a retired AFHQ cadre officer and AN Das from the MoD finance wing.
