- Today on 2nd August Nation celebrated the 143rd anniversary of Pingali Venkaiah who designed national flag.
- Venkaiah’s design for the National Flag was finally approved by Mahatama Gandhi in a Congress meeting in Vijayawada in 1921.
- He was a Freedom Fighter who born on 2nd August in 1876, near Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh.

- Edelweiss Tokio Life Insurance partnered with payments platform Mobikwik.
- Purpose: to sell ‘miniature’ insurance plans
- There will be life insurance covers of Rs 1 lakh, 3 lakh and 5 lakh with a premium of Rs 148, 443 and 738 per annum. This will be a group insurance solution in the term segment.

Vistara to launch Mumbai-Dubai flight services from August 21
- Vistara announced expansion of its overseas services with a daily flight to Dubai from Mumbai, starting August 21.

- Vistara has added Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) as the second international destination to its network.

Bharti Airtel will shut down its entire 3G network across India’s 22 telecom circles by March 2020.

- The Swachh Bharat Mission is pan India campaign plan to clean India by streets, roads,cities,towns. The mission aimed to clean during a period of 2014-2019.
- Swachh Bharat mission is one of the largest cleanliness drives in the world.
- It is an attempt introduced by the NDA-led government to initiate behavioural change.

West Bengal launches awareness campaign for preserving greenery and keeping environment clean
- The West Bengal Government has launched an awareness campaign for preserving the greenery and keeping the environment clean.
- The State Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched the campaign named as ‘Save Green, Stay Clean’ in Kolkata.
- The State Government will distribute more than 1 lakhs saplings throughout the state for spreading of greenery.

Odisha govt to launch ‘Mo College’ initiative
- The Odisha government will launch ‘Mo College’ initiative.
- Objective: to create a platform where alumni of institutes can connect and contribute for the development of their alma mater.
- It was announced by Higher Education Minister Arun Sahoo in Odisha assembly.
- Mo College, which means my college, is a part of Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s 5T action plan.
- Note: The 5Ts aim at achieving progress through Transparency, Teamwork, Technology, Time and Transformation.

India and UK launch clean air initiative in Bengaluru
- India and UK jointly launched ‘The Innovation for Clean Air (IfCA)’ in Bengaluru.
- This two-year UK-India joint initiative provides Indian and UK stakeholders opportunities to test interventions related to air quality and EV integration.
- The initiative provides a unique measurement system for air quality by integrating satellite and sensor data and helping to support India’s transition to electric vehicles.
- The programme is led by Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), and is funded by the Newton Fund with matched resources from various partners in Karnataka and India.

Nigeria becomes fourth African nation to join global coalition to protect pollinators
- Nigeria became the fourth African country to join the Global Coalition of the willing on Pollinators on July 25, 2019
- Morocco became a member of this group. Ethiopia is the first African nation to be part of this global coalition in 2017. Burundi is the second African country to join this global group.
- Other non-African nations such as Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Dominican Republic, Ireland and Mexico had joined the global group last year.
- The coalition now has 28 signatories including 17 European countries, five from Latin America and the Caribbean and four from Africa.
Indian tourists exempted from visa fees by Sri Lankan govt
- India is among 48 countries whose citizens have been exempted from visa fees for tourism purposes by Sri Lankan government.
- Sri Lankan tourism minister John Amaratunga said visa fees, which ranged from 20 to 40 US dollars, will not be charged for grant of one month visa for tourism.
- The tourists can apply for electronic travel authorisations online or apply for visa on arrival.
- Indian tourist constitutes the maximum number with around one fourth of total tourist arrivals. Tourism is Sri Lanka’s third largest and fastest growing source of foreign currency last year, accounting for almost 5 percent of gross domestic product in 2018.

Mindtree appoints Cognizant’s Debashis Chatterjee as new CEO
- Debashis Chatterjee has been named as the new managing director and CEO of Bengaluru-based IT services firm Mindtree Ltd. for a period of five years.
- Previous to this, he was the President of Global Delivery at Cognizant and was also the company’s global leader for digital systems and technology practice.
- The company also appointed SN Subrahmanyan as the company’s new non-executive vice chairman.
- Subrahmanyan currently serves as L&T group’s managing director and CEO.
- Chatterjee will be the first individual outside the 7-member founding team of Mindtree to be appointed as the CEO in the two-decade old firm.

Journalist Ravish Kumar among 2019 Ramon Magsaysay award winners
- Indian journalist Ravish Kumar has been awarded the 2019 Ramon Magsaysay Award for “harnessing journalism to give voice to the voiceless”.
- He is among five individuals who were declared winners of the award.
- Kumar, 44, who is NDTV India’s senior executive editor is one of India’s most influential TV journalists.
The four other winners of the 2019 Ramon Magsaysay Award are:
- Ko Swe Win (Myanmar): He is a human rights defender and the chief editor of Myanmar Noe news agency.
- Angkhana Neelapajit (Thailand): He is a human rights activist and a leading human rights defender in Southern Thailand.
- Raymundo Pujante Cayabyab (Philippines): He is a musician who has served as the music faculty of the University of the Philippines and has conducted free workshops for thousands of Students.
- Kim Jong-Ki (South Korea): He is an activist working with violence and mental health issues in youth.
