Corporation Bank launches ‘SB Challenger’ campaign

  • Corporation Bank has launched a month-long ‘SB Challenger’ campaign to expand its savings account base. The campaign ends on August 23.
  • “The campaign is targeted at garnering customers under the bank’s premium savings account variants – ‘Corp Elite’ and ‘Corp Delite’ – customised for salaried employees of public sector undertakings and the government sector.
  • ‘Corp Delite’ offers term life insurance cover and personal accident cover of Rs 10 lakh each.
  • Employees with a gross salary of ₹75,000 and above are eligible under the variant and are covered under the insurance on opening the account.
  • ‘Corp Elite’ is targeted at customers earning salary between Rs15,000 and Rs 74,999, and offers term life insurance cover and personal accident cover of Rs 5 lakh each in addition to the regular SB account features.

US slapped 5 billion US Dollar fine on Facebook for users’ privacy violation

  • US regulators formalized a record 5 billion US Dollar fine on Facebook for violation of users’ privacy in the Cambridge Analytica data scandal involving 87 million users.
  • The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) informed that the penalty was the largest ever imposed on any company for violating consumers’ privacy.
  • The FTC initiated the investigation after a scandal involving former British consulting firm Cambridge Analytica, which was accused of illegally accessing data of more than 87 million Facebook users without their prior knowledge.

  • PayPal India house involves 100 engineers across roles including risk management and operations.

  • The new centre will focus on leveraging PayPal’s extensive expertise in data science, risk management and machine learning to identify and protect them from fraud.

New India-UK scheme to fund students from UK to visit India

  • A new India-UK bilateral pilot scheme has been launched to support Britain’s universities to collaborate with Indian partners to send UK students to India during their studies.
  • The “UKEIRI Mobility Programme: Study in India”, an initiative of Universities UK International (UUKI) and British Council India.
  • It aims to generate up to 200 opportunities for undergraduate students at UK universities to visit India by March 2021.
  • The Study in India programme will support national and institutional-level objectives to increase the levels of outward student mobility from the UK to 13 per cent by 2020, as set out in UUKi’s “Go International: Stand Out” campaign.

15th Finance Commission on three-day visit to Chhattisgarh

  • The Finance Commission is on a three-day visit to Chhattisgarh from 23rd July to 25th July.
  • On the last day of its visit tomorrow, the Commission will have a detailed discussion with Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel along with his cabinet colleagues.
  • There will be a presentation to the Finance Commission on the State’s finances followed by discussions.

Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank withdraws funding to Amaravati project

  • Beijing-based Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) withdrawn funding for the Amaravati capital city project in Andhra Pradesh (AP).
  • The AIIB is to finance the upcoming city by providing $200 million.
  • The World Bank to fund the Amaravati project with $300 million.
  • The multilateral agency for financing the proposed ‘Amaravati Sustainable Infrastructure and Institutional Development Project’.
  • The total cost required for the Amaravati project is $715 million.

  • Objective: to discuss the priorities in monitoring shark and ray fisheries, trade and market chain assessment.
  • The event organised at the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI).

India ranked 52nd  in global innovation index 2019

  • The GII 2019 was released by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal in New Delhi.
  • This is for the first time that the GII was launched in an emerging economy.
  • The theme this year is Creating Healthy Lives – The Future of Medical Innovation, which aims to explore the role of medical innovation as it shapes the future of healthcare.
  • The Index ranks innovative performances of 129 economies around the world on 80 indicators including political environment, education, infrastructure and business sophistication.
  • India improved its rank in the Global Innovation Index to 52nd, in 2019, making a significant jump of 5 places in a year. It was at 57th position in 2018.
  • Switzerland retained its number-one spot on the index.

ADB sanctions about Rs 2000 Cr for power projects in Tripura

  • Asian Development Bank has sanctioned 1,925 crore rupees project for upgradation of power generation and distribution in Tripura.
  • The project has been sanctioned for upgrading capacity of 63 MW Rokhia Project to 120 MW at an estimated cost of over 699 crore and modernising Gumti Hydro Electric Project at an estimated cost of nearly 1225 crore rupees.
  • Rokhia project is located at West Tripura district whereas Gumti project is in Gomati district.

  • Union Cabinet has approved the merger of National Institute of Miners’ Health with ICMR – National Institute of Occupational Health.
  • Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar announced that this will beneficial for both institutes and it is another example of maximum governance and minimum government.
  • This will help both the institutes in terms of enhanced expertise in the field of occupational health besides efficient management of public money.

Virat Kohli holds on to No 1 spot in ICC Test Rankings

  • India skipper Virat Kohli has retained his number one position in the latest ICC Test batsmen’s rankings.
  • Kohli, who last featured in India’s 2-1 Test series win over Australia, is sitting on 922 points. New Zealand’s Kane Williamson (913) is second and Cheteshwar Pujara (881) third in the rankings.
  • In the team rankings, India remain in the first place followed by New Zealand (2) and South Africa (3) with England (4) and Australia (5) rounding up the top five.
  • In the bowlers’ list, two Indians feature in the top 10 with Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin holding the sixth and 10th spot respectively.
  • In the all-rounders’ list, Jadeja is the best-ranked Indian at the third spot.
  • The left-arm spinner sits behind West Indies’ Jason Holder and Shakib Al Hasan of Bangladesh.

  • The documents are handed over by S Anbuvelan, General Manager of Helicopter Division-HAL to Commodore Vikram Menon, VSM, CSO(Air), HQNA at an event held at HAL facilities.
  • It is used for the supply of eight Chetak helicopters with the delivery schedule of the first two in August 2019 and the rest in August 2020.

Russian boxer Maxim Dadashev dies after sustaining brain injury in the ring

  • Russian boxer Maxim Dadashev died after sustaining brain injury in the ring at an age of 28.
  • Dadashev was quickly rushed to a Cheverly, Md., hospital for emergency surgery. He later died there.
