ICICI to open 450 branches by next financial year

  • Private sector lender ICICI Bank is planning to open 450 branches in the forthcoming financial year.
  • Among the planned 450 branches, 320 branches have already been added.
  • After the installation of the 320 operational branches for customers, the bank has crossed the milestone of having 5,000 branches.
  • The branch that was opened at Thane in Maharashtra is the 5000th (milestone) branch of ICICI.

RBI barred PMC Bank from doing business for six months

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) barred the Punjab & Maharashtra Cooperative Bank Ltd (PMC Bank), Mumbai to carry out the majority of its routine business for 6 months.
  • RBI has barred the PMC Bank from carrying out its functions including granting, renewing and loans and advances, make any investments, accept fresh deposits, transactions for a period of six months.
  • The RBI has also restricted the PMC Bank’s depositors to withdraw more than Rs.1,000 from their savings/current/other deposit accounts.

  • Wipro, the Bengaluru-based software services provider has tied up with Febraban, an industry body representing the Brazil’s financial services industry.
  • Wipro will develop an online platform “Noomis” for the financial services industry in Brazil.
  • Noomis will serve as a meeting point and a discussion platform for the finance professionals in Brazil who will participate in CIAB, an information technology trade show for financial services organized by FEBRABAN.
  • Noomis will provide reliable, analytical, and unbiased information via news reports, videos, and newsletters that will enable participants to stay up to date on financial market trends.

SEBI penalises Aurobindo Pharma and promoters for insider trading

  • Securities and Exchange Board of India has imposed a penalty of over Rs 22 crore on Aurobindo Pharma and its promoters.
  • They have been penalised for violating insider trading norms.
  • The regulator had conducted an investigation into the trading in the scrip of Aurobindo Pharma Ltd.
  • SEBI found that these entities purchased shares while in possession of the UPSI pertaining to Aurobindo, and made unlawful gains from having purchased its shares at a lower price before the publication of the unpublished price sensitive information (UPSI).

PM launched CDRI at UNSG Climate Action Summit

  • Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) at the United Nations Secretary-General (UNSG) Climate Action Summit which is being held in New York.
  • The summit is hosted by UNSG Mr. António Guterres.
  • The summit aims to ramp up climate actions worldwide.
  • PM Modi presented the country’s practical approach and roadmap to mitigate climate change in the summit. PM invited the UN Member states to join CDRI.
  • The proposal to set up CDRI was initially approved by the Prime Minister on 13 August 2019.
  • It aims to bring together the largest number of state heads to generate commitments to combat the effects of climate change and resulting disasters.
  • India has announced Rs.480 crore to the CDRI for the next 5 years.
  • It will help fund technical assistance and research projects, setting up of offices and covering recurring expenditures under the initiative.

Centre launched UMMID to tackle inherited genetic diseases

  • Centre has launched the Unique Methods of Management and treatment of Inherited Disorders (UMMID) initiative.
  • It was launched by the Union Minister for Science & Technology, Earth Sciences and Health & Family Welfare, Dr. Harsh Vardhan.
  • He also inaugurated the National Inherited Diseases Administration (NIDAN) Kendras.
  • It is supported by Department of Biotechnology (DBT) under the Ministry of Science and Technology.
  • UMMID aims to tackle inherited genetic diseases of newborn babies.
  • The initiative will ensure proper treatment to children and create awareness amongst the masses.
  • UMMID initiative aims to work towards achieving wellness by promoting the prevention of genetic diseases under the National Health Policy, 2017 of the government.

India to increase the renewable energy target to 450GW

  • PM Narendra Modi announced that India is to increase the renewable energy target to 450 GW.
  • He made the announcement at the United Nations Climate Action Summit.
  • PM has also presented a practical approach and a road map to achieve the target.
  • He also reiterated India’s commitment to the creation of 175 GW renewable energy capacity by 2022 under the Paris Climate Agreement.

India’s strategies to achieve the target:

  1. India is to spend approximately $50 billion on the Jal Jeevan Mission to conserve water, harvest rainwater and develop water resources.
  2. India has planned to considerably increase the proportion of the biofuel blend in petrol and diesel.
  3. India has plans to make the transport sector green through the use of electrical vehicles.
  4. The country has banned single-use plastics
  5. The International Solar Alliance (ISA), an Indian-led initiative, under which India had provided 160 million families with cooking gas connections.

Centre proposed a digital census for 2021 Census

  • Centre has proposed a digital census, a mobile app used to collect data to determine the population of the country in the next census of India in 2021.
  • The proposal was announced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
  • He also proposed the idea of a multipurpose ID card for every citizen which includes passport, Aaadhar, and the voter card.
  • The digital technology for the upcoming Census will use Aadhaar number for the compilation of National Population Register (NPR).
  • Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has approved the voluntary use of Aadhaar number.
  • By including Aadhaar details, the NPR database would contain demographic as well as biometric particulars.
  • Census 2021 will be conducted in major Indian languages and on the mobile app.
  • The government is to spend Rs.12,000 crore for the decadal exercise and development of NPR.

STATE CURRENT AFFAIRS

Pink tickets for women for free travel in DTC and cluster

  • Pink tickets will be issued to women passengers under the Delhi government’s scheme for free travel in DTC and cluster buses which was approved by the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) board.
  • The scheme has been approved till March 2020 and it will be rolled out on Bhai Dooj on October 29.
  • Women travelling in DTC and cluster buses will be given pink tickets having a face value of Rs 10 each.
  • The government will then reimburse the transporter based on the number of such tickets issued.

Online Pollution Certificate Mandatory In Odisha From October 1

  • An online pollution certificate will be mandatory in Odisha from October 1,
  • The manual Pollution Under Control Certificate (PUC) issued before September 30 will remain valid.
  • The fee for Pollution Under Control Certificate (PUC) for two and three-wheelers is Rs. 60, for light motor vehicle (LMV) is Rs. 100 and for medium and heavy motor vehicle is Rs. 150 (GST extra)
  • The Pollution Testing Centres will stop issuing manual certificates from October 1.
  • Odisha Government made the online pollution certificate mandatory from October 1.

  • The Special Observers will supervise and monitor all the works that are carried by the electoral machinery.
  • The observers will also ensure that necessary and effective enforcement actions are taken based on intelligence inputs and complaints received.

Exercise Tiger Triumph between India and the US scheduled for November

  • India and the United States are to hold their first tri-services exercise named Tiger Triumph at Visakhapatnam and Kakinada in November 2019.

  • This will be the first such tri-service military exercise that is being held by the US and India.

  • He has played 67 first-class matches, scored 3336 runs, with six centuries and 16 half-centuries.
  • He made his Test debut against Pakistan at the Cricket Club of India (CCI) in Mumbai on November 1952 and played his last test against West Indies at Kingston in April 1953.
