AAI observes Aviation Safety Awareness Week 2020 (23-27 November 2020)

  • Airports Authority of India (AAI) is observing the Aviation Safety Awareness Week 2020 from 23 November to 27 November 2020.
  • The week-long celebration is being observed at all airports and ANS locations managed by AAI across India.
  • Airport Directors will be organizing awareness programme in school/colleges on role of local residents in aviation safety to make people of surrounding community aware about their role in ensuring safety of aircraft operation in local airport.

BANKING & FINANCE 

ADB approves $50 mn loan to improve resource planning in West Bengal

  • The Asian Development Bank said it has approved a USD 50 million loan to improve operational efficiencies and resource planning and management in West Bengal.
  • The loan will support the integration of financial and information system and the expansion of automation reforms in the operations of the state government, which are expected to strengthen the delivery of public services and create fiscal savings.
  • The loan will be supplemented by a USD 350,000 technical assistance grant for capacity building, monitoring of IFMS (Integrated Financial Management System) reforms, and strengthening the integration of social and gender aspects in reform areas.

India’s first moss garden built in Nainital district of Uttarakhand

  • India’s first Moss Garden has been unveiled at Khurpatal in Nainital district of Uttarakhand.
  • The iconic garden, developed by the Uttarakhand forest department is spread over an area of 10 hectares.
  • Moss Garden, Khurpatal houses around 30 different species of moss and certain other bryophyte species.

Education Minister inaugurates 46 online ATAL Faculty Development Programmes

  • Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ today inaugurated 46 online AICTE Training and Learning (ATAL) Academy Faculty Development Programmes (FDPs) to train teachers of higher education institutions.
  • The FDPs will be conducted in 22 Indian states.
  • The online Faculty Development Programmes will be conducted according to the new National Education Policy -2020.

HM Amit Shah inaugurates mobile COVID-19 RT-PCR Lab at ICMR in New Delhi

  • Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated a mobile COVID-19 RT-PCR Lab at the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in New Delhi on Monday.
  • It has been jointly developed by Spice Health and the ICMR.
  • This testing lab and more such labs which are planned to be set up will help in adding more capacity to COVID-19 testing.
  • The lab is accredited by NABL and approved by the ICMR.

Deep Depression over South West Bay of Bengal intensifies into Cyclonic Storm ‘Nivar’

  • The Deep Depression over the South West Bay of Bengal has intensified into the Cyclonic Storm “Nivar,” on 24 November 2020.
  • The cyclone is currently located 410 km east-southeast of Puducherry and 450 km southeast of Chennai.
  • As per the India Meteorological Department, Cyclone Nivar is very likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm in the next 24-hours.
  • The storm shall cross Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mamallapuram around Puducherry on November 25 evening.
  • The impact of the Cyclone shall be faced by the governments of Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka.
  • Maximum hazard will be caused to Tamil Nadu, which has been placed under ‘red’ (take action) alert.
  • The NDRF has formed 30 teams to launch rescue and relief operations in these states in view of the cyclone ‘Nivar.’

Safaimitra Suraksha Challenge Launched for Many Cities

  • The Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs launched the Safaimitra Suraksha Challenge in 243 cities.

Safaimitra Suraksha Challenge:

  • The challenge is to prevent the “hazardous cleaning” of sewers and septic tanks and promote their mechanized cleaning.
  • The challenge will be broadly focused on raising citizens’ awareness of this key issue, as well as building infrastructure for mechanized cleaning and labor capacity building.
  • In addition, a special service hotline number has been set up to register complaints and provide real-time solutions for sludge or sewer overflow.
  • The actual field evaluation of participating cities will be conducted by an independent agency in May 2021, and the evaluation results will be announced on 15th August 2021.
  • Cities will be divided into three sub-categories – Population exceeds 10 lakhs, 3-10 lakhs, Up to 3 lakhs.
  • The total prize money is 52 crore rupees and the prize money will be distributed to all categories of winning cities.

Digital museum opens at Maharaj Bada in Gwalior, MP

  • In Madhya Pradesh, a digital museum has been opened at Maharaj Bada in Gwalior for the public.
  • The museum is developed by Gwalior Smart City and entry for the public is being made free for a few days.
  • It is the first center of its kind in Gwalior and Bundelkhand area and will play a role in educating school students.
  • In the Digital Museum, the architectural styles, objects, costumes, lifestyle, musical instruments, jewelry, handicrafts, cultural tradition, painting and many genres of paintings have been digitally displayed in a modern way.

Mission Purvodaya – Japan to Become a Partner Country

  • The Union Minister of the Iron &Steel and the Japanese ambassador to India met with the Chief Minister of Odisha State to discuss the ways for Japan to become a partner country of the Purvodaya Mission.
  • The Purvodaya delegation in the steel industry envisages the establishment of an integrated steel hub in eastern India.
  • Of India’s anticipated new steel production capacity, more than 75% of the resources will come from eastern India, and Odisha alone will exceed 100 MTPA.
  • High-grade steel, downstream industries, auxiliary equipment, capital goods and cluster development have great scope for growth.

Malaysia Hosts 2020 APEC Summit

  • The 2020 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting was held on 20 November 2020 under the Chairmanship of Malaysian Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
  • This was the first time that all 21 APEC Economic Leaders met virtually due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The theme of the APEC Malaysia 2020 was “Optimising Human Potential Towards a Resilient Future of Shared Prosperity: Pivot. Prioritise. Progress”.
  • The APEC 2020 ended with the adoption of the APEC Putrajaya Vision 2040 and the 2020 Kuala Lumpur Declaration.

India to host G-20 Summit in 2023

  • India will host the Summit of the G20 Group in 2023. India was earlier slated to host the summit in 2022.
  • However, now the G20 Summit be be hosted by Italy in 2021, Indonesia in 2022, India in 2023 and Brazil in 2024.
  • India and Indonesia have swapped their respective hosting year of G20 as Indonesia would also chair the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2023.

Union Education Minister Holds A Review Meeting On UBA

  • The Union Education Minister held a review meeting on the progress of the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan Plan (UBA) via video conference.
  • Unnat Bharat Abhiyan is inspired by the vision of transformative change in the rural development process, and it uses knowledge institutions to help build an inclusive Indian architecture.
  • The Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) launched UBA to connect higher education institutions including Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) with local communities Cooperation to meet development challenges through appropriate technology.

India, EU hold 6th round of consultations on disarmament & non-proliferation matters

  • India and the European Union today held the sixth round of consultations on disarmament and non-proliferation matters in a virtual format.
  • The consultations aim at enhancing mutual understanding and appreciation between India and the EU on international security issues.
  • The consultations involved exchanges on developments in the area of nuclear, chemical, biological disarmament and non-proliferation, conventional weapons, outer space security issues, export control regimes, strategic stability environment and other developments of mutual interest.

Foreign Office Consultations between India and Kazakhstan held

  • The 7th round of Foreign office consultations was held between India and Kazakhstan was held on November 17, 2020.
  • During the consultation, the 2 sides reviewed the entire scope of bilateral cooperation within the framework of their strategic partnership.
  • Consultations covered political, economic and commercial, energy, defence, space, consular and cultural affairs.
  • Signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on “India grant assistance for the implementation of high-impact community development projects in Kazakhstan”.

ACQUISITION & MERGER

IBM to Acquire SAP Consulting Partner TruQua

  • IBM said that it has acquired TruQua, an IT services and consulting company focused on SAP’s finance and analytics technologies.
  • Big Blue said the deal will support its hybrid growth strategy and expand its breadth of consulting services.
  • IBM said the deal is expected to close in Q4 2020. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Karnataka Governor presents Doctor of Science honorary doctorate upon ISRO Chairman

  • Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala presented Doctor of Science honorary doctorate upon ISRO Chairman K Sivan.
  • The Visvesvaraya Technological University has conferred the doctorate to him.

DEFENCE CURRENT AFFAIRS

Indian Navy gets 9th P-8I anti-submarine warfare aircraft from Boeing

  • The Indian Navy have received its ninth P-8I long range maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare aircraft.
  • India had first signed a contract with Boeing in 2009 for eight P-8Is to replace the Indian Navy’s aging Tupolev Tu-142M maritime surveillance turboprops.
  • The ninth aircraft has been received under the nearly $1 billion deal signed by Indian Navy with the Boeing for four additional planes in 2016.
  • The aircraft landed at INS Hansa in Goa on 18 November 2020. It is being used by India in Ladakh for surveillance besides the Indian Ocean Region.
  • The remaining three are scheduled to be handed over to India in 2021.

Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi passes away

  • Three-time Assam Chief Minister from Congress party Tarun Gogoi, has passed away after been undergoing treatment for post-Covid complications. He was 84.
  • Tarun Gogoi had served as the Chief Minister of Assam between 2001 and 2015.
  • He was the longest serving chief minister of Assam.

Sahitya Academy award winning Telugu Poet Shaik Khaja Hussain passes away

  • Noted Telugu poet, journalist, scriptwriter Shaik Khaja Hussain, has passed away after brief illness. He was 70.
  • Popularly known as Devi Priya, the renowned poet bagged the Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award in 2017, for his book Gaali Rangu.

Ray Clemence, former England goalkeeper passes away

  • Former England, Liverpool and Tottenham goalkeeper Ray Clemence has died aged 72.
  • Clemence, who won five league titles and three European Cups with Liverpool between 1967 and 1981, was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in 2005.

First Lady of Odisha Sushila Devi passes away

  • Sushila Devi, wife of Odisha Governor Prof Ganeshi Lal, passed away at SUM Ultimate Hospital in Bhubaneshwar City. The First Lady of the State was undergoing treatment after testing positive for COVID-19. She was 74.
  • A constant companion in various activities of the governor, she was religious and had a passion for socio- cultural pursuits.

Veteran TV actor Ashiesh Roy passes away

  • Television actor Ashiesh Roy has passed away, suffering from kidney ailment during the coronavirus lockdown. He was 55.
  • The actor had appeared in a number of TV shows and films in his long acting career which began in 1997
  • Some of his famous television shows includes Movers & Shakers, Yes Boss, Remix, Baa Bahoo Aur Baby, Chaldi Da Naam Gaddi, Burey Bhi Hum Bhale Bhi Hum, Sasural Simar Ka, Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi, Mere Angne Mein, Aarambh.
