24th July: CBDT celebrates Aaykar Diwas or Income Tax Day

  • The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has celebrated its 159th Income Tax Day or Aaykar Diwas.
  • On 24th July, 1860 Income Tax was introduced for the first time in India by Sir James Wilson.
  • Purpose: to compensate for the losses incurred by the British regime during the first war of independence against British Rule.

RBI names Kanungo to run monetary policy portfolio after Viral Acharya quits

  • Reserve Bank of India has assigned the work of Monetary Policy Portfolio and forecasting department to the RBI Deputy governor B P Kanungo.
  • After the exit of Viral Acharya, B P Kanungo became the 6th member of RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee.
  • Kanungo will also look after economic and policy research and statistics and information management.
  • All the other three deputy governors — N S Vishwanathan, B P Kanungo and M K Jain — have been made responsible for 12 departments each.

CCMB unveils new Next Gen Sequencing facility

  • The Centre For Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) received a state-of-the-art facility for its genomic studies division.
  • It was inaugurated by Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr Harsh Vardhan.
  • The minister also laid the foundation stone for a new skill training and lecture hall complex on the occasion.

Vande Bharat completes test run from Delhi to Katra in 8 hrs

  • India’s fastest train Vande Bharat Express successfully completed its test run from New Delhi to Katra in eight hours.
  • The train can run up to a maximum speed of 160 km per hour.
  • Vande Bharat Express has features like Wi-Fi, bio-vacuum toilets, hot case, freezer, and GPS-based passenger information system among other amenities, green footprints, this fully ‘Make in India’ which can save up to 30 per cent of electrical energy.

Kerala Organised Nishagandhi Monsoon Ragas Music Festival

  • Kerala Tourisim organized Nishagandhi Monsoon Ragas Music Festival in Thiruvananthapuram.
  • The five-day annual music festival is being held from 20 to 24 July 2019.
  • Eminent classical musicians Parassala B Ponnammal and T V Gopalakrishnan have been selected for inaugural Nishagandhi Sangeetha Puraskaram.
  • This award has been instituted by Kerala Tourism to honour artists who have made outstanding contributions to music.
  • It carries a cash prize of Rs 1.5 lakh, citation and memento.

Motihari-Amlekhgunj Oil Pipeline ready for commercial operation

  • The landmark Motihari-Amlekhgunj petroleum products pipeline between India and Nepal has been completed and ready for commercial operation.
  • Indian Oil Corporation and Nepal Oil Corporation successfully completed testing transfer of the pipeline.
  • It is a 69 kilometer-long pipeline that will run from Motihari in Bihar to Amelkhgunj in Nepal.
  • It has been constructed by India in just 15 months, which is half of its 30 months deadline.
  • It is the 1st oil pipeline in Nepal, 1st transnational petroleum pipeline from India as well as the 1st South Asian oil pipeline corridor.

WHO declares Ebola outbreak in DRC as a Global Health Emergency

  • World Health Organization (WHO) has declared deadly Ebola outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as ‘Public Health Emergency of International concern’.

Bangladesh develops plastic alternative from jute

  • Scientists in Bangladesh have developed a method to convert Jute fibre into low-cost Bio-Degradable cellulose sheets dubbed as Sonali.
  • It has been developed by the team of scientist working for state-run Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC).
  • Bangladesh is world’s 2nd biggest producer of jute after India.
  • Eco-friendly jute poly bags made up of Sonali can be used- in garments and food packaging work. as wrapping material and carrying bag.

NAM Ministerial Meeting held in Caracas, Venezuela

  • Ministerial meeting of Coordinating Bureau of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) was held in Caracas, capital of Venezuela.
  • Theme : “Promotion and Consolidation of Peace through Respect for International Law”
  • Since 2016 Venezuela has held the presidency of NAM which will now be passed on to Azerbaijan in October 2019.
  • India was represented by Indian envoy to United Nations Syed Akbaruddin.
  • Issues raised by India at NAM Meet included- Climate change, Digital Technologies and Terrorism. India highlighted that Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) needs to be re-examined and revise its methodology.

Maharashtra tops in ATM frauds, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka follow

  • As Per the data released by Reserve Bank Of India (RBI) , Maharashtra state-reported around 233 cases of ATM fraud in 2018-19.
  • Delhi grabbed the second spot with 179 cases this is followed by Tamil Nadu with 147 cases .
  • In Maharashtra, people lost Rs 4.8 crore to bank fraud, in Delhi people around Rs 2.9 crore is involved in bank fraudAssam, Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura are the only three states a single incident.

NPCI ties up with JCB for global RuPay card

  • The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and JCB International, along with domestic banks, have launched RuPay JCB Global Cards.
  • Banks including State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Axis Bank, Union Bank of India, Central Bank of India, Andhra Bank, City Union Bank, and TJSB Bank will issue these cards, which will be accepted in India at all POS terminals and ATMs that accept JCB cards.
