- International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and Its Abolition observed on August 23.
- This International Day is intended to inscribe the tragedy of the slave trade in the memory of all peoples.
- Director-General of UNESCO invites the Ministers of Culture of all Member States to organize events every year on that date, involving the entire population of their country and in particular young people, educators, artists and intellectuals.
- The UNESCO Executive Board adopted Resolution 29 C/40 at its 29th session.

India to launch e-commerce portal “Bharatcraft” for MSME’s
- Union Government is planning to launch an e-commerce portal named “Bharatcraft” for MSME’s. The portal is based on other e-commerce portals like ‘Alibaba’ and ‘Amazon’.
- The portal will provide a platform for MSMEs to market and sell their products and in turn boost the sector.
- As per the MSME Union Minister, the Bharatcraft portal has a huge potential to generate revenue worth Rs10 lakh crore in next 2-3 years.

Bihar govt takes several measures to ban single use of plastic
- Bihar government has taken several measures following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to ban single use of plastic.
- The government has banned use of single use of carry bags throughout the state.
- Licence of those factories has been cancelled who produces single-use of carry bag.
- Shopkeepers are now using paper and recycling carry bags.
- The state government has announced to ban single use of plastic in marriage party and other ceremonies.
- Besides cup, plates and glass of thermocol will also be banned.

Bihar govt seeks Rs 2,000 cr from Centre for construction of roads damaged due to floods in state
- Bihar government has sought two thousand crores from the Centre for construction of roads damaged due to recent floods in the stat
- Over three thousand kilometres of rural roads were completely damaged in devastating floods. Most of roads were damaged in three districts- Darbhanga, Madhubani and East Champaran.

Russia launches floating nuclear reactor in Arctic
- Russia launched the world’s first floating nuclear reactor.
- The vessel weighs 21,000 tons and has two reactors with a capacity of 35 megawatts each.
- This reactor loaded with nuclear fuel, the Akademik Lomonosov left the Arctic port of Murmansk to begin its 5,000 kilometres (3,000-mile) voyage to Pevek in northeastern Siberia.

- Iran has unveiled new missile defence system “Bavar-373”.

- 6th Convocation Ceremony of Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan held in New Delhi.
- Human Resources Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank said, Sanskrit is the only scientific language of the world.
- In the convocation ceremony, a total of 12,618 students, who have completed various courses of gradation, post-graduation, B.Ed., M.Ed. and Ph.D. conducted by the institute for the years 2015 to 19, were awarded degrees by the Minister.
- 103 students received gold medal for their excellent academic performance.
President Kovind inaugurates the First World Youth Conference
- President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the first-ever World Youth Conference which was organised by the UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) at Vigyan Bhavan, Delhi.
- The theme of the conference was ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam: Gandhi for the Contemporary World: Celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Rajasthans free medicine scheme secures top rank
- Rajasthan’s free medicine scheme secured the highest position with first ranking issued by the National Health Mission (NHM) among the sixteen states of the country.
- NHM free drug service was introduced by the Ministry of health and family welfare (MoHFW) for all states/UTs.
- The main aim of Rajasthan Medical Services Corporation Limited (RMSCL) is to produce commonly used essential medicines freed from price to patients visiting government tending establishment in the year 2011-12.
- The scheme consists of 2 elements like free drugs and free tests.

Knight Frank ranks Delhi as the 10th fastest growing market globally
- Prime Global Cities Index of London based consultancy Knight Frank ranked Delhi as the 10th fastest growing prime market globally.
- The index is topped by Berlin(Germany) whereas Istanbul(Turkey) and Vancouver(Canada) were the weakest markets with rates minus 9.9% and minus 13.6% respectively.
- The Bengaluru (2.8%) and Mumbai (0.8%) ranked 15th and 30th on the list respectively.
‘Statue of Unity’, Mumbai’s Soho House among Time’s 100 greatest places in the world
- The 597-ft tall ‘Statue of Unity’ in Gujarat and Mumbai’s Soho House have been featured by the Time magazine in its second annual list of the 2019 World’s greatest places, in a compilation of 100 new and newly “noteworthy destinations.
- The ‘Statue of Unity’, the world’s tallest statue, is a tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, independent India’s first home minister as well as deputy prime minister.
- Soho House Mumbai is Asia’s first Soho House that puts a local spin on the “formula that has allowed Nick Jones’ members-only clubs to blossom across the US and Europe”.

- Mohun Bagan will take on Kerala Gokulam in the final of Durand Cup Football tournament today at 5 PM at VYBK ground in Kolkata.
- 16-time Durand Cup winner Mohan Bagan has reached final beating Real Kashmir 3-1 after 10 years whereas Gokulam Kerala has defeated East Bengal 3-2 in the semifinal.
India won Bronze in World Archery Youth Championships
- The Indian team of Sukhbeer Singh, Sangampreet Singh Bisla and Tushar Phadtare clinched a bronze medal in the junior compound men’s team event in the World Archery Youth Championships in Madrid, Spain.
- They defeat Colombia’s Jagdeep Teji Singh Mejia, Gomez Zuluaga Felipe and Toro Vasquez Manuel 234-231.

- Union Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani gave away the Poshan Abhiyaan Awards for the year 2018-19 in different categories at a function in New Delhi.
- Poshan Abhiyaan is a multi – ministerial convergence mission with the vision to address malnutrition with a targeted approach by 2022 across the country.
- The awards were given to the States, Districts, Blocks and Anganwadi Workers for their contributions in scaling up the Abhiyaan and ensuring that it reaches every household in the country.

NASA confirms Europa Clipper Mission
- National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), United States (US) space agency confirmed the next phase of development of the Europa Clipper Mission.
- It is an interplanetary mission to Jupiter’s smallest moon Europa with the target.
- It is conducting an in-depth exploration of Jupiter’s moon Europa whether the icy moon can have suitable conditions for sustaining life and increase our insights into astrobiology.
- The mission is managed by the Planetary Missions Program Office at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.Jupiter’s Galilean moon Europa consists of a huge ocean of liquid water beneath its icy shell.

- Senior BJP leader and Former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley passed away in New Delhi today. He was ailing for some time.
- former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley was a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
- Arun Jaitley was the Union Finance Minister in the Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance Government’s first term in power at the Centre. Besides finance, Jaitley previously held the defence, corporate affairs, commerce and industry and law and justice portfolios in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Narendra Modi Governments.
- Arun Jaitley has contributed in a major way to the BJP and the government for over two decades.
