GeM, SAIL ink pact to set up project management unit

  • Public procurement portal Government eMarketplace (GeM) and SAIL Thursday signed a pact to set up a project management unit (PMU).
  • GeM and Steel Authority of IndiaNSE -2.31 % (SAIL), signed an MoU (memorandum of understanding) to set up GeM Organizational Transformation Team.
  • With this MoU, SAIL has become the first public sector undertaking to establish GOTT PMU for transforming their procurement landscape and increasing their footprint on GeM.

  • 10th Jagran Film festival started at Siri Fort Auditorium in New Delhi.
  • The festival inaugurated by Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar.

Tamil Nadu to get two new Districts

  • Tamil Nadu to form two new district and the total number of districts in the state will be raised to 35.

Odisha to get first desalination plant

  • Odisha will get its first desalination plant in Paradip with a capacity of 10 million litres per day.
  • The proposed plant, to be built at a cost of around Rs 116 crore, is expected to be commissioned by 2021.
  • A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to implement the project was signed between the Paradip Port Trust (PPT) and the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), in Chennai.
  • saline water would be made potable for consumption in the PPT township through Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) process.

Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd: second-largest operator by subscriber base

  • According to the data from Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd has overtaken rival Bharti Airtel to become the second largest operator in terms of mobile subscriber base.
  • As of May end, Jio had 322.98 million users as against Airtel’s 320.38 million users.
  • Vodafone Idea continues in the top position with 387.55 million users.

India, Sri Lanka sign US 91.26 mn agreement to upgrade rail track located between Colombo and Jaffna

  • Sri Lankan government today signed an agreement with IRCON International for upgrading of a railway track with Indian concessional financing of around 91.26 million US dollars.
  • The aim of this agreement is to upgrade old track of 130 km located between Colombo and Jaffna in Tamil -majority Northern Province.
  • The contract agreement was signed by Sunil Kumar Choudhury, Chairman & Managing Director, IRCON International Limited, and L.P.Jayampathy, Secretary, Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation of Sri Lanka.
  • India has so far committed Line of Credit worth around 1.3 billion USD for development of railway sector in Sri Lanka.
  • India has so far upgraded around 300 km of railway track and provided modern signaling & tele communication system for around 330 km in Sri Lanka.

Union Health Ministry signs MoU to eradicate TB by 2025

BSE, Haryana govt sign pact to facilitate MSMEs raise capital

  • BSE has inked a pact with Haryana government to encourage and support state’s micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to raise capital.

  • Through BSE SME small companies can list and raise productive capital, gain visibility and credibility vis-a-vis large corporate.

Former athlete PT Usha nominated for IAAF’s Veteran Pin

  • PT Usha has been nominated for the International Association of Athletics Federation’s (IAAF) ‘Veteran Pin’ for her outstanding service to the sport.
  • Usha is often called the “queen of track and field”.
  • She won five gold medals — 100 metres(m), 200m, 400m, 400 m hurdles and the 4×400 m relay — besides a bronze in the Asian Games which were held at Jakarta in 1985.
  • Usha was the first Indian to reach the finals of the 400m hurdles.

Prominent Assamese Writer Purobi Bormudoi Dies

  • Assamese litterateur Purobi Bormudoi passed away at an age of 69.
  • She was awarded the Sahitya Akademi award in 2007 for her book ‘Shantanukulanandan’ and was also a recipient of the Assam Valley Literary award and Assam Sahitya Sabha’s Basanti Bordoloi Award.
  • Her prominent books include ‘Gajraj Prem aru Banditwa’, ‘Rupowali Noi, Sonowali Ghat’, ‘Bagshal, Baghjal aru Manuh’, ‘Porom Pujoniya aru Dukhar Upanyas’, ‘Eta Alibato Itikatha’ and ‘Saponor Ghar, Gharor Sapon’ among others.
  • The eminent writer had donated her eyes and pledged her body for medical research.
