Income Tax Department launches tool for Banks to ascertain TDS applicability rates on cash withdrawals

  • The Income Tax Department launched a new tool for the banks and post offices that will ensure tax deduction at source (TDS) on the cash withdrawals beyond the threshold.
  • With the help of the tool, post offices and banks will be able to ascertain the TDS applicability rates on the cash withdrawals of above Rs. 20 lakh in case a person is a non- filer of the income tax return and that of above Rs. 1 crore in case of a filer of Income-tax return.
  • On the cash withdrawal exceeding Rs. 20 lakhs, TDS will be deductible at the rate of 2% and it will be deductible at the rate of 5% if the amount exceeds 1 Crore, in case the person withdrawing is a non- filer of the income tax return.

  • India’s special drawing rights with the International Monetary Fund rose by 5 million dollars to reach 1.453 billion dollars, while the country’s reserve position also increased by 19 million dollars to 4.545 billion dollars.

  • Maharashtra government has initiated a measure “HEALTHCARE SERVICE AT YOUR DOORSTEP” in Nashik.
  • The initiative taken by the state’s public health department and district administration to deploy 556 squads in predominantly tribal villages of Nashik is yielding positive results in containing the spread of Covid-19.
  • Nashik which has 15 talukas has been affected due to the virus which has wreaked havoc in other parts of the state as well.
  • There are around 2,279 active cases in the district as of today. “Healthcare service at your doorstep” is a unique concept as it comprises medical officers, health workers, ASHA workers and a social activist who visit patients directly at their residence.

Odisha’s Madhu Babu Pension Scheme now include Transgenders

  • Odisha Government announced that transgenders are to be included under Madhu Babu Pension Yojana.
  • In order to avail the benefits of the scheme, the transgenders should have a certificate issued under Section 6 of Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019.
  • Also, the income of the beneficiary should not be exceeding Rs 40,000 per year.

Madhu Babu Pension Yojana

  • The scheme was launched in the state of Odisha in 2008.
  • It is a merger of two pension schemes namely Revised Old Age Pension Rules, 1989 and Disability Pension Rules, 1985.
  • Under the scheme, the state government will provide pension to the state beneficiaries.
  • This includes persons with disabilities, widows and now transgenders have been included.
  • Madhu Babu Pension Yojana is a social security scheme that was launched in the state of Odisha.
  • Under the scheme, around 5,000 transgenders are to receive Rs 500, Rs 700 and Rs 900 per month as pension.
  • The women currently fighting in divorce cases are also to be brought under the scheme.

An agreement signed by China and Pakistan for “Azad Pattan Hydel Power Project”

  • Pakistan and China have signed an agreement for the construction of the Azad Pattan Hydel Power Project.
  • Prime Minister Imran Khan signed the agreement with China’s Gezhouba for the Azad Pattan Hydropower Project at a ceremony in Islamabad.
  • The 700 MW Azad Pattan hydel power project will be on the Jhelum river in Sudhoti district of Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK).
  • Objective: to enable the country to move towards cheaper and greener power while generating local job opportunities.
  • The project is expected to be completed in 2026.
  • The $1.5-billion project is the second power project under the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
  • The first agreement, for the 1,100 MW Kohala project, was signed on June 23.
  • That project, worth $2.3 billion, too will come upon the Jhelum near Muzaffarabad.
  • The Azad Pattan Hydropower Project is a 700 MW hydroelectric power station on the Jhelum River roughly 7 km upstream of Azad Pattan Bridge in the Sudhanoti District, PoK and 90 km from Islamabad, the capital city of Pakistan.

  • India is the third top-most country among 48 nations, in the 2020 Global Manufacturing Risk Index (MRI), for having the most-suitable locations for global manufacturing in terms of cost competitiveness and operating conditions.

Highlights:

  • The annual Global Manufacturing Risk Index (MRI) report was released by the US-based property consultant Cushman & Wakefield, to rank the most suitable locations for global manufacturing among 48 countries in Europe, Americas, and the Asia-Pacific.
  • China and the United States retain the top two positions respectively in MRI 2020, while India has moved one place higher from previous edition of the report, to rank third in MRI 2020.
  • Each of the country has been assessed in four key areas: Bounce back ability, Conditions, Costs and Risks
  • The MRI 2020 report also includes analysis of the impact of Covid-19 on the global manufacturing sector and the ability of the countries to restart their manufacturing sectors once confinement measures are relaxed and business starts to return to normal.

India signs MoU with US to store strategic reserves of petroleum

  • On July, 17, 2020, India and United States signed Memorandum of Understanding to begin discussions on storing petroleum reserves in the US soil.
  • A virtual US-India Strategic Energy Partnership Ministerial was held between the Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Shri Dharmendra Pradhan and Energy Secretary of US Dan Brouillette.
  • The countries signed Memorandum of Understanding to begin discussions on cooperation and maintenance of strategic petroleum reserves.
  • This includes exchange of information and best practices as well.
  • US-India Strategic Energy Partnership works to support sustainable energy development. Under this, the countries collaborate on smart grids, renewable energy, clean energy and unconventional sources of energy.
  • Under the partnership, India-US has increased their hydrocarbon trade in the last three years.
  • The bilateral hydrocarbon trade was 9.2 billion USD between 2019-20.
  • India and US are currently working on carbon capture, utilization and storage.

  • The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has announced the recipients of the International Press Freedom Awards 2020.

Shahidul Alam from Bangladesh

  • Shahidul Alam is a photojournalist and commenter. He is the founder of the Pathshala Media Institute and the Drik photo library. He was in jail for 102 days and was released in November 2018.

Mohammad Mosaed from Iran

  • Mohammad Mosaed is a freelance economic reporter. He was forced to resign from a reformist newspaper under government pressure as he publishes news on social media platforms.

 Dapo Olorunyomi from Nigeria

  • He is the co-founder, CEO, and publisher of the Nigerian newspaper Premium Times. He was twice arrested before hiding in 1995 and was arrested with a colleague during a police raid on his newspaper on a defamation charge in 2017.

  • The potential vaccine targets the spike domain of the Virus to generate an immune response that could block the viral invasion.
  • The multi-epitope-based vaccine candidate was developed by stitching the desired peptides to produce the protein.
