  • On this day, the British Indian Army troops under the command of Colonel Reginald Dyer fired rifles into a crowd of Indians in Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar, Punjab.
  • The civilians had assembled for a peaceful protest to condemn the arrest and deportation of two national leaders, Satya Pal, Saifuddin Kitchlew and the Rowlatt Act. General Dyer took a strike force of 50 rifles and 40 khukri-wielding Gurkhas into the enclosed ground, Jallianwala Bagh. BRO opened Srinagar-Leh highway to allow essential commodities

  • Border Roads Organisation (BRO) opened the strategic Srinagar-Leh highway on 11 April. The highway connects Ladakh with the rest of the world.
  • Earlier, few oil tankers and other essential commodities were allowed to move towards Leh/Ladakh from Zojila pass.

Why was Srinagar-Leh highway closed?

  • The 425 km Srinagar-Leh highway was closed since the month of December 2019 due to heavy snowfall at Zojila pass.
  • As per the directions from Divisional Commissioner Ladakh, there was an emergent need for stockpiling essential commodities in the Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh.
  • Snowfall in the year 2020 broke the record of the last six decades.
  • The Project Beacon and Project Vijayak operation cleared fresh snow around Zojila were cleared at the height of 11,500 feet and made the road motorable.
  • The snow clearance operations were undertaken by project Beacon of BRO from Gagangir to zero point and the same was done by project Vijayak from Drass towards zero point.

Amid lockdown 85 lakh PMUY beneficiaries received LPG cylinder in April

  • Government of India has announced pro-poor initiatives under Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana (PMGKY).
  • The move by GoI comes as an economic response to nationwide lockdown due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Aim:

  • The move is aimed to alleviate the hardships faced by the poor due to economic disruption by Coronavirus.

Highlights:

  • As per the scheme, free Liquefied petroleum gas Refills will be provided to Ujjwala beneficiaries over the period of 3 months, that is, from April-June 2020.
  • So far, Oil Marketing Companies have transferred Rs.5,606 crore into 7.15 crore Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiary accounts for availing free delivery of LPG cylinder under the PMGKY.
  • 26 crore cylinders have been booked in April by the beneficiaries, out of which about 85 lakh cylinders have been delivered to PMUY beneficiaries.
  • A total of over 27.87 crore active LPG consumers are there in the country, with the PMUY beneficiaries accounting for over 8 crore. Due to the lockdown, 50 to 60 lakh cylinders are being delivered daily in the country. When there is nationwide lockdown and the people are staying home to stay safe, LPG delivery boys and all those in the supply chain of LPG are working tirelessly to ensure that clean fuel reaches people directly at their homes.
  • Oil marketing majors namely IOCL, BPCL, and HPCL have announced an ex-gratia amount as a one-time special measure of Rs.5 lakh each in the unfortunate case of demise of personnel like Mechanics and Delivery boys, attending duty in the LPG distributorship chain, Show-room Staff, Godown-keepers, due to COVID-19 infection.

UNIDO signs MoU with Consumer Unity Trust Society to counter economic impact of COVD-19

  • United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN), has inked an memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Consumer Unity and Trust Society (CUTS), a non-profit organisation based in Jaipur, Rajasthan, to promote consumers to contribute to the global development agenda as well as support their respective governments in times of global crisis like coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Highlights:

  • Tha MoU, valid for 5 years, aims to create a joint technical co-operation initiatives to support ongoing activities in achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal (SDG).
  • As per the MoU, CUTS will support e-commerce as a platform to accelerate Member States’ transition to the digital economy and adapt to the 4th Industrial Revolution.

  • Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) approved the bioassay laboratory of the Department of Biotechnology’s (DBT) Faridabad-based Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI) as an extension of diagnostic facility of Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Medical College and Hospital.

Highlights:

  • A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in this regard was signed to provide the team at the bioassay laboratory to train manpower and build capacity at the ESI hospital for COVID-19 testing. This MoU was signed after the approval of the ICMR.
  • DBT will undertake an expansion process to initiate testing facilities. For this, DBT has engaged government laboratories that were not under ICMR. This includes laboratories of DBT, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), and government-funded medical colleges, among others.

Testing patient samples:

  • CCMB has been authorized to conduct SARS-CoV-2 virus testing and receives patient samples from government hospitals across 33 districts of Telangana. It tests around 350 samples per day.

Training on COVID-19 Testing:

  • CCMB has also trained 25 medical doctors, technical staff and students from five government hospitals namely NIMS, Integrated Programme in Management (IPM), Government Fever Hospital in Hyderabad and Kakatiya Medical College, Warangal. The trained people are deployed for the testing activities at their respective hospitals.
  • CSIR-CCMB has also created training videos on best practices for handling patient samples and on RT-PCR. These videos are available for authorized centers and can be got by contacting [email protected]

Sequencing of the SARS-CoV-2 genome:

  • CSIR labs are leading the way in genome sequencing of the Corona Virus and CCMB is performing Next Generation Sequencing and analysis to map out the whole genome sequence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The patient samples with CCMB that show high viral load is chosen for genome analyses. CCMB has sequenced a few patient viral isolates and aims to sequence several hundred virus isolates in the next 3-4 weeks.

Culturing SARS-CoV-2 Virus for Testing Repurposed & New Drugs:

  • A key tool lacking for the R&D community is the lack of viral cultures to test repurposed drugs, or new drugs or new molecules predicted by various molecular modelling. CSIR-CCMB has been engaged in this task and is setting up a system for culturing the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the Vero cell line which is permissive for the growth of viruses. It is hoped to be ready soon.

Provide advisories on COVID-19 Outbreak:

  • CCMB has actively engaged in conveying various precautions and advisories on Corona Outbreak by innovative means in regional languages on social media platforms to the public at large.

IIT-Ropar develops UV germicidal irradiation technology-based device to sanitize grocery items, currency notes

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT-Ropar) has developed a trunk-shaped device fitted with ultraviolet (UV) germicidal irradiation technology.
  • The device aims to aid the fight against COVID-19.

UV germicidal irradiation technology:

  • The device should be placed at doorsteps and all items brought from outside including grocery and currency notes must be put in it to sanitize them.
  • The trunk will cost around or less than Rs.500.
  • It will take 30 minutes for the device to sanitize the items. After sanitizing the items should be kept inside for a 10 minutes cooling-off period before one takes the items out.
  • The device is based on UV germicidal irradiation technology which is used in water purifiers. People are advised not to look directly at the light inside the trunk as it can be harmful.

  • Google and Apple collaborate to fight against COVID-19 through contact tracing technology.
  • Both tech-giants have collaborated to enable the use of Bluetooth technology to help governments and health agencies reduce the spread of the Corona Virus, with user privacy and security central to the design.
  • Google and Apple will be launching a comprehensive solution that includes application programming interfaces (APIs) and operating system-level technology to assist in enabling contact tracing.
