Interesting Facts About Sushma Swaraj: Sushma swaraj (14 February 1952 – 6 August 2019) was an Indian politician ,former External Affairs Minister and a Supreme Court lawyer. A senior leader of Bharatiya Janata Party, Swaraj served as the Minister of External Affairs of India in the first Narendra Modi government (2014 – 2019). At the age of 25, she became the youngest cabinet minister of Indian state of Haryana. She also served as 5th Chief Minister of Delhi for a short duration in 1998. Daughter of Hardev Sharma and Shrimati Laxmi Devi and Wife of Swaraj Kaushal.

  • Completed her graduation in B.A with Political Science and Sanskrit as major Subjects from the S.D College of Ambala Cantonment, Haryana.
  • She did a degree course in LL.B. from the Department of Laws of the Punjab University at Chandigarh.
  • 1970- She received the Best Student Award from S.D. College.
  • The best Cadet ofN.C.C .of the S.D college for three Consecutive Years.

Her Career:

  • 1973- Started practice as an advocate in the Supreme court of India.
  • Started with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad in the 1970s, she turned out to be an integral part of George Fernandes’s legal defense team during 1975.
  • She actively participated in Jayaprakash Narayanan’s Total Revolution Movement.
  • She joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and became a national leader of the BJP.

 Achievements:

  • In 1977, at the age of 25 years, She became the youngest Cabinet Minister in India
  • In 1979, at the age of 27, she became the Janata party’s State President in Haryana
  • She holds record of becoming the first woman spokesperson of a national-level political party.
  • She holds credit of becoming the first Woman Chief Minister Of Delhi and also the first woman Union Cabinet Minister.
  • Served as a member of Parliament for Seven times.
  • The Firstwomen Leader Of Opposition.
  • Second woman to take charge of the foreign ministry after Indira Gandhi.
  • Information and Broadcasting Minister in the 13-day Atal Bihari Vajpayee government in 1996 .
  • Swaraj also held the portfolios of Telecommunication,Health and Family Welfare, and Parliamentary Affairs in the Union Cabinet.
  • During her tenure as the external affairs minister, she handled several strategically-sensitive issues, including Indo-Pak and Sino-India relations(china & india ).
  • Her role in resolving the prickly Doklam standoff between the Indian and Chinese sides will be remembered.
  • India’s joining of the SCO was a key achievement during her tenure.

Awards:

  • Best Speaker Award by the Haryana state Assembly
  • Best parliamentarian Award twice in 2008 and 2010. She is the first ever and only women MP to receive the outstanding parliamentarian award.
  • Conferred with “Grand Cross of Order of Civil Merit” award in Spain.
