Hello and welcome to exampundit. To prepare for Bank PO PRELIMS you need to be smart enough to manage your short time duration and select your scoring zone. Today we are sharing all the important tips on How to Score Maximum in Quantitative Aptitude.
How to Score Maximum in Quantitative Aptitude
MAIN TOPICS
-
DATA INTERPRETATION
If you want to know How to Score Maximum in Quantitative Aptitude then DI is the most important and Scoring section in quantitative aptitude of bank exams.
Most common and important pattern are line diagram, bar diagram, pie chart, statement Di ,spiral Di, triangular Di, Missing Data Di.
To score highly in this section you need to practice a lot so that you can solve calculations mentally. To understand the problem of the Di, concepts on Average, Percentage, Ratio, Profit & Loss, Income & Expenditures, Growth & Population etc. must be clear. You can expect 10-15 questions from Di & an ordinary student can fetch 10-12 marks easily by proper preparation.
So you first solve all the DI and secure some safe marks.
-
SIMPLIFICATION
This is another scoring segment where you need to be strong in basic calculation. By lots of practice you can learn how to round off or simplify a value so that we can calculate easily.
You must practice a mix of problems on BODMAS Rule, Approximations, Square & Cubes, Surds & Indices, Decimals and Percentages, multiplications of high values .You can expect 5 questions from this section.
-
NUMBER SERIES
Generally 5 questions are asked on this topic. Either You need to find a specific term or You need to find the wrong term in the series. To catch the logic of the series you need to practice every possible types of Number Series so that you can easily understand the logic of the series. Out of five, 2-3 questions can easily be solved and relatively tougher question should be left aside without wasting your time.
-
QUADRATIC EQUATION
It is also very scoring & easier section in Quant. you can score 5 marks within 5 minutes. To do well in this section you must practice lots of Middle Term factors and build a proper concept on Inequality from any standard textbook.
-
ARITHMETIC & MENSURATION
It is better to attempt this segment only after finishing the above mentioned segments in time.
Important chapters are:
- Profit & loss
- Compound & simple interest
- Speed & distance
- Pipe & cisterns
- Work & efficiency
- Age related problem
- Problems on percentage
- Mixtures & alligation
- Probability based on permutation & combination
- Cylinders, cone, sphere
- Boat & Stream
Apart from these chapters you must study some basic algebra formulas, basic geometry concepts etc.
These are the various chapters you need to practice thoroughly but my suggestion is first attempt DI, Simplification, quadratic, numbers series & only after that you have some excess time then go for words problem.
-
DATA SUFFICIENCY
This is less important for preliminary exams & still you can practice few three statements data sufficiency problems.
TIME FOR PREPARATION
All candidates at least give THREE hours daily on all chapters with special focus on data interpretation. You must give at least 10-15 full length mock tests from any standard website. Those who are weak in mathematics need to give four to five hours in daily basis with sufficient mock tests. Those who are working need to give one to two hours daily.
Only regular practice can enhance your speed to solve calculation quickly. Try to solve as much as calculation mentally so that you can save times in exam hall.
For all aspirants
3 Hours – Daily – All Chapters with special focus on DI
- Data Interpretation – 1 hour
- Word Problems, Series, Approximations – 1 hour
- Quadratic Equations and revise – 1 hour
For weak candidates
4-5 Hours – Daily – All chapters along with Mock Tests (2 mocks)
- 2 hours – Data Interpretation
- 2 hours – Rest of the chapters
- 1 hours – Mock Test
For working aspirants
1-2 hours – Daily – All chapters and 1 mock every 3rd day
- 1 hour – Data Interpretation
- 1 hour – Other chapters
- On 3rd Day, 1 hour revision and 1 mock
TIPS & STRATEGIES
Don’t try to memorize all short cut rules for each kind of problem. Try to clear basic concepts on every chapters. Note down only the important laws and formulas and apply those in home.
Formulas of percentage are very useful. If you can remember % values of few fraction it can save lots of time in DI.As example –
⅛=0.125 ; 1/7=0.1428 so when we will find those values like 12.5% or 14.28% we can substitute those with ⅛ or 1/7 etc and calculation will be easier.
Apart from that you should remember squares of up to 30 and Cubes of upto 20.
You must learn rules for finding squares and square root & cubes and cube root so that you can solve simplification quickly.
In case of number series if you are unable to understand the logic within 40-45 second just left it and jump to next question.
In DI you may find some question which are almost impossible to solve in short time. You need to identify that very fast and avoid the question without wasting any time.
In quadratic equation if you are unable to find any factors, Vanishing factors or Shreedharacharya laws may be used.
In case of simplification problem don’t get puzzled if you found big values rather be cool and try to find the clues which is needed to solve the problem.
You must practice probabilities mainly based on combination & permutation. 2-3 question of this type generally comes in prelim.
Finally best of luck to all those who are starting their preparation. The way cutoffs are increasing day by day you need to attempt at least 65-70 question in total and in Quant you should attempt 22-25 questions with good accuracy.
As almost 70 days left for exam practice regularly with full integration and cover your weak areas.
The entire How to Score Maximum in Quantitative Aptitude article is prepared by a Bank PO(2015).
All the best!!
