1). 28th May- Menstrual Hygiene Day

  • The MH Day seeks to break the silence, raise awareness and change the negative social norms surrounding menstrual hygiene.
  • Theme of this year’s Menstrual Hygiene Day is ‘It’s Time for Action!’
  • The day aims to ensure no girl is left behind.

2). V D Savarkar’s birth anniversary being celebrated today

  • SwatantryaveerVinayakDamodarSavarkar’s birth anniversary is being celebrated today.
  • Born on this day in 1883 near Nasik in Maharashtra, Savarkar was popularly called Veer Savarkar.
  • Prime Minister paid tributes to V D Savarkar on his Jayanti.

3). BIMSTEC leaders invited to PM designate Modi’s oath-taking ceremony

  • India has invited the leaders of the BIMSTEC Member States for the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister NarendraModi on Thursday evening.
  • Ministry of External Affairs, MEA said that invitations have also been sent to the President of Kyrgyzstan SooronbayJeenbekov who is the current Chair of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and Mauritius Prime Minister PravindJugnauth, the Chief Guest at this year’s PravasiBhartiya Divas.
  • Government’s focus on its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy.

4). UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Orchha Town of Madhya Pradesh added to Tentative List

  • The Orchha town of Madhya Pradesh has been included in tentative list of the World Heritage Sites of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). The move came after the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) sent a proposal in this regard to the UNESCO on April 15, 2019.

  • Situated on the banks of the river Betwa, Orchha is located in Niwari district of Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh.
  • The site is around 80 km far from Madhya Pradesh’s Tikamgarh district and 15 km from Jhansi of Uttar Pradesh.
  • The town is celebrated for its rich and ancient architecture of Chaturbhuj Temple, Orchha Fort Complex, and Raja Mahal among others.
  • The UNESCO World Heritage Committee is composed of 21 UNESCO member states, elected by the General Assembly.

5). First all-women IAF crew fly Mi-17 V5 helicopter

  • Three women Indian Air Force officers were part of the country’s first all-women crew to fly a medium-lift helicopter.
  • ‘All women crew’ flew the helicopter for a Battle Inoculation Training mission taking off and landing from restricted areas at a forward airbase in South Western Air Command.

6). India elected to Executive Board of first UN-Habitat Assembly

  • India has been elected to the Executive Board of the first UN-Habitat Assembly. Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in a tweet said the nation’s global clout continues to grow significantly.

7). Maldives ex-president Nasheed nominated as new Speaker

  • In Maldives, former President Mohamed Nasheed has been nominated as speaker of new parliament or Majlis which will hold its first sitting today.

8). Russia launches new nuclear-powered icebreaker in bid to open up Arctic

  • Russia launched a nuclear-powered icebreaker, part of an ambitious programme to renew and expand its fleet of the vessels in order to improve its ability to tap the Arctic’s commercial potential.
  • The ship, dubbed the Ural and which was floated out from a dockyard in St Petersburg, is one of a trio that when completed will be the largest and most powerful icebreakers in the world.
  • The Ural is due to be handed over to Russia’s state-owned nuclear energy corporation Rosatom in 2022 after the two other icebreakers in the same series, Arktika (Arctic) and Sibir (Siberia), enter service.

9). Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz ousted in no-confidence vote

  • Austrian Parliament has removed Chancellor Sebastian Kurz from office as he lost the no confidence in a special Parliamentary session
  • Austria’s President Alexander Van der Bellen named Vice Chancellor HartwigLöger as the interim leader. Löger will serve until a new transitional government can be appointed ahead of elections expected in September.

10). Indian Overseas Bank launches ‘Bank on Wheels’ facility

  • Indian Overseas Bank (IOB), on Monday, announced that it has launched ‘Bank on Wheels’ facility in 14 of its lead districts in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, besides Vijayawada.
  • The bank said the mobile van facility will enable the public, especially senior citizens, conveniently get door-step banking facility available at identified locations of the lead districts.
  • A dedicated banking correspondent will accompany the vehicle with a micro ATM inside the van to take care of services such as account opening, enrolment of customers in Social Security Scheme, passbook printing, and other financial inclusion activities.

11). Facebook plans to launch ‘GlobalCoin’ cryptocurrency in 2020

  • Facebook is planning to launch its own cryptocurrency in early 2020, allowing users to make digital payments in a dozen countries.
  • The currency, dubbed GlobalCoin, would enable Facebook’s 2.4 billion monthly users to change dollars and other international currencies into its digital coins.
  • The coins could then be used to buy things on the internet and in shops and other outlets, or to transfer money without needing a bank account.

12). DRDO successfully test fires new version of Akash air defence missile

  • DRDO on Monday successfully test fired the new version of theAkash surface to air defence missile system with a new indigenously- developed seeker.
  • The missile was test-fired in Balasore off the Odisha coast.

  • The supersonic Akash missile has a range of around 25 km and up to the altitude of 18,000m.

13). ISSF World Cup: Saurabh Chaudhary wins 10m Air Pistol gold

  • In ISSF shooting World Cup, in Munich Germany, India’s Saurabh Chaudhary has won 10m Air Pistol Gold beating his own World Record.
  • The 17-year old Chaudhary scored 246.3 bettering his previous best of 245 points that was set in New Delhi World Cup Shooting in February this year

14). Action Choreographer- filmmaker VeeruDevgan passes away

  • Bollywood’s most famous stunt and action choreographer, VeeruDevgan passes away in Mumbai.
  • He was 85. Mr Devgan was the father of actor Ajay Devgn.
