India’s textile and fashion heritage became part of Google project We
Wear Culture

  • India’s textile and fashion
    heritage on 8 June 2017 became the part of Google project ‘We Wear Culture’.
  • A large part of a culture is
    defined by what is worn by its people and in India, there is a vast and varied
    spectrum of cultures and clothes. Such vast fashion heritage of India can now
    be explored through Google’s latest virtual exhibition project We Wear Culture.
  • Working with 183 renowned
    cultural institutions from around the world including India, Google’s project
    ‘We Wear Culture’ explores the history of clothes dating as early as 3000 years
    ago from the ancient Silk Road to the unmatched elegance of the Indian Saree.
  • The online project includes
    collections from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS) and
    varied weaves from across India from Gharchola to Patola to Temple to Ikat
    sarees, as it traces the story and importance of Indian textiles from ancient
    sculptures.
  • It also showcases designs from
    north-eastern India including the weaves of tribes such as the Nagas, Meitis
    and the traditional attire from Meghalaya called ‘Dhara’ or ‘Nara’ worn by the
    Khasi women.
Sulekha ties up with Axis Bank to enable more visibility to its SMB

  • India’s largest and
    fastest-growing digital platforms for local service Sulekha on Thursday
    announced its strategic partnership with Axis Bank to provide the bank’s SMB
    and SME customers special access to Sulekha’s local services marketplace.
  • This partnership between third
    largest private sector bank, Axis and
  • Sulekha will enable the Axis
    Bank’s SMB and SME customers to be visible to more than 20 million users on
    Sulekha, every month.
  • Having more than 5.5 million
    listed businesses, Sulekha’s services marketplace is growing at a scorching
    speed with over a million needs being registered every month and the idea of
    this tie-up was to get Axis Bank customers fast access to this opportunity.
  • This is the first of many such
    tie-ups Sulekha is planning to cement its leadership position in the local
    service landscape.
Dena Bank ties up with Maruti for vehicle financing

  • State-owned Dena Bank has tied up
    with Maruti Suzuki India for retail financing of vehicles in personal as well
    as commercial segments.
  • Ramesh Singh, Executive Director
    of Dena Bank, said the bank envisioned a sustainable growth in auto loan
    segment with this tie-up and recent introduction of dealers pay out scheme.
  • Maruti Suzuki, a leading
    automobile manufacturer in Friday’s trading session achieved a milestone of
    touching Rs 7000 share price for the first time ever. The stock has extended
    gains of 33% so far in 2017. The investors are buying the stock on hopes of
    sustainable strong sales.

Jet Airways inks MoU with Aeromexico for codeshare flights

  • Naresh Goyal-promoted private
    carrier Jet Airways on Thursday said, it has collaborated with Mexican flag
    carrier Aeromexico for codeshare flights and frequent flyers programme.
  • The two airlines have signed a
    memorandum of understanding (MoU) to give effect to the partnership, Jet Airways
    said in a release here.
  • The MoU, signed by Jet Airways
    Chairman Naresh Goyal and Aeromexico Chief Executive Officer Andres Conesa on
    the sidelines of the IATA Annual General Meeting in Cancun (Mexico), outlines
    cooperation in the areas of enabling codeshare flights and frequent flyer
    programmes, it said.
  • As part of the arrangement, both
    carriers will code on each other’s services between India and Mexico via common
    gates in Europe (London Heathrow, Paris Charles De Gaulle and Amsterdam).
Cabinet approves MoU on standards inked with Mali

  • The Cabinet today gave ex-post
    facto approval to a memorandum of understanding (MoU) inked between Bureau of
    Indian Standards and Mali’s Direction Nationale De Industries.
  • The pact was signed on
    standardisation and conformity assessment of goods.
  • “The MoU aims to facilitate
    closer cooperation and provide a mechanism by which India and Mali can work
    together towards the common aim of strengthening standardisation and conformity
    assessment activities in order to facilitate sharing of expertise and mutual
    trade,” an official statement said.
  • Mali is a landlocked country in
    West Africa.

Health Secretary inaugurates ‘Vatsalya – Maatri Amrit Kosh’, a National
Human Milk Bank and Lactation Counselling Centre

  • CK Mishra, Secretary Health and
    Family Welfare, on 7 June 2017 inaugurated the ‘Vatsalya – Maatri Amrit Kosh’,
    a National Human Milk Bank and Lactation Counselling Centre at the Lady
    Hardinge Medical College (LHMC), New Delhi.
  • The Vatsalya – Maatri Amrit Kosh will
    be the largest milk bank and lactation counselling centre available in the
    North India.
  • The initiative “Vatsalya – Maatri
    Amrit Kosh” is an initiative of the LHMC and was established in collaboration
    with the Norwegian government, Oslo University and Norway-India Partnership
    Initiative (NIPI).
  • After inaugurating the centre,
    the Health Secretary added that it is envisaged that with this donor human milk
    bank, all newborns in and around Delhi will have access to life-saving human
    milk regardless of the circumstances of their birth.
  • “Vatsalya – Maatri Amrit Kosh”
    opened at Lady Hardinge Medical College in collaboration with the Norwegian
    government, Oslo University and NIPI Newborn Project, is a national human milk
    bank and lactation counselling centre.
  • It will collect, pasteurise, test
    and safely store milk that has been donated by lactating mothers and makes it
    available for infants in need.

Union Health Minister conferred WHO Director-General’s special
recognition award

  • J P Nadda, the Union Minister of
    Health and Family Welfare was conferred the WHO Director-General’s Special
    Recognition Award for global tobacco control on 8 June 2017.
  • The global recognition award was
    presented to him by Poonam Khetrapal Singh, the Regional Director of WHO’s
    South-East Asia division at the ‘National Consultation on Accelerating
    Implementation of WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) for the
    achievement of SDGs’.
  • Also present at the occasion were
    Ministers of State for Health & Family Welfare, Faggan Singh Kulaste and
    Anupriya Patel.
  • Speaking on the occasion, J P
    Nadda said that the award recognises the collective endeavour of the Ministry,
    members of NGO, social activists, civil society organizations and many more who
    in their own ways contributed to the cause across the country.
  • Nadda said that Tobacco, a prime
    driver of poverty, has been rightly identified as a development issue. In
    India, tobacco users have reduced by 81 lakhs and youth consumption of tobacco
    has also seen a marked decrease.
Resignations
Nepal’s first woman Chief Justice Sushila Karki retires

  • First woman Chief Justice of
    Nepal Sushila Karki retired on 8 June 2017 after attaining the age 65 years.
    She was appointed as the Chief Justice of Nepal Supreme Court on 10 July 2016.
    She was 25th Chief Justice of Nepal Supreme Court.
  • Justice Karki was succeeded by
    Justice Gopal Parajuli, who is now the senior most judge of the Supreme Court
    of Nepal.
Sam Pitroda resigns as Technical Advisor to Odisha Government

  • Prominent telecom engineer and
    policymaker Sam Pitroda on 7 June 2017 resigned as the Technical Advisor to the
    Odisha Government. Pitroda’s resignation was accepted by Chief Minister Naveen
    Patnaik.
  • His position as technical advisor
    to the state government was that of the status of a cabinet rank minister.
    However, he did not avail any facilities and took a token salary of Re 1 a
    month.
  • Pitroda’s resignation was
    demanded by opposition party BJP after he was named as the Chairman of Congress
    Overseas Cell.

World Oceans Day 2017 observed globally

  • The World Oceans Day was observed
    across the world on 8 June 2017 with the theme Our oceans, our future. This
    year’s theme is connected to the Ocean Conference which took place from 5 to 9
    June at United Nations headquarters in New York.
  • The concept of a World Oceans Day
    was first proposed in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro as a way to
    celebrate world’s shared oceans as well as to raise awareness about the crucial
    role the ocean plays in our lives and the important ways people can help
    protect it.
  • Following this, the UN General
    Assembly (UNGA) on 5 December 2008 designated 8 June as the World Oceans Day
    through its resolution.
