Current Affairs Update – 7th May, 2016

• NMDC Limited has signed a
  memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ISRO’s National Remote Sensing Centre on
  Thursday, opening up possibilities for use of satellite technology for mineral
  exploration and other related ventures.
• With this, NMDC will be the first
  company under the Ministry of Steel to use satellite-based geological mapping.
• Under the MoU, NMDC will
  establish a Remote Sensing and GIS Laboratory at its head office in Hyderabad
  for interpretation of satellite data, an official statement from NMDC said.

• Union inter-ministerial Board of
  Approval (BoA) on 28 April 2016 approved the proposal of Infosys to set up an
  IT/ITeS special economic zone (SEZ) in Bengaluru in an area spread over 4
  hectares.

• The Board decided to grant formal
  approval to the proposal as the Infosys possesses the land by itself. It also
  extended the time limit to nearly around 20 developers to complete their
  projects.
• The developers who got the time
  extension include Mayar Infrastructure Development for a biotechnology SEZ in
  Haryana, Wipro for IT SEZ in Karnataka and Vedanta for its sector-specific SEZ
  for manufacturing and exports of aluminium in Odisha.

• Thrissur-based South Indian Bank
  has announced a tie-up with National Australian Bank (NAB) for online inward
  remittances from Australia at a competitive rate.
• The arrangement enables faster,
  hassle-free remittances through internet at the best exchange rates, claimed
  the Bank. NAB will be South Indian Bank’s main banking correspondent in
  Australia.

• Former CBDT chief Anita Kapur was
  today appointed as member of Competition Appellate Tribunal (COMPAT).
• Kapur has been appointed to the
  post till she attains the age of 65 years, an order issued by Department of
  Personnel and Training said.
• COMPAT is a statutory
  organisation to hear and dispose of appeals against any order passed by
  fair-trade regulator Competition Commission of India.

• Chennai-born Raja Rajeswari has
  been sworn-in as a criminal court judge in New York by Mayor Bill de Blasio,
  becoming the first India-born woman to be appointed a judge in New York City.
• Ms. Rajeswari, 43, who had
  migrated to the U.S. from Chennai as a teenager, previously worked with the
  Richmond County District Attorney’s Office for her entire career in several
  bureaus including Criminal Court, Narcotics, Supreme Court, and the Sex Crimes
  Special Victims Bureau, where she last served as Deputy Chief.
• Ms. Rajeswari took the oath of
  office at a ceremony in New York City on Monday along with 27 other judges
  appointed earlier this month to the Family Court, Criminal Court, and Civil
  Court, which are part of the New York State Unified Court System.
• The mayor appoints judges to
  10-year terms in the New York City Criminal Court and the Family Court within
  the city.

• Taoiseach Enda Kenny was
  re-elected as Prime Minister of Ireland on 6 May 2016. Kenny, leader of Fine
  Gael party, was elected for the post 70 days after a general election which had
  produced no outright winner.
• He was re-appointed with 59 votes
  in favour and 49 votes against.
• His Gael party won the most seats
  in the election but fell short of the quota needed to rule without support.
  This means that Kenny will lead a minority Fine Gael government.

• In the run-up to the Under-17
  World Cup set to be hosted in the country next year, India and Japan on Friday
  decided to exchange sportspersons, coaches, experts and administrators to
  improve the standard of the game in both nations.
• It was also decided that the two
  countries will play some friendly matches ahead of the tournament. The
  decisions were taken during a meeting between Sports Minister Sarbananda
  Sonowal and a 12-member delegation from Japan led by Hase Hiroshi, Minister of
  Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
• The goal is to spread values learned
  through sports and increase awareness of the Olympic and Paralympic movement.

• Defending Champion Pakistan on 6
  May 2016 won the Asian Kabaddi Championship 2016 (Circle Style) that held at
  Wah Cantonment in Pakistan. It defeated India by 19 points.
• Pakistan achieved 50 points
  against 31 by India in the final of the tournament. It is second successive win
  for Pakistan in the Asian Kabaddi title as they won it in 2012.

• Indonesia, Malaysia and the
  Philippines on 5 May 2016 agreed to conduct coordinated sea patrols and
  establish a hotline to combat piracy and kidnappings in waters bordering the
  three nations.
• The countries’ foreign ministers
  and military officials reached an agreement in the Indonesian city of
  Yogyakarta. The meeting was prompted by the recent kidnapping of 10 Indonesian
  sailors in the southwestern Philippines by Abu Sayyaf. However, the sailors
  were released on 1 May 2016.
