Mauritius regains top
slot as source of FDI in India

  • Mauritius has regained the position as top source of foreign
    direct investment (FDI) into India by pushing Singapore to the second slot in
    2014-15.
  • Mauritius accounted for about 29 per cent of the country’s
    total FDI inflows last fiscal. In 2013-14, Singapore had replaced Mauritius as
    the top source of FDI into India.
  • India attracted USD 9.03 billion in FDI from Mauritius in
    2014-15, whereas it was USD 6.74 billion from Singapore, according to the data
    of the Department of the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP).
  • According to experts, the benefits under tax treaty and
    deferment of General Anti-Avoidance Act (GAAR) by two years has helped
    investors.
  • Although Singapore has come down to the second position,
    foreign inflows from that country are increasing year after year. FDI inflow of
    USD 6.74 billion in 2014-15 was the highest ever received from Singapore since
    2006-07.

Bangladesh offers two
SEZs to Indian companies
  • With an aim to boost bilateral trade, Bangladesh has offered
    to establish two Special Economic Zones for Indian companies besides allowing
    Life Insurance Corporation to start operations in the country.
  • After Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s talks with his counterpart
    Sheikh Hasina on Saturday, both sides signed a number of pacts to spur economic
    engagement and enhance connectivity so that North East region could be linked
    to South Asian countries.
  • As per the MoU on the economic zone, Bangladesh will offer
    SEZs to Indian companies in Mongla and Bheramara.
  • India becomes the third country after Japan and China to
    have shown interest in developing economic zones in Bangladesh, media reports
    here said.
  • A separate MoU was also inked on use of Chittagong and
    Mongla Ports by Indian ships to ensure better movement of goods.
  • An agreement was inked between Bangladesh Standards and
    Testing Institution (BSTI) and Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) on cooperation
    in the field of standardisation.

Bangladesh confers
Award of Liberation War Honour on Atal Bihari Vajpayee

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi today received on behalf of
    Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bangladesh’s prestigious Liberation War Honour for his
    “active role” in the country’s freedom struggle, saying the BJP veteran was an
    “inspiration” to him and other political workers.
  • President Abdul Hamid handed over the Bangladesh Liberation
    War Honour to Modi at a glittering ceremony at Bangabhaban, the President’s
    house, as 90-year-old Vajpayee is ailing and unable to travel.
  • The function was attended by Premier Sheikh Hasina, her
    Cabinet colleagues, eminent citizens, diplomats and top Bangladeshi officials.
  • Modi, while receiving the honour, hailed Vajpayee’s
    leadership, saying the “great leader” was a source of inspiration for political
    workers including him.

Appointments
YES Bank shareholders
approve Rana Kapoor’s reappointment as MD and CEO
  • YES Bank shareholders approved 12 resolutions, including
    reappointment of Rana Kapoor as the MD and CEO, at its 11th Annual General
    Meeting (AGM) on Saturday.
  • Kapoor’s reappointment will be for a period of three years.
  • Madhu Kapur, the bank’s second largest shareholder after
    Rana Kapoor and the widow of co-founder Ashok Kapur, has been in a legal
    dispute with YES Bank since June 2013, seeking rights to nomination of
    directors on the bank’s board.
  • A majority of shareholders also approved the re-appointment
    of M R Srinivasan as non-executive and non-independent Director of YES Bank,
    and Diwan Arun Nanda and Ajay Vohra as Independent Directors.

Naresh Kumar
Appointed New NDMC Chief

  • Senior IAS officer Naresh Kumar was appointed as the new
    chairman of New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC).
  • Kumar, a 1987 batch IAS officer of AGMUT cadre, is presently
    Managing Director of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission Board.
  • The appointment was made in consultation with Delhi Chief
    Minister Arvind Kejriwal, an order issued by the Union Home Ministry said.
  • Kumar had previously worked as the Chairman and Managing
    Director (CMD) of the Delhi Transport Corporation, as a Joint Secretary,
    Ministry of Mines and as an Additional Commissioner in the erstwhile Municipal
    Corporation of Delhi.
  • He will take over from Dharam Pal, who was appointed as
    adhoc chairman of NDMC after Jalaj Srivastava was transferred to the Central
    deputation on May 1.

Sports
Barcelona lifts fifth
Champions League crown

  • Barcelona were crowned European champions for the fifth time
    after beating Juventus 3-1 in a superb Champions League final at the Olympic
    Stadium on Saturday.
  • Goals from Ivan Rakitic after four minutes, Luis Suarez in
    the 68th and Brazilian Neymar in stoppage-time sealed a treble for the
    Catalans, who also won La Liga and the Spanish King’s Cup.
  • Both teams played outstanding, attacking football in one of
    the great European finals and Juve pushed Barca all the way, briefly cancelling
    out Rakitic’s early strike when Alvaro Morata equalised after 55 minutes.
  • The thrilling final lifted football’s spirits following the
    revelations in the recent FIFA corruption scandal.

Tintu Luka Wins
Maiden Gold As India Finishes 3rd in Medal Standings

  • Tintu Luka bagged her maiden gold in a major international
    event by winning the women’s 800m finals as India finished with five medals on
    the final day of competitions to sign off third in the 21st Asian Athletics
    Championships here today.
  • India secured a medal haul of 4 gold, 5 silver and 4 bronze
    in the championships to finish third behind China (15, 13, 13) and Qatar (7, 2,
    1). Japan (4, 3, 11) and Bahrain (3, 3, 2) finished fourth and fifth
    respectively.
  • This was India’s best finish after 2007 in Amman, Jordan
    where the country was placed second.
  • National record holder Luka clocked her season’s best timing
    of 2:01.53 to clinch the gold at Wuhan Sports Center.
  • China’s Zhao Jing (2:03.40) took the silver while Sri Lankan
    Nimali Klarachchige (2:03.94) won the bronze.
  • This was 26-year-old Luka’s first individual title in a
    major international event after breaking into the scene in 2008-09 with a lot
    of promise under the tutelage of the legendary P T Usha.
  • She had won gold as part of the 4x400m relay teams in both
    2013 Asian Championships and 2014 Asian Games.
