    . With this, IDBI became the first public sector bank to open a global
    desk at GIFT City
    .
  2. National Association of Software and
    Services Companies (NASSCOM)
    on 5
    May 2016 signed a partnership agreement
    with Facebook
    to build a product design
    initiative in India.
  3. Indian Railways (IR) on 4 May 2016 announced the creation of Non-Fare Revenue
    Directorate to carry out advertisements in rail coaches
    , along the
    track and near stations.
  4. Minister of Railways Suresh
    Prabhakar Prabhu on 5 May 2016 dedicated to the nation a high speed Wi-Fi hotspot at the
    three Railway Stations
    . These stations are Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, Kachiguda
    in Telangana and Raipur in Chhattisgarh.
  5. Goa-based defence shipyard, Goa
    Shipyard Limited (GSL), on 5 May 2016 launched Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Shaurya at Vasco.
    The is the fifth ship of a series of six off-shore patrol vessels  (OPVs) that the Indian Coast Guard had tasked
    the Vasco defence public sector undertaking to build.
  6. The Union Government on 5 May
    2016 announced that
    the H.R. Nagendra Committee on Yoga Education in Universities
    has
    recommended seven programmes for implementation in universities.
  7. Indian Parashar Kulkarni in the first week of May 2016 won
    the Commonwealth Short Story Prize for 2016, for the Asia region
    . He
    was awarded for his politically grounded unpublished short fiction ‘Cow and
    Company
    ‘.
  8. The agriculture project Harita-Priya of
    Andhra Pradesh
    on 3 May 2016 won the
    World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) 2016 prize in e-Agriculture
    category
    . The prize was announced in Geneva by International
    Telecommunications Union (ITU) Secretary-General Houlin Zhao.
  9. Senior IPS officer Kumar Rajesh
    Chandra
    on 5 May 2016 was appointed the Chief of Bureau of Civil
    Aviation Security (BCAS)
    .
  10. PCB has appointed Mickey Arthur as Pakistan’s head coach.

Finance/Banking –
IDBI Bank first PSB to open banking unit at GIFT City’s IFSC

  • IDBI Bank on Friday announced
    opening of its international banking unit (IBU) within the International
    Financial Services Centre (IFSC) at Gujarat International Finance Tec-City
    (GIFT City). With this, IDBI became the first public sector bank to open a global
    desk at GIFT City.
  • The bank is aiming to provide
    foreign currency funding facility to its Indian clients from GIFT City.
  • IDBI Bank has presence at DIFC,
    Dubai which is catering to foreign currency and trade related requirements of
    corporate clients. This is further complemented by opening of IBU at GIFT City.
  • According to GIFT City officials,
    other public sector banks are also going to start their IBU operation in coming
    days. Four private sector banks have already begun operation in GIFT City.

NASSCOM inks MoU with Facebook to develop a product design initiative

  • National Association of Software
    and Services Companies (NASSCOM) on 5 May 2016 signed a partnership agreement
    with Facebook to build a product design initiative in India.
  • The agreement focus on assisting
    the innovation ecosystem by helping product based companies to build solutions
    in key sectors where technology can play a transformational role.

Special features of Product Design Initiative
  • This initiative is aimed towards
    encouraging Indian entrepreneurs to become problem solvers and develop
    solutions based on innovation and design thinking.
  • It is a Nasscom’s country-wide
    initiative with an aim to offer focused programmes to build awareness in
    product design and mentorship.
  • Nasscom Product Council through
    its flagship programme aim at supporting over 500 product start-ups on product
    design.
  • It focuses on training over 5000
    product designers over a period of two years.

Indian Railways creates Non-Fare Revenue Directorate to explore
advertising in train coaches
  • Indian Railways (IR) on 4 May
    2016 announced the creation of Non-Fare Revenue Directorate to carry out
    advertisements in rail coaches, along the track and near stations.
  • The decision to create a
    directorate was taken to increase the revenue substantially from non-tariff
    sources.

Key highlights of Non-Fare Revenue Directorate
  • It will explore getting
    advertisements on coaches, wagons, locomotives and at stations and commercial
    exploitation of vacant rail land among others.
  • It will be headed by a
    senior-level railway official.
  • It will focus on various ways to
    enhance revenues by 10 per cent to 20 per cent from the current 5 per cent from
    the non-tariff sources.

India –
Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu launched Wi-Fi hotspot at Vijayawada, Kachiguda
and Raipur

  • Minister of Railways Suresh
    Prabhakar Prabhu on 5 May 2016 dedicated to the nation a high speed Wi-Fi
    hotspot at the three Railway Stations. These stations are Vijayawada in Andhra
    Pradesh, Kachiguda in Telangana and Raipur in Chhattisgarh.
  • The Wi-Fi facility for the
    visitors and rail users of these stations has been commissioned by RailTel in
    association with Google for providing high speed state of the art world class
    internet experience to the commuters.

Key highlights of Wi-Fi hotspots launched
  • Kacheguda, Raipur and Vijayawada
    Railway Stations became Wi-Fi hot spot from 5 May 2016.
  • RailTel Corporation of India Ltd.
    has been mandated by Ministry of Railways to provide Wi-Fi for use of
    passengers at A1, A and B category Railway stations.
  • RailTel engaged with Google as
    the technology partner for setting up high speed Wi-Fi network initially in A1
    and A category stations.

Offshore patrol vessel ICGS Shaurya launched

  • Goa-based defence shipyard, Goa
    Shipyard Limited (GSL), on 5 May 2016 launched Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS)
    Shaurya at Vasco. The is the fifth ship of a series of six off-shore patrol
    vessels  (OPVs) that the Indian Coast
    Guard had tasked the Vasco defence public sector undertaking to build.
  • This 105-metre new generation OPV
    that was launched by the Governor of Goa, Mridula Sinha will be delivered to
    the Coast Guard after sea trials are completed. The ICGS Shaurya will be
    commissioned into service in early 2017.

H R Nagendra Committee on Yoga Education in Universities submitted its
recommendations

  • The Union Government on 5 May
    2016 announced that the H.R. Nagendra Committee on Yoga Education in
    Universities has recommended seven programmes for implementation in
    universities.
  • The Union Government on 15
    January 2016 had constituted a committee on yoga education in universities. The
    committee was headed by Professor H.R. Nagendra, Chancellor, Swami Vivekananda
    Yoga Anusandhana, Samsthana, Bengaluru.
  • The committee had submitted its
    report on 19 April 2016.

Terms of Reference of the Committee:
  • To identify the courses and
    programmes in Yogic Art and Science and the levels at which they can be offered
  • To spell out the scope of
    programmes offered at Certificate, Diploma, Degree, Post Graduate
    Degree/Postgraduate Diploma and Research levels, and to develop broad details
    of the curriculum in core and elective courses thereof

Indian Parashar Kulkarni wins 2016 Commonwealth Short Story Prize for
Asia Region

  • Indian Parashar Kulkarni in the
    first week of May 2016 won the Commonwealth Short Story Prize for 2016, for the
    Asia region. He was awarded for his politically grounded unpublished short
    fiction ‘Cow and Company’.
  • He will receive a cash prize of
    2500 pounds (3835 US dollars).
  • The story ‘Cow and Company’
    narrates the story of four men in search of a cow. The story manages to keep
    the reader engaged through twists and turns show the connections between
    culture and commercial interests.
  • Parashar Kulkarni is an assistant
    professor in Social Sciences at Yale NUS College Singapore.
  • He is one of the five winners of
    2016 Commonwealth Short Story Prize.

Winners from other four regions are:
  1. Faraaz Mahomed – ‘The Pigeon’
    with its playful tone and unreliable narrator
  2. Stefanie Seddon – Eel, a simply
    told and moving story of childhood
  3. Lance Dowrich – comedic
    ‘Ethelbert and the Free Cheese’
  4. Tina Makereti – ‘Black Milk’,
    which impressed with a lyricism that takes the reader into another world while
    keeping them always on earth

Agriculture project Harita-Priya of Andhra Pradesh wins WSIS 2016 prize

  • The agriculture project
    Harita-Priya of Andhra Pradesh on 3 May 2016 won the World Summit on the
    Information Society (WSIS) 2016 prize in e-Agriculture category.
  • The prize was announced in Geneva
    by International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Secretary-General Houlin Zhao.
  • Key features of Harita-Priya
    Project
  • Harita-Priya stands for
    Harmonized Information of Agriculture, Revenue and Irrigation for a
    Transformation Agenda – Precision Technology for Agriculture.
  • It meant to collect very specific
    climate data from farms and give farmers personalised information through SMS
  • It uses wireless sensor networks
    to collect micro-climatic information from farms.

President Pranab Mukherjee confers Niryat Shree and Niryat Bandhu
Awards

  • President Pranab Mukherjee on 4
    May 2016 conferred the 15th set of Federation of Indian Export Organisations
    (FIEO) Niryat Shree and Niryat Bandhu Awards in New Delhi.
  • The awards were presented at the
    Golden Jubilee celebrations of Federation of Indian Export Organisations
    (FIEO).
  • The awards were conferred to the
    companies from various sectors of exports besides service providers, banks, and
    various facilitating agencies which are promoting exports during the year
    2015-16.

List of award recipients
  • Reliance Industry was adjudged as
    the top foreign exchange earner and leading exporter of last 50 years.
  • TCS bagged the Gold Award in IT
    services. Exporters from engineering, chemicals, textiles, agro and processed
    sector, etc. were also given Gold/Silver/Bronze awards.
  • State Bank of India got the Gold
    award followed by Canara Bank and Punjab National Bank are among the supporting
    institutions.
  • Besides conferring the awards,
    the president also unveiled the brand new FIEO Logo representing growth,
    vibrancy, innovation and entrepreneurship.

Appointments –
Kumar Rajesh Chandra appointed Chief of Bureau of Civil Aviation
Security

  • Senior IPS officer Kumar Rajesh
    Chandra on 5 May 2016 was appointed the Chief of Bureau of Civil Aviation
    Security (BCAS).
  • The Appointments Committee of the
    Cabinet has approved the name of Chandra for appointment to the post of
    Director General (formerly known as Commissioner of Security (Civil Aviation)
    in the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security.
  • Chandra has been appointed in
    place of IPS officer G S Malhi. Malhi had completed his tenure as BCAS Chief in
    November 2012. The crucial post was lying vacant since then.

Sports –
Mickey Arthur appointed Pakistan’s head coach

  • PCB has appointed Mickey Arthur
    as Pakistan’s head coach. He fills the role vacated by Waqar Younis’
    resignation in April, following Pakistan’s early exit from the World T20.
  • This is Arthur’s third assignment
    with an international side; he coached South Africa from 2005 to 2010, and
    Australia from 2011 to 2013. A PCB release said Arthur was expected to take
    over by the end of the month.
  • Arthur, who played 110
    first-class matches in a South African domestic career lasting a decade and a half,
    has had a chequered past as an international coach.
