Vijaya Bank set to develop 100 digital villages

  • India’s public sector bank,
    Vijaya Bank is going to develop 100 digital villages spread across various
    states of the country.
  • The move is being undertaken by
    the bank as a part of its initiative to promote digital banking among the rural
    population.
  • Speaking on the development,
    Executive Director of the bank, B S Rama Rao said that Vijaya Bank is the only
    public sector financial institution to develop digital villages with a focus on
    rural areas and it has already developed five villages including the one in
    Guntur district.
  • The project of 100 digital
    villages will be inaugurated within a month.
  • The digital villages will
    comprise services such as internet, Wi-Fi connectivity, mobile payment
    facilities, ATM cards and online banking among others.
  • The bank would also be running a
    door-to-door campaign to educate the villagers.
  • It will also open bank accounts
    to all the eligible villagers including children and encourage them to make
    transactions digitally.
  • The bank’s digital villages
    project was developed even before the announcement of demonetisation.
  • Already, the bank has developed 5
    villages into Digital Villages.
  • Out of the 100, Andhra Pradesh
    will be getting 10 digital villages.
India signs loan agreement with World Bank for Assam Citizen Centric
Service Delivery project

  • India on 5 June 2017 signed a USD
    39.2 million loan agreement with the World Bank for the Assam Citizen Centric
    Service Delivery project.
  • The loan will be provided by the
    International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), an international
    financial institution under the World Bank that offers loans to middle-income
    developing countries.
  • The loan agreement was signed by
    Raj Kumar, Joint Secretary under Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of
    Finance on behalf of India and Hisham Abdo, Manager Operations (India) on
    behalf of the World Bank.
  • The Implementing Entity Agreement
    was signed by the Additional Chief Secretary, Assam Government and the Country
    Director (India) on behalf of the World Bank.
  • The total estimated cost of the
    Assam Citizen Centric Service Delivery project is USD 49 million, out of which
    USD 39.2 million will be financed by the World Bank. The remaining funds will
    be utilised from the Assam Budget.
  • The objective of the project is
    to improve access in the delivery of selected public services in Assam.
  • The Project seeks to enable
    citizens to access services under the Assam Right To Public Services Act, 2012
    in a timely, efficient, and accountable manner.
  • The Project adopts an integrated
    approach to improve access and accountability.
  • The programme duration is of 5
    years.

India, Sri Lanka sign pact for
$318 million line of credit

  • India today signed an agreement
    with Sri Lanka to provide USD 318 million as line of credit to develop the
    island nation’s railway sector, officials said.
  • The agreement was signed by RHS
    Samaratunga, Secretary, Ministry of Finance and Mass media, and David
    Rasquinha, Managing Director of India’s Export0Import Bank in Colombo.
  • During his first visit to Sri
    Lanka as prime minister in 2015, Narendra Modi had declared a line of credit of
    USD 318 million for the development of Sri Lanka’s railway sector.
  • That visit, the first standalone
    bilateral visit by an Indian prime minister since 1987, had come in the
    backdrop of increasing Chinese presence in the Indian Ocean nation.
  • China has been investing heavily
    in Sri Lanka, developing mainly ports that could potentially be used as a base
    for its navy, though Beijing says the investments are part of its Belt and Road
    Initiative that aims to link it with Europe and Africa via the Indian Ocean.
  • India has provided four lines of
    credit to Sri Lanka to develop its railway sector, amounting to USD 966
    million.

Government to implement India’s first Rural LED Street Lighting Project
in AP

  • The Union government would be
    retrofitting 10 lakh conventional street lights with LED lights in Gram
    Panchayats of 7 districts in Andhra Pradesh.
  • The project would be undertaken
    through the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) under the Ministry of
    Power.
  • This is the first project for
    rural LED street lighting in the country under the Government of India’s Street
    Lighting National Project (SLNP).
  • In the first phase, the replacement
    will be undertaken in gram panchayats of the districts of Guntur, Prakasham,
    Nellore, Kurnool, Kadapa, Ananthapur and Chittoor.
  • This replacement drive will
    enable the gram panchayats to cumulatively save approximately 147 million units
    of electricity annually and lead to reduction of 12 Cr tonnes of CO2.
  • A French Development Agency,
    Agence Française de Développement (AFD), is funding the entire capital cost of
    the project.
  • The EESL would be carrying out
    the entire annual maintenance and warranty replacement in these gram panchayats
    for a period of 10 years.
Kerala Government implements ‘green protocol’ for weddings

  • The Government of Kerala has
    implemented a ‘green protocol’ to make auspicious occasions such as weddings
    more nature-friendly.
  • With the implementation of the
    protocol, the use of plastic and other non-degradable articles including
    disposable glasses, plates and thermocol decorations would be prohibited at
    marriage functions.
  • Instead, people would be
    encouraged to use tumblers, plates and utensils made from glass and other
    environment-friendly metals.
  • To ensure proper implementation
    of the protocol, inspections will be held at marriage halls, convention
    centres, hotels and other venues of the wedding ceremony.
  • Special squads, comprising
    officials of Suchitwa Mission and revenue department, have been formed to carry
    out inspections in wedding halls and record the ceremony.
  • Strict action would be taken in
    case of any violation based on the nature of utensils and articles found.
  • Suchitwa Mission’, the state
    nodal agency for sanitation, has already launched the initiative on a pilot
    basis in some districts of the state including Kannur, Ernakulam, Kollam and
    Alappuzha.
Habibganj Railway Station to become India’s first private railway
station

  • Habibganj Railway Station,
    located in the suburbs of Bhopal, will become India’s first railway station to
    be redeveloped in a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode.
  • The station redevelopment work in
    the railway station will be launched on 9 June 2017 by Railway Minister Suresh
    Prabhu.
  • The project aims at developing
    Habibganj Railway Station as a as a world-class transit hub equipped with all
    amenities.
  • The operation and maintenance of
    the railway station has been given to Bhopal-based Bansal Group for a period of
    eight years.
  • The Bansal Group plans to
    completely overhaul the station and develop four commercial land parcels to
    make Habibganj a commercial hub with shops, offices and hotels, all within
    three years.
  • The environment-friendly railway
    station will be powered by solar energy.
  • The station will also have
    facilities for disabled. It will have lifts, escalators and travelators and
    underpasses.
  • The station will be redesigned in
    such a way that the premises, in case of a emergency, can be evacuated in four
    minutes and passengers can reach designated points of safety in six minutes.
  • The Bansal Group will be
    responsible for all the facilities at the station like food stalls, retiring
    rooms, power, platform maintenance, et cetera. However, the Group will not be
    responsible for core operations such as train and parcel movement, signalling
    and ticketing.
World News
World’s fastest elevator to be installed in skyscraper complex building
in China

  • The world’s fastest elevator that
    can operate at a record breaking speed of 1260 metres per minute is set to been
    installed in a skyscraper complex building in China.
  • The record-breaking speed was
    recorded during a test of the elevator at the CTF Finance Center, a 530-meter
    tall skyscraper in the city of Guangzhou, China.
  • The test was conducted for
    technology development of Hitachi elevators. However, the elevator in Guangzhou
    will only run at its rated speed of 72 kilometers per hour when it is in
    service.
  • The elevator has been developed
    by the Japanese tech company Hitachi.
Nepal, China sign MoU for construction of Budhigandaki Hydropower
Project

  • Nepal on 5 June 2017 signed a
    Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China for construction of 1200-megawatt
    Budhigandaki Hydropower Project.
  • The agreement was signed at
    Kathmandu, Nepal by Nepal Energy Minister Janardan Sharma and Lv Zexiang,
    President of China Gezhouba Water & Power (Group) Co Ltd (CGGC).
  • Budhigandaki Hydropower Project
    will be developed on Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Finance (EPCF)
    model. Under this model, CGGC will help arrange funds required to develop the
    project.
  • As per the MoU, CGGC has one year
    time to conduct assessment of the hydropower project and arrange necessary
    funds for its development.

Anand Neelakantan, Haraprasad Das, Paramita Satpathy to be honoured
with Kalinga Literary Awards

  • Popular writer Anand Neelakantan,
    Odia poet Haraprasad Das and author Paramita Satpathy were on 6 June 2017
    announced as the winners of the Kalinga Literary Awards.
  • Neelakantan was chosen for the
    Kalinga International Literary Award, Haraprasad Das was chosen for the Kalinga
    Literary Youth Award and Satpathy was chosen for the Kalinga Karubaki Award.
  • They will receive the award
    during the Kalinga Literary Festival 2017 which will be held from 10 June to 12
    June 2017.
  • Around 200 celebrities from the
    world of literature, cinema, media and politics will be present at the Kalinga
    Literary Festival in Bhubaneswar to deliberate on the theme ‘Literature for
    Peace and Harmony’.

United Nations observes 2017 Russian Language Day

  • The United Nations Russian
    Language Day was observed on 6 June 2017.
  • The day is observed annually to
    maintain the equality of all six official UN languages. These six official
    languages are English, Arabic, Spanish, Chinese, Russian and French.
  • The decision to hold days of
    languages was adopted by the UN Department of Public Information on the eve of
    the International Mother Language Day, celebrated annually on 21 February, at
    the initiative of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
    Organization (UNESCO).
  • The purpose of the days of the UN
    languages is to raise awareness of the history, culture and the development of
    each of the six official UN languages among the staff of the Organization.
  • The UN Russian Language Day
    coincides with the birthday of Aleksandr Pushkin, a Russian poet who is
    considered the father of modern Russian literature.

  • Real Madrid made history on 3
    June 2017 as they became the first team ever to win back-to-back Champions
    League titles.
  • Real Madrid defeated Juventus 4–1
    to win a record-extending 12th title. With this victory, Real Madrid became the
    first team to successfully defend their title in the Champions League era, and
    the first to do so since Milan in 1990.
  • The Millennium Stadium in Cardiff
    hosted the final.
