sell their products overseas. - The Union Tribal Affairs Minister
Jual Oram on 5 December 2016 launched the ‘Stanpan Suraksha’
mobile application to promote breastfeeding and keep a check on inapt
promotion of baby food items in the country. - The Indian Space Research Organisation will tomorrow launch Remote
Sensing satellite, RESOURCESAT-2A using its workhorse Polar Satellite
Launch Vehicle (PSLV). - Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar,
who led the five-judge constitution bench in the Supreme Court which had struck down the controversial NJAC Act for
appointment of judges, was today recommended as the 44th Chief Justice of India. - O Panneerselvam was
sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on 5 December 2016. He
succeeded AIADMK supremo and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister who earlier died
at the Apollo Hospital. - Senior IAS officer B.S. Bhullar on 5 December 2016 was appointed the Chief of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation
(DGCA). - French Interior Minister Bernard
Cazeneuve was appointed as the new Prime Minister today after Manuel Valls resigned to seek the
Socialist nomination in the presidential election, the presidency said. - 45th Navy Day was observed on 4 December
2016 in India. The Day is celebrated to rejoice the splendor,
achievements and role of the naval force of India. - Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, J
Jayalalithaa who suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday passed away on 5
December 2016. She was 68. AIADMK supremo breathed her last at 11:30 PM at
Apollo Hospital, Chennai.

Investment Commissioner, Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade)
visited India with a six-member delegation from November 21-24 to expand
linkages between technology and innovation and the Indian IT sector. This
mission is an excellent opportunity for Indian IT companies to learn more about
Australia’s advanced capabilities. - This comes after Australian
companies can help solve cyber security challenges in the country with
home-grown technologies and solutions, a senior official said on Thursday.
PNB partners with Ola to deploy mobile ATMs
- Punjab National Bank (PNB) on
Tuesday announced a partnership with cab aggregator Ola to aid cash withdrawals
for the citizens of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). - PNB ATM machine equipped Ola cabs
have been stationed in Gurgaon, Laxminagar, Janakpuri, Civil Lines, AIIMS,
Netaji Subhash Place, Manesar, Nehru Place, Bhikaji Cama Place, Mayur Vihar,
Faridabad, Tilak Nagar, Rajouri Garden and Greater Kailash, with Ola volunteers
and PNB executives, to assist people in withdrawing cash without any hassle. - Earlier this week, Ola rolled out
similar activity for the citizens of Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Pune, Kolkata,
Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Jaipur, in partnership with Yes Bank.
Amazon launches global startup program Launchpad in India
- E-commerce giant Amazon on 5
December 2016 launched its global startup program named Launchpad in India. The
Launchpad programme was launched with an aim to enable Indian startups to sell
their products overseas. - In this regard, Amazon India tied
up with Start Up India programme of Department of Industrial Policy and
Promotion (DIPP), NASSCOM’s 10000 Startups, Indian Angel Network (IAN), NITI
Aayog, Governments of Maharashtra, Telangana and TiE. - These tie-ups were made to roll
in as many startups as it can.
Highlights of the Programme
- It aims to help startups to sell,
market, and deliver their products to gain more visibility. - It will provide an exceptional
opportunity for Indian Startups to get access to big consumer markets
nationally and internationally. - Through this program, small
entrepreneurs and innovators can use Amazon’s online platform to increase scale
of their businesses and get easy access to global markets.

Union Government launches Stanpan Suraksha mobile app to promote
breastfeeding

- The Union Tribal Affairs Minister
Jual Oram on 5 December 2016 launched the ‘Stanpan Suraksha’ mobile application
to promote breastfeeding and keep a check on inapt promotion of baby food items
in the country. - The mobile application was
developed by the Breastfeeding Promotion Network of India (BPNI).

- It is first-of-its-kind app that
aims to promote breastfeeding and baby food promotion reporting mechanism. - If anyone comes across any inapt
promotion of baby food, he or she just has to click a photograph of
inappropriate baby food promotion and send it to BPNI. - It also has a city-wise database
of trained breastfeeding counsellor to educate and provide assistance to mothers
during antenatal and postnatal period. - Moreover, it provides sign up
option for mothers who wish to become a breastfeeding counsellor. - It will also be able to gather
incremental evidence on promotion of baby foods from remote locations as well.
ISRO to launch remote-sensing satellite RESOURCESAT-2A on Wednesday
- The Indian Space Research
Organisation will tomorrow launch Remote Sensing satellite, RESOURCESAT-2A
using its workhorse Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV). - PSLV-C36/ RESOURCESAT-2A will
blast off at 10:25 hours from SDSC (Satish Dhawan Space Centre) at Sriharikota
in Andhra Pradesh. - The satellite was earlier planned
for launch on November 28. - ISRO, which began a 36-hour
countdown last night, today said Mono Methyl Hydrazine (MMH) fuel and Mixed
Oxidesof Nitrogen (MON-3) oxidiser filling operations of the fourth stage (PS4)
of PSLV-C36 are completed. - PSLV-C36, the 38th flight of
PSLV, will place the 1,235-kg RESOURCESAT-2A into an 817-km polar Sun
Synchronous Orbit (SSO). - In this flight, the ‘XL’ version
of PSLV with sixsolid strap-on motors is used. - RESOURCESAT-2A, a Remote Sensing
satellite intended for resource monitoring, is a follow on mission to
RESOURCESAT-1 and RESOURCESAT-2, launched in 2003 and 2011 respectively.

Indian Constitution, was in news on 6 December 2016. He came into news on his
60th death anniversary. - On the occasion, lakhs of people
converged at Chaitya Bhoomi to pay homage to him. Chaitya Bhoomi is the place
where Ambedkar was cremated after his death on 6 December 1956.
Appointments –
Justice J S Khehar to be the 44th Chief Justice of India
- Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar, who
led the five-judge constitution bench in the Supreme Court which had struck
down the controversial NJAC Act for appointment of judges, was today
recommended as the 44th Chief Justice of India. - Chief Justice of India T S Thakur
today wrote a letter recommending the name of Justice Khehar, who is the senior
most judge of the Supreme Court to be his successor. - Justice Khehar, 64, will be the
first Chief Justice from the Sikh community and he will succeed CJI Thakur who
will be demitting office on January 3, 2017. - Justice Khehar, who will be sworn
in on January 4, will hold the tenure for over seven months till August 27,
2017. - Besides heading the bench in NJAC
matter, Justice Khehar has also headed a bench which had set aside the
imposition of President’s Rule in Arunachal Pradesh in January this year.
O Panneerselvam sworn-in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu
- O Panneerselvam was sworn-in as
the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on 5 December 2016. He succeeded AIADMK
supremo and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister who earlier died at the Apollo
Hospital. - Governor Ch. Vidyasagar Rao
administered the oath of office and secrecy for Panneerselvam at a somber
ceremony at the Raj Bhawan. Other 31 ministers of the erstwhile Jayalalithaa
Cabinet were also sworn-in. - This was Panneerselvam’s third
swearing-in as Chief Minister. Earlier, he had served Tamil Nadu as its Chief
Minster, during 2001-02 and 2014-15, after Jayalalithaa was unseated by the
courts. - Tamil Nadu government has
announced a seven-day State Mourning from 6 November 2016. The government has
also declared a three-day holiday for all educational institutions in the
state.
AirAsia India appoints Amar Abrol as Managing Director
- AirAsia on 5 December 2016
announced the appointment of Amar Abrol as its Managing Director in addition to
his role as Chief Executive Officer (CEO). - As per AirAsia, “Abrol was
appointed as the Managing Director following the company’s board meeting held on
29 November 2016.” He was appointed as CEO of the airline in April 2016. - Abrol holds over two decades of
experience in different markets including Hong Kong, Singapore, the UK and
Malaysia.
B S Bhullar appointed Chief of Directorate General of Civil Aviation
- Senior IAS officer B.S. Bhullar
on 5 December 2016 was appointed the Chief of the Directorate General of Civil
Aviation (DGCA). - At present, Bhullar, a 1986-batch
IAS officer, is working as an Additional Secretary in Civil Aviation Ministry.
He was also holding the additional charge of the DGCA. - The post of the Chief of DGCA was
lying vacant for over four months after M Sathiyavathy, a 1982-batch IAS
officer of the union territories cadre, was named as new Union Labour Secretary
in July 2016. She was the first woman chief of the aviation regulator.

Shavkat Mirziyoyev wins Uzbekistan Presidential Election
- The Prime Minister and acting
President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev was elected the country’s president
in the presidential election, which was held on 4 December 2016. - As per the Central Election
Commission of Uzbekistan, Mirziyoyev won the election with an overwhelming
vote. He garnered 88.61% of the votes, which is above the required over 50% of
valid ballots to become a president. - The other three presidential
candidates were: the National Revival Democratic Party’s Sarwar Otamuratov, who
scored 2.35%, Hotamzhon Ketmonov of the People’s Democratic Party scored 3.73%
and the Justice Social Democratic Party’s Narimon Umarov scored 3.46% of the votes.
France names Bernard Cazeneuve as PM after Valls quits
- French Interior Minister Bernard
Cazeneuve was appointed as the new Prime Minister today after Manuel Valls
resigned to seek the Socialist nomination in the presidential election, the
presidency said. - Cazeneuve, who has overseen the
security forces’ reaction to a string of jihadist attacks that have killed more
than 230 people in France over the past two years, will take control of the
Socialist government until legislative elections in June. - He was named Prime Minister after
Valls presented his resignation to President Francois Hollande early today. - Hollande’s office said Valls’
resignation had been accepted. “The President of the Republic has appointed
Bernard Cazeneuve as prime minister and asked him to form the new government,”
the statement said. - Valls, who had been prime
minister for the past two and a half years, announced yesterday he would step
down to try to rally the fractured French left ahead of a primary in January.

- Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, J
Jayalalithaa who suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday passed away on 5 December
2016. She was 68. AIADMK supremo breathed her last at 11:30 PM at Apollo
Hospital, Chennai. - She was put on heart assist device
following the attack and her condition was stated to be critical by senior doctors
at the Apollo hospital. - The minister was brought in with
complaints of temperature, dehydration, and congestion on 22 September 2016 but
after the tests, it was revealed that there was a collection of fluid in her
lungs and she was put under observation. - UK critical care specialist
Richard Beale was specially flown in to evaluate Jayalalitha’s reports. A
three-member team of specialists was also dispatched from AIIMS to provide Amma
with best medical care and opinion.
