after a 32-year battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was 74.

Axis Bank launches India’s first certified green bond at London Stock

- Axis Bank today raised $500
million at the London Stock Exchange after it launched India’s first
internationally-listed certified green bond to finance climate change solutions
around the world. - One of India’s leading private
sector capital markets banks opened trading at the London Stock Exchange (LSE)
with the bond, which is certified by the Climate Bonds Standards Board and
raised $500 million. - Axis Bank said the proceeds of
the bond will be invested in green energy, transportation and infrastructure projects,
reinforcing India’s commitment to produce 175,000 MW of renewable power by
2022.
India, Qatar inked 7 agreements to boost cooperation
- India and Qatar on 5 June 2016
signed seven agreements in various fields including assistance in custom matters,
skill development and recognition of qualifications and health. - The agreements were inked after
delegation-level talks between Prime Minster Narendra Modi and Qatar’s Emir
Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani at Doha. Modi was on a two day visit to Qatar
on 4 June to 5 June 2016. - Before the talks, Modi was given
a ceremonial reception at the Emiri Diwan, the seat of power of Qatar’s ruler.

Customs Matters - MoU on cooperation in the
exchange of intelligence related to money laundering, terrorism-financing and
related crimes: This was inked between Financial Intelligence Unit – India
(FIU-IND) and the Qatar Financial Information Unit (QFIU). - MoU on participation of Qatari
institutional investors in Infrastructure projects in India: This MoU was inked
between National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) and Qatar Investment
Authority (QIA). - MoU for cooperation in Skill
Development and Recognition of Qualifications: This was inked between the Union
Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, and the National
Qualifications Authority/Supreme Education Council, Government of the State of
Qatar. - MoU on cooperation in Tourism

India –
Guwahati becomes first city to have ‘City Animal’
- The Assam state capital on Monday
became the first city in the country to have its own City Animal with the
Kamrup Metropolitan district administration declaring the Gangetic river
dolphin as the mascot. - In a press conference, Kamrup
Metropolitan Deputy Commissioner M Angamuthu said that the animal, locally
known as ‘Sihu’, would be the ‘City Animal’ of Guwahati. - The district administration had organised
online and off-line voting among three protected creatures, which are on the
verge of extinction, to decide the mascot. - Along with Gangetic river
dolphin, the other two animals were black softshell turtle (Bor Kaso) and
greater adjutant stork (Hargila).
Odisha becomes first Indian state to give pension and food benefits to
transgenders

- Odisha in the first week of June
2016 became the first Indian state to give transgender people social welfare
benefits, such as a pension, housing and food grains. - The state took the step to give
the transgender community the same benefits as those living below the poverty
line. The step was aimed at improving their overall social and economic status.
Key highlights of the policy
- Members of the transgender
community will be given BPL cards. - The BPL cards will allow them to
access benefits under various government welfare programmes. - This includes schemes that
provide free housing, 100 days of paid work annually, pensions and loans to
start up their own businesses. - They will also be entitled to 5
kg of food grains every month under India’s National Food Security Act.
Bihar CM Nitish Kumar launches Right to Public Grievance Redressal Act
- Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar
on 5 June 2016 launched Right to Public Grievance Redressal Act. The act seeks
disposal of peoples’ complaints or redressal of grievances from Government
officials within 60-days.
Features of the Law
- The law has strict provisions in
non-compliance of applications. - Officials not adhering to
provisions of the law could be dismissed from service or face a penalty of from
500 rupees to 5000 rupees. - All the 42 Departments of the
State government will be covered under the new Act. - The Government has one Grievance
Redressal Officer in each department as well as first and second Appellate
authorities.
Asia’s first Gyps Vulture Reintroduction Programme launched in Haryana
- The Haryana Government on 3 June
2016 launched Asia’s First Gyps Vulture Reintroduction Programme at Jatayu
Conservation Breeding Centre, Pinjore. - The breeding and conservation of
vultures is a significant step in the direction of saving the endangered
species. - Union Environment Minister
Prakash Javadekar and Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar jointly
released two Himalayan Griffons into the wild from the Conservation Centre. - Many vultures disappeared due to
Diclofenac which is a pain killer drug given to cattle that can kill birds. - At present, the drug is banned in
India. - Vultures play a vital role in
keeping the environment clean, their breeds should be increased and the government
is constantly working to increase their numbers.
PM Modi, Ghani inaugurates Afghan-India Friendship Dam
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi and
Afghanistan President Dr Ashraf Ghani jointly inaugurated the Afghan-India
Friendship Dam with in Herat province in Western Afghanistan on 4 June 2016. - The Dam was earlier known as
Salma Dam on the river Chist-e-Sharif in western Herat neighbouring Iran. It
will irrigate 75000 hectares of land and generate 42 Mega Watts of power. - At the inaugural function, Afghan
Presresident connferred the the highest civilian honour of Afghanistan, the
Amir Amanullah Khan Award on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. - The Landmark Infrastructure
Project is funded by Union Government. - It is a multipurpose project
planned for generating 42 MW of power, irrigating 75000 hectares of land, water
supply and other benefits to the people of Afghanistan. - It is a landmark infrastructure
project undertaken by Union Government on river Chist-e-Sharif, in Herat
province of Afghanistan. - The project is executed and
implemented by WAPCOS Ltd which is an undertaking of Ministry of Water
Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation.

- The National Skill Development
Corporation (NSDC) today announced the appointment of two key executives in its
leadership team. - Manish Kumar will be joining NSDC
as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Jayant Krishna will
take up the new role of the Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer
(COO) effective July 1, 2016. - The selection committee chose the
leadership based on merit and with an aim to bringing together the combined
strength of two professionals, one hailing from the government sector with an
added experience in the developments sector and the other from the private
sector.
Ashok Ganapathy appointed as the Director of Airtel Business
- Telecom major Bharti Airtel on
Monday announced an appointment of Ashok Ganapathy as the Director of Airtel
Business with effect from July 1, 2016. - He will take over from Manish
Prakash, who is moving into a new role as Director – Strategic Alliances. - Ganapathy will report to Gopal
Vittal, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director (India & South
Asia), Airtel.
V Narayanasamy sworn in as Puducherry Chief Minister
- Senior Congress leader and former
Union Minister V Narayanasamy was today sworn in as the tenth Chief Minister of
Puducherry. - Lt Governor Kiran Bedi
administered the oath of office and secrecy to Narayanasamy and five other
ministers – A Namassivayam, Malladi Krishna Rao, M O H F Shah Jahan, M
Kandasamy and R Kamalakannan – at ‘Gandhi Thidal’ near the sea shore here. - While Rao, hailing from Yanam, an
enclave of Puducherry in Andhra Pradesh, took the oath in Telugu, others took
it in Tamil.
CR Sasikumar takes over as MD of State Bank of Travancore
- CR Sasikumar on 1 June 2016 took
over as Managing Director (MD) of State Bank of Travancore (SBT). - The State Bank of Travancore is
one of the associate banks of State Bank of India (SBI). - Prior to the present posting in
State Bank of Travancore, he worked as Deputy Managing Director, Inspection
& Management Audit, at SBI Corporate Centre in Hyderabad.
Navin Agarwal appointed DG of National Anti-Doping Agency
- Senior IPS officer Navin Agarwal
was on 3 June 2016 appointed as Director General (DG)/ Chief Executive Officer
(CEP) of National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). - The Appointments Committee of
Cabinet (ACC) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved his appointment
as Chief of NADA. He is appointed to the post for five years term. - Navin Agarwal is a 1986 batch IPS
officer of Jammu and Kashmir cadre.

India ranks 2nd on GRD index on ease of doing business: Study
- According to 2016 Global Retail
Development Index (GRDI), India has jumped 13 positions from last year to rank
second among 30 developing countries this year on ease of doing business,
topped by China. - The study which ranks top 30
developing countries for retail investment worldwide, a pick up in GDP growth
and better clarity regarding Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) regulations have
helped india achieve a second ranking. - India’s retail sector has
expanded at a compound annual growth rate of 8.8% between 2013 and 2015, with
annual sales crossing the $1 trillion mark, according to the A T Kearney, a London-based
business consultancy. - India has also become the world’s
fastest growing economy that coupled with a large population base and the
easing of FDI regulations in the sector has made it an even more attractive
market, it said in the ranking.

is Angola. At present, Angola is seeking to restore its elephant’s herds,
conserve Africa’s biodiversity-rich wildlife, and safeguard the environment as
it continues to rebuild after more than a quarter-century of civil war. - The year’s slogan “Go Wild
for Life” encourages everyone to spread the word about wildlife crime and
the damage it does. It also asks people to challenge all to do what they can to

India’s first Mr Universe Manohar Aich dies at 104
- 104-year-old bodybuilder Manohar
Aich, who was once a household name in Bengal after becoming India’s first Mr
Universe in 1952, died at his Baguiati residence yesterday afternoon, according
to family sources. - Aich is survived by two daughters
and two sons, one of whom manages a gym and fitness centre to fulfill his
father’s dream of making the youth “healthy and strong”. - Aich, who turned 104 on March 17,
had become India’s first Mr Universe when he won the 1952 National Amateur
Body-Builders’ Association Universe Championships. - Born in the district of Comilla
(now in Bangladesh), Aich, at just four feet and 11 inches, was not the tallest
of men. - But encouraged by English officer
Reub Martin, Aich took up bodybuilding and made this his passion during his
stint at the Royal Air Force under British colonial rulers.
Muhammad Ali, the All-time Greatest of Boxing, dies at 74
- All-time boxing icon Muhammad Ali
died on 3 June 2016 in the Phoenix, Arizona, after a 32-year battle with Parkinson’s

Clay, Jr. on 17 January 1942. - He was considered as one of the
most recognized sports figures of the past 100 years. - He was crowned Sportsman of the
Century by Sports Illustrated and Sports Personality of the Century by the BBC. - He also wrote several
best-selling books about his career, including The Greatest: My Own Story and
The Soul of a Butterfly. - He won the world heavyweight
championship in 1964 at the age of 22. - He converted to Sunni Islam in
1975 and changed his name to Muhammad Ali and 30 years later He began adhering
to Sufism.
Veteran actor Sulabha Deshpande passed away
- Eminent actor and theatre
personality Sulabha Deshpande passed away 4 June 2016 in Mumbai. She was 79. - Deshpande was considered to be
one of the pioneers of the experimental theatre movement that swept Mumbai in
the 1970s. - In 1971 she co-founded, theatre
group, Awishkar with her husband Arvind Deshpande. - Soon, she established the
Chandrashala, the children’s theatre wing of Awishkar.
