  1. SBI Card on 28 March 2017 launched the Unnati Credit Card to spread
    credit inclusion among masses
    . The card was launched by the Union Minister

    Mines Piyush Goyal at a programe in New Delhi.
  2. In what he described as a game
    changing initiative in creative disruption in the banking space, Uday Kotak,
    executive vice-chairman and MD of Kotak Mahindra Bank announced the launch of 8-11, a completely digital and
    paperless account opening system, that can be used anytime, anywhere
    .
  3. Odisha on 27 March 2017 became
    the first state in the country to carry financial inclusion and extend banking
    services to remote rural areas through Self Help Groups (SHGs).   The
    state’s government has signed an agreement with the State Bank of India for the
    same.
  4. Stockholm-based Truecaller on 28 March 2017 tied-up
    with Bharti Airtel, ICICI Bank and Google in India and also launched the latest version of its
    application with new features.
  5. Airports Authority of India
    (AAI), Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Jharkhand

SBI launched Unnati Credit Card to spread credit inclusion

  • SBI Card on 28 March 2017
    launched the Unnati Credit Card to spread credit inclusion among masses. The
    card was launched by the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for
    Power, Coal, New and Renewable Energy and Mines Piyush Goyal at a programe in
    New Delhi.
  • The card was launched in the
    presence of SBI Chairman Arundhati Bhattacharya and SBI Card CEO Vijay Jasuja.
  • The card is targeted at all SBI
    customers, including the Jan Dhan account-holders across the country. And, It
    is primarily tailored for new users of credit cards, those who do not have a
    credit history.
  • The Unnati would have no annual
    fees (Rs 499/year) for the initial four years and the credit card will be
    offered through 20,000-plus State Bank of India (SBI) branches.
  • Any SBI customer with a balance
    of at least Rs 25,000 in the savings account is eligible for the Unnati credit
    card.
  • The card is accepted in over 24
    million outlets across the globe, including 3,25,000 outlets in India.
  • With SBI Card Unnati, add-on
    cards will be provided to the customer’s parents, spouse, children or siblings
    above the age of 18.
  • The Easy Bill Pay facility of the
    card can be used to pay electricity, telephone, mobile and other utility bills.
Kotak Mahindra Bank launches 8-11 app to double customer base

  • In what he described as a game
    changing initiative in creative disruption in the banking space, Uday Kotak,
    executive vice-chairman and MD of Kotak Mahindra Bank announced the launch of
    8-11, a completely digital and paperless account opening system, that can be
    used anytime, anywhere.
  • Kotak added that 8-11, which he
    claimed was inspired by PM Narendra Modi’s November 8, 2016 decision to
    demonetise the old 500- and 1,000-rupee notes, allows one to open a
    zero-balance, zero-charge account even at an unearthly 2 a.m. The account can
    be opened within five minutes using the Kotak Mahindra’s mobile banking system.
  • Kotak said one only needed an
    Aadhar card and a PAN card to open and operate the account, on which six per
    cent interest would be paid on sums deposited. He added Kotak Mahindra was the
    first bank to use Aadhar-based OTP, which RBI allowed in December 2016, for the
    purpose of account opening.
  • He said 8-11 offered as many as
    100 features including deposits, fund transfer, purchases on Flipkart, PVR and
    other establishments. He claimed the service offered a unique bank-pay-shop
    experience.
  • Kotak also indicated that he
    expected 8-11 would help double the bank’s existing customer base from eight
    million within 18 months.
Rajya Sabha passes Finance Bill

  • The Rajya Sabha on Wednesday
    passed the Finance Bill after various amendments presented by Union Finance
    Minister Arun Jaitley.
  • “As far as benefits are
    concerned, you can produce Aadhar. If you don’t have one, you can produce other
    ID and simultaneously apply for it,” said Arun Jaitley.
  • He further said that the Government
    will issue electoral bonds.
  • “There are a lot of wild
    information going around over the authority of assessment officers over search
    and seizure,” added Jaitley.
  • “Let me clarify this under
    section 132, a satisfaction note must be submitted to search and entering
    premise and that has to be submitted in the court,” he added while
    notifying that the Finance Bill protects the source of information for tax
    evasion.
  • Earlier on Wednesday, Arun
    Jaitley moved four Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bills for consideration and
    passage in the Lok Sabha, which then took them up for discussion. The Central
    Goods and Services Tax (CGST) Bill, 2017, along with three other GST Bills were
    moved for consideration in the lower house.
Odisha becomes the first state to bring banking to remote areas

  • Odisha on 27 March 2017 became
    the first state in the country to carry financial inclusion and extend banking
    services to remote rural areas through Self Help Groups (SHGs). 
  • The state’s government has signed
    an agreement with the State Bank of India for the same.
  • The entire process would be
    carried out in phases, the first of which would include SHGs engaging as
    Banking Correspondents in around 1000 remote Gram Panchayats that have no
    access to banking facilities.
  • Slowly, it would then be extended
    to 4000 unbanked panchayats.
  • It would later be extended across
    the state as a supplement to banking service
  • The arrangement would be of great
    help to people living in rural areas that fall under social security schemes
    like the Pradhan Mantri Bima Surakshya Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Yojana
    and Atal Pension Yojana.
  • It would also help people get access
    to services like opening of bank accounts, depositing and withdrawal of cash,
    use of Rupay Cards, Aadhaar-enabled payments and other banking facilities.
It would also help promote
digital banking.
Truecaller ties-up with Bharti Airtel, ICICI Bank and Google in India

  • Stockholm-based Truecaller on 28
    March 2017 tied-up with Bharti Airtel, ICICI Bank and Google in India and also
    launched the latest version of its application with new features.
  • The latest version of the app
    Truecaller 8 extends the caller ID to SMSes while also enabling users to filter
    out all spam messages. There’s a new Flash messaging feature that allows users
    to quickly send pre-set customised messages, smileys or location to a contact.
Partnership with Bharti Airtel

  • The partnership with Bharti
    Airtel will bring Truecaller app to feature phones in India. The caller ID
    feature of Truecaller will be extended to Bharti’s non-data users using feature
    phones. The ‘Airtel Truecaller ID’ feature will identify a caller and send his
    information via a flash message in advance. The service will be rolled out in
    April 2017.
Partnership with ICICI Bank

  • On the other hand, in partnership
    with ICICI bank, Truecaller will launch its new payments service called
    Truecaller Pay. The Unified Payments Interface-based service will allow users
    to send or receive money using an UPI ID or via mobile numbers registered with
    BHIM app.
  • The Truecaller payments service
    will be available to ICICI as well as non-ICICI users. It can be used to
    recharge phone and pay postpaid bills. The service powered by ICICI bank is
    absolutely secure and follows 2-factor authentication as per RBI guidelines.
Partnership with Google Duo

  • While, Google Duo will be
    integrated into the Truecaller app allowing users to make video calls through
    it. The updated Truecaller app will now have a ‘Duo’ icon along with ‘Call’ and
    ‘SMS’ icon in its dialer.
  • This will add a crucial
    communications layer that strengthens the value of Truecaller’s dialer, caller
    ID, and spam blocking service that is already used by more than 250 million
    users globally.
AAI, DRDO and Jharkhand Government signed a Tripartite MoU for
Development of Deoghar Airport in Jharkhand’

  • Airports Authority of India
    (AAI), Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Jharkhand
    Government on 28 March 2017 signed a tripartite MoU for development of Deoghar
    Airport in Deoghar district of Jharkhand. The MoU was signed in Ranchi in a
    ceremony held at the residence of Chief Minister Raghubar Das.
  • As per the signed MoU, the
    existing Deoghar airport will be developed for operations of A-320 and C-130
    Aircraft.
  • Land: The Jharkhand Government
    will hand over 600.34 acres of land to AAI apart from the existing 53.41 acres
    of land of Deoghar airport. These 600.34 acres of land was acquired by the
    state government in recent past.
  • Financial provisions: DRDO,
    Jharkhand Government and AAI will provide Rs 200 crores and Rs 50 crores
    respectively to develop, operationalise and maintain the airport.
  • Time Frame: As expected or
    decided, the Deoghar airport will be developed and operationlised in two years.
IAF launched Aviation Turbine Fuel Digital Issue and Payment

  • The Chief of Air Staff Air Chief
    Marshal BS Dhanoa PVSM AVSM YSM VM ADC on 28 March 2017 formally launched the
    Aviation Turbine Fuel Digital Issue and Payment (ATF DIP) system.
  • On this occasion, the Chief of
    Air Staff complimented the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) for its
    commitment and unstinted support in ensuring robust supply chain management of
    Aviation Fuel, especially at high altitude locations and during natural
    calamities.
  • Besides, the IOC was also lauded
    for its initiative in developing new designs for Bulk Petroleum Installation
    and Rubberised Fuel Tanks for Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) supplies on Advance
    Landing Grounds (ALGs) and helipads to support various contingencies.
  • The ATF DIP is a web based
    e-billing module. It was conceptualized by the Indian Air Force (IAF) in line
    with the Union Government’s flagship programme – Digital India.
  • It facilitates speedy accounting
    and the clearance of over 2 lakh aviation fuel bills of Oil Pubilc Sector
    Undertakings (PSUs).
  • The Aviation Turbine Fuel Digital
    Issue and Payment will be implemented from 01 April 2017.
  • It was jointly developed by the
    Controller General of Defence Accounts (DGCA) and the Indian Oil Corporation
    Limited (IOCL).

Integrated Automatic Aviation Meteorological Systems inaugurated at INS
Rajali

  • The Chief of the Indian Naval
    Staff Admiral Sunil Lamba inaugurated the first ever Integrated Automatic
    Aviation Meteorological System (IAAMS).
  • It was inaugurated on 28 March
    2017 at INS Rajali, which is informally known as Arakkonam Naval Air Station,
    in Tamil Nadu.
  • The IAAMS is an ambitious project
    of the Indian Navy to modernise the meteorological infrastructure of the nine
    Naval Air Stations (NAS).
  • Equipped with the state of the
    art Meteorological Sensors – Radar Vertical Wind Profiler, Transmissometer,
    Ceilometer and Automatic Weather Observation System, IAAMS undertakes automatic
    and continuous recording of relevant weather parameters that are vital for
    accurate weather forecasting.
INLCU L51 commissioned into Indian Navy

  • The INLCU L51 was commissioned
    into the Indian Navy on 28 March 2017.
  • The ship was commissioned by Vice
    Admiral Bimal Verma, AVSM, Commander-in-Chief, Andaman and Nicobar Command at
    Port Blair.
  • The LCU 51 is first of the eight
    ships of the LCU MK IV Class.
  • The vessel is built by M/s Garden
    Reach Ship Builders & Engineers Ltd, Kolkata.
  • The ship was conceived and
    designed indigenously.
  • With a displacement of 900 tons,
    the vessel spans 62.8 m in length and 11 m in breadth.
  • It is propelled by 02 MTU diesel
    engines of 1840 Kw rating and can sustain speeds up to 15 knots.
Union Government launches Online Film Certification System
E-Cinepramaan

  • Union Minister for Information
    and Broadcasting M Venkaiah Naidu on 27 March 2017 launched Online Film
    Certification System E-Cinepramaan of Central Board of Film Certification
    (CBFC) with an aim to promote transparency and ensure Clean Cinema Clean India.
  • This online system integrated the
    payments made by the producers towards certification fees with Bharatkosh
    portal, a system for all non-tax revenue receipts.
  • This online certification system
    will enable in making the CBFC Office paper less.
  • It will enable effective
    monitoring & real time progress in tracking for both CBFC Officials and the
    applicant.
  • In the e-cinepramaan, the status
    of each application will be visible online in the dashboard of the producer or
    the concerned CBFC official.
  • In case of short films and
    trailers which are of less than 10 minutes, the producer need not visit the
    office or theatre. They can submit their creations online.
Appointments –
United Nations appoints David Beasley to run World Food Programme

  • Antonio Guterres, the
    Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), appointed former South Carolina
    Governor David Beasley to run the World Food Programme (WFP).
  • The WFP executive board noted
    Beasley’s appointment in a letter to Guterres on 28 March 2017.
  • Beasley will replace Etharin
    Cousin, who has been serving as the Executive Director of the WFP since 2012.
  • Beasley was among 23 applications/nominations
    for the job.
Rana Kanwar Pal Singh elected as Speaker of Punjab Legislative Assembly

  • Rana Kanwar Pal Singh was on 27
    March 2017 elected as the Speaker of the Punjab Legislative Assembly. His name
    was proposed for the office by the Leader of the House and Chief Minister Capt
    Amarinder Singh.
  • Rana Kanwal Pal Singh, the
    59-year-old, is a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of Punjab.
  • In the 2017 general elections, he
    won as an MLA from the Anandpur Sahib electoral constituency.
Vanita Gupta appointed president of ‘Leadership Conference’

  • Indian-American Vanita Gupta was
    appointed as president and CEO of ‘The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human
    Rights’. With this, Gupta, who earlier headed civil rights division in the
    Department of Justice in the Obama Administration, also became the first woman
    to head the prestigious organisation.
  • In addition to this, Gupta will
    also lead its sister organisation ‘The Leadership Conference Education Fund’.
    Her role in the two organisations will begin on 1 June 2017.
  • Gupta, 41, will succeed Wade Henderson
    who is stepping down after more than two decades of service in the
    organisation.

FIFA suspended Lionel Messi for four matches

  • The FIFA Disciplinary Committee
    on 28 March 2017 suspended Argentina football player Lionel Messi for four
    matches. The committee reached the decision in application of articles 77 (a)
    and 108 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC).
  • Further, the committee took this
    decision as Messi was found at fault in relation to an incident during the
    match between Argentina and Chile on 23 March 2017.
  • In the qualifying competition for
    the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia, Lionel Messi directed insulting words at an
    assistant referee.
  • As a result, Messi was suspended
    for four official matches and sanctioned with a fine of CHF 10,000. The first
    match for which the sanction was applied was the preliminary competition of the
    2018 FIFA World Cup Russia, which was played between Bolivia and Argentina on
    28 March 2017.
  • The remainder of the sanction
    will be served over Argentina’s subsequent FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.
Ravichandran Ashwin receives Garfield Sobers Trophy

  • Ravichandran Ashwin on 28 March
    2017 was awarded the prestigious Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy in Dharamsala.
  • Ashwin was honoured with the
    trophy for being named the ICC Cricketer of the Year 2016.
  • With 48 wickets and 336 runs
    against his name in eight Tests, and 27 wickets in 19 Twenty20 Internationals
    during the voting period, Ashwin was a popular choice for the prestigious
    title.
  • With this, Ashwin has become the
    third Indian and the 12th player overall to win the award.
  • The award was judged by a voting
    academy, which was completely independent of the ICC. They panel took into
    consideration performances between 14 September 2015 and 20 September 2016.
    During this period, Ashwin produced some extraordinary all-round performances
    across all three formats of the game.
Satwiksairaj & Chirag won Vietnam Open International Challenger
Badminton Doubles title

  • Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and
    Chirag Shetty of India on 27 March 2017 won the USD 20,000 Vietnam Open
    International Challenger badminton title.
  • To win the title, the sixth
    seeded Indian pair defeated the fifth seeded Thai duo of Trawut Potieng and
    Nanthakam Yordphaisong in three games 17-21, 21-9, 21-15 at the summit clash in
    Hanoi, Vietnam.
  • For the young Indian pair, it was
    their maiden title this season, while fifth victory overall.
  • In the previous season, they had
    won the Mauritius International Series, the India International Series, the
    India International Challenge and the Bangladesh International Challenge.
Awards & Honors –
General Bipin Rawat conferred with title of Honorary General of
Nepalese Army

  • The Chief of the Army Staff
    General Bipin Rawat was on 29 March 2017 conferred with the title of Honorary
    General of the Nepalese Army during his official visit to Nepal and Bangladesh
    from 28 March 2017 to 2 April 2017.
  • This was his first foreign visit
    after assuming the office.
  • Earlier, General Rajendra
    Chettri, the Chief of the Nepalese Army, was conferred with the title of
    Honorary General of the Indian Army in February 2017 during his first visit to
    India after assuming office.
  • This tradition is a reciprocal
    arrangement to honour each other’s Army chiefs with the honorary titles. It has
    been continuing uninterruptedly since it began in 1969.
  • During his visit to Nepal and
    Bangladesh, General Rawat will be visiting several important military
    installations and will be meeting high-ranking dignitaries including the Prime
    Minister, Defence Minister and the Chief of the Army Staff.
President Pranab Mukherjee presents Dr. B. C. Roy National Awards

  • Pranab Mukherjee, the President
    of India, on 28 March 2017 presented Dr. B. C. Roy National Awards for the
    years 2014, 2015 and 2016 at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.
  • President Mukherjee also
    presented the Hari Om Ashram Alembic Research Awards for the years 2008, 2009,
    2010, 2014, 2015 and 2016.
World –
US Senate votes to approve Montenegro as NATO’s 29th member

  • The US Senate on 28 March 2017
    voted to approve Montenegro as the 29th member of the North Atlantic Treaty
    Organization (NATO).
  • The accession treaty for the
    small Balkan nation to join the transatlantic alliance was passed through a
    97-2 vote. Republicans Rand Paul and Mike Lee voted against the measure.
  • The move to add Montenegro as the
    29th member was backed by President Donald Trump.
  • As of now, 25 other NATO members
    have ratified Montenegro’s accession. The Netherlands and Spain have yet to do
    so.
  • However, Russia opposes
    Montenegro’s accession, calling it a “provocation” that would
    reinforce the pro-Western military alliance’s presence in the Balkans.
Obituaries –
Former Punjab minister Gurdev Singh Badal passes away

  • Gurdev Singh Badal, former Punjab
    minister and senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader passed away at Dayanand Medical
    College and Hospital in Ludhiana on March 28, 2017, following prolonged
    illness. He was 85.
  • According to cardiologist
    Vishwmohan, Gurdev was a chronic cardiac patient and he was admitted to the
    hospital on 9 March with multiple problems. He is survived by two sons and a
    daughter.
