Mandatory for All Employers Under Its Purview
- Retirement fund body EPFO today notified an order to make
Universal Account Number (UAN) mandatory for all employers covered under the
Employees Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act 1952. - The government was considering the proposal to make UAN
mandatory for availing of benefit of the scheme. The UAN facility was launched
by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in October last year. - The deadline for completing the formalities is August 25
after which action will be taken under the powers given to us by the Employees
Provident Funds Scheme, 1952, and other applicable laws for failure to comply
with the order. - The UAN remains portable throughout the lifetime of an
employee and they don’t have to apply for PF transfer claims at changing jobs. - It is even more beneficial for workers in the construction
sector, who often change their contractor after short span of time and take up
new jobs after fining one contract. - The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) had issued
over four crore UANs to employers across the country in July last year.

EU Launches
Mediterranean Migrant Miitary Mission
Mediterranean Migrant Miitary Mission
- EU foreign ministers formally approved today the launch of
the first phase of a military operation against people smugglers in the
Mediterranean, officials said. - The first ships and aircraft to conduct intelligence
gathering missions should be available within a week, officials said. - EU foreign affairs head Federica Mogherini said the
28-nation bloc had responded quickly to the crisis washing up on its southern
shores. - There have been serious differences among member states over
how to handle the thousands of migrants crossing the Mediterranean, with Italy,
Greece and Malta bearing the brunt of the burden until the loss of up to 800
people in April when their rickety boat sank and forced a re-think. - EU leaders agreed at an emergency summit that month to formulate
a comprehensive plan to tackle the problem at source, including a military
option to go after the people traffickers working out of Libya.
