• Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated the 46th
  Indian Labour Conference, asserting it was essential to respect the dignity of
  labour.
• With labour reforms facing stiff resistance from trade
  unions, Modi today said changes in the laws will be carried out through
  consensus and in consultation with them. He said “changes in the labour laws
  will be made with the concurrence of the unions and the consultation process
  will continue“.
• The government has set up a high-level inter-ministerial
  committee under Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to hold discussions with the
  unions on issues concerning labour. The committee held its first meeting
  yesterday during which a host of labour-related issues were discussed.
• Talking about different interest groups, Modi said that
  there was a thin line dividing the interest of industry and industrialists,
  government and nation, and labour and labour organisations.
• The Prime Minister also regretted that the number of
  apprentices in the country was very low and asked the industry to provide more
  opportunities to them with a view to increase their numbers from three lakh to
  at least 20 lakh.
• The number of apprentices in China is two crore, Japan one
  crore and Germany 30 lakh as against only three lakh in India, he said.

• Kerala Tourism’s Muziris Heritage Project (MHP) on 18 July
  2015 bagged the 2015 Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) award in the
  ‘Heritage & Culture’ category.
• The award was conferred on the Muziris heritage project for
  its conservational aspect, uniqueness, and impact on local community. It
  recognises the projects objective that is, restoring the historical and cultural
  significance of the ancient town that stretches across North Paravur in
  Ernakulam to Kodungalloor in Thrissur.
• Muziris heritage project, the flagship project of the State
  is one of the biggest heritage conservation projects of modern India.

• Hero Motors Group, which includes flagship company Hero
  Cycles, on Monday, said it has elevated Pankaj Munjal as its Chairman and
  Managing Director (CMD).
• Pankaj Munjal has taken over from O P Munjal, who led the
  Ludhiana-based company for more than 60 years, Hero Motors Group said in a
  statement.
• O P Munjal has now been elevated to the position of Chairman
  Emeritus, it added.
• The group comprises cycle major Hero Cycles, auto parts
  manufacturing companies —— Hero Motors Ltd, ZF Hero Chassis Systems and Munjal
  Kiriu Industries —— hospitality arm Munjal Hospitality and luxury home decor
  products company Oma Livings.
• Pankaj Munjal had joined the group as a trainee in 1988 and
  was appointed as its Co—Chairman and Managing Director in December 2011.
• Incorporated in 1956, Hero Cycles is the largest cycle
  manufacturer in the world. The company has a manufacturing capacity of 7.5
  million bicycles per year, with its unit in Ludhiana (Punjab), Bihta (Bihar)
  and Ghaziabad (UP).

• Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly was today named in the
  BCCI’s four-member working group formed to study the Justice R M Lodha
  committee’s order and give recommendations within six weeks.
• The committee will be chaired by IPL Chairman Rajeev Shukla
  and will have BCCI Secretary Anurag Thakur and Treasurer Aniruddh Chaudhary as
  the other members. BCCI’s legal adviser U N Banerjee will assist the panel.
• Announcing the names of the panel members, Shukla said the
  panel will study the implications of the Justice Lodha Committee report and
  draw up a roadmap for IPL 9, which will have a minimum of eight teams.
• The committee will have six weeks’ time to study the Lodha
  committee report and will give its recommendations after talking to all the
  stakeholders.

• Amelie Mauresmo, the two-time Grand Slam winner and former
  number one tennis player of France, was on 18 July 2015 inducted into the International
  Tennis Hall of Fame.
• Mauresmo was unable to travel to the ceremony on Bill
  Talbert Center Court at the Hall of Fame because she’s in her third trimester
  of pregnancy.

• Nelson Mandela International Day was observed across the
  world on 18 July 2015 to honour the former South African President and Nobel
  Peace Prize laureate Nelson Mandela (1918-2013).
• The overarching objective of the Mandela Day is to inspire
  individuals to take action to help change the world for the better, and in
  doing so build a global movement for good.
• For the first time the day was celebrated on 18 July 2010 as
  per a UN General Assembly resolution of November 2009.

• Alex Rocco, the gravelly-voiced actor whose gallery of
  memorable characters included Moe Greene, the cocky, bespectacled Las Vegas
  casino owner in The Godfather, has died. He was 79.
• Rocco died on Saturday at his home in the Studio City
  neighbourhood of Los Angeles. The cause was cancer, his manager, Susan Zachary,
  said, reported New York Times.
• Rocco had fairly limited screen time in The Godfather
  (1972), but he emerged from that film with a collection of signature lines,
  including “You don’t buy me out. I buy you out” and “Do you know
  who I am?” (both spoken to the Godfather-in-waiting, played by Al Pacino),
  and a Hollywood reputation for stealing scenes with little more than a Boston
  attitude and his eyebrows.
• In 1990 he won an Emmy Award for his role as a
  larger-than-life old-school talent agent in the well-reviewed but short-lived
  Jon Cryer sitcom The Famous Teddy Z.
• Rocco’s other noteworthy films included The Friends of Eddie
  Coyle (1973), with Robert Mitchum; Freebie and the Bean (1974), one of several
  projects he did with Alan Arkin; Tom Hanks’s That Thing You Do! (1996), as a
  fast-talking music executive; “The Wedding Planner” (2001), as
  Jennifer Lopez’s old-fashioned father; and A Bug’s Life (1998), as the voice of
  the grumpy grain-counting ant Thorny.
