  1. India and Myanmar on 19 October 2016 signed three agreements to boost the
    bilateral relations between the two nations
    . Keeping in view the
    sensitivity of each other’s strategic interests, the two nations also agreed
    for close security coordination in border areas.
  2. The Telangana Government has signed a
    memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Government
    of Illinois State
    for collaboration and interaction between the two
    States in various fields in the form of sharing expertise.
  3. The Union Government in the second week of October 2016 has formally granted a licence to BP Plc to set up 3500 petrol pumps in India.
  4. Water Jet Fast Attack Craft (WJFAC) INS
    Tihayu
    was commissioned into the
    Indian Navy
    by the Flag-Officer-Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval
    Command Vice-Admiral H.C.S. Bisht, here on Wednesday.
  5. S P Yadav on 18 October 2016 was elected the new President of the North Zone of Urology
    Society of India (NZUSI).
    His tenure would begin from October 2017 for a
    period of one year.
  6. Kigeli V Ndahindurwa, the last king of Rwanda,
    passed away on 16 October 2016 in Virginia, U.S

Finance/Economy –
India, Myanmar signed 3 MoUs including Cooperation in the field of
Power Sector

  • India and Myanmar on 19 October
    2016 signed three agreements to boost the bilateral relations between the two
    nations. Keeping in view the sensitivity of each other’s strategic interests,
    the two nations also agreed for close security coordination in border areas.
  • The MoUs were inked in New Delhi
    after delegation level talks with the visiting State Counsellor of Myanmar Aung
    San Suu Kyi. Suu Kyi was on a three day visit to India.

Agreements inked includes
  1. MoU for designing an academic and
    professional building programme for insurance industry of Myanmar. The MoU was
    signed between Financial Regulatory Department of Myanmar and Insurance
    Institute of India.
  2. MoU on Cooperation in the field
    of Power Sector: India has also offered to enhance power supply from Moreh in
    Manipur to Tamu in Myanmar.
  3. MoU on Banking Supervision
    between RBI and Central Bank of Myanmar.

Besides, the two countries also
agreed to enhance engagement in several areas like to develop a mutually
beneficial arrangement for trade in pulses. India also said that the
Archaeological Survey of India will soon begin work on restoring two old
temples and inscriptions of King Mindon and King Baygyidaw in Bodh Gaya.
Telangana inks MoU with Illinois

  • The Telangana Government has
    signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Government of Illinois
    State for collaboration and interaction between the two States in various
    fields in the form of sharing expertise.
  • The agreement was signed by
    Principal Secretary (Industries and Commerce) Arvind Kumar on behalf of
    Telangana and Secretary of Innovation & Technology and Chief Information
    Officer Hardik Bhatt on behalf of Illinois at Chicago on Monday.
  • Telangana Minister for Industries
    and IT K. Taraka Rama Rao and Consulate General of India in Chicago Dr. Ausaf
    Sayeed were present at the event. The MoU was signed as part of Mr. Rama Rao’s
    second leg of business visit to the USA to promote Telangana and attract
    investments to the State. According to officials, the agreement would
    facilitate cooperation in the areas of Smart State Solutions, e-Governance,
    entrepreneurship, innovation, business incubators, job creation and best
    practices between the two States. Under the Smart State solutions, Illinois
    State would introduce “Array of Things” sensors for air pollution monitoring in
    Telangana.
  • The two States would also share
    best practices, tools and processes for disaster/emergency management, data
    management, data analytics, open data and Intelligent Transportation Systems.

Union Government grants BP Plc licence to set up petrol pumps in India
  • The Union Government in the
    second week of October 2016 has formally granted a licence to BP Plc to set up
    3500 petrol pumps in India.
  • The company was granted a formal
    licence on 14 October 2016. It was granted licence to market Motor Spirit
    (petrol) and High Speed Diesel (diesel). With this, BP became the 10th company
    to enter the fuel retailing sector.
  • BP plc is a British multinational
    oil and gas company headquartered in London, England.

India –
INS Tihayu commissioned
  • Water Jet Fast Attack Craft
    (WJFAC) INS Tihayu was commissioned into the Indian Navy by the
    Flag-Officer-Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command Vice-Admiral H.C.S.
    Bisht, here on Wednesday.
  • The 315-tonne INS Tahiyu is the
    sixth WJFAC Car Nicobar Class vessel to be commissioned and allotted to the
    Eastern Fleet of the Navy.
  • According to Vice-Admiral Bisht,
    four of the vessels are based in Chennai and two, including Tahiyu, will be
    stationed in Visakhapatnam.
  • Built by Kolkata-based shipyard
    Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), INS Tahiyu is the 20th vessel
    in this class to be built by the shipyard.
  • It is an improved version of the
    earlier vessels and it can achieve a top operating speed of 35 knots per hour,
    said the Chairman and Managing Director of GRSE Rear Admiral (retd) A.K. Verma.

UK group signs healthcare MoU with Indian company
  • A health care group based in
    northeast England today said it had signed an MoU with a leading Indian health
    care provider to share expertise in integrated medical care.
  • Northumbria Healthcare NHS
    Foundation Trust and Northumberland County Council (Northumbria) signed the MoU
    with Indo-UK Healthcare Pvt Ltd (IUHP) in support of the Indo-UK Institute of
    Health (IUIH) programme.
  • The IUIH programme is one of the
    world’s largest health care initiatives currently underway, aimed at transforming
    the provision of quality healthcare and medical education services across
    India.
  • It will deliver a staged rollout
    linked to the Indian government’sSmart City programme across 100 cities and
    will involve the setting up of 11 Indo UK Institute of Health Medicities along
    with 89 Indo UK Clinics across the 100 smart cities.

S P Yadav elected new President of North Zone of Urology Society of
India
  • S P Yadav on 18 October 2016 was
    elected the new President of the North Zone of Urology Society of India
    (NZUSI). His tenure would begin from October 2017 for a period of one year.
  • The announcement was made at the
    conclusion of a three-day annual conference held under the auspices of the Agra
    Urology Association from 16 October to 18 October 2016.

Obituaries –
Kigeli V Ndahindurwa, last king of Rwanda, dies

  • Kigeli V Ndahindurwa, the last
    king of Rwanda, passed away on 16 October 2016 in Virginia, U.S. He was 80.
  • King Kigeli V came to power in
    1959 but was only king of Rwanda until 1961, when the monarchy was abolished
    and he was forced into exile.
  • King Kigeli V eventually settled
    in the United States where he set up a charity helping Rwandan refugees and
    orphans.
