Cabinet approves MoU between
India and Philippines on agriculture

  • The Union Cabinet on 10 November
    2017 gave its approval for signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between
    India and Philippines on agriculture and related fields.
  • The cabinet was chaired by Prime
    Minister Narendra Modi. The MoU is expected to improve bilateral cooperation in
    the field of agriculture, mutually benefiting both India and Philippines.
  • The MoU will promote
    understanding of best agricultural practices in the two countries, which will
    in turn help achieve better productivity along with improved global market
  • Under the agreement, the two
    countries would be cooperating in the field of rice production and processing,
    multi cropping system, dryland farming systems, bio-organic farming, solid and
    water conservation and management, soil fertility, sericulture, agro forestry
    and livestock improvement.
  • The agreement also provides for
    the established of a Joint Working Group, which will comprise equal number of
    representatives from both the nations.

Cabinet approves creation of
National Testing Agency to conduct entrance examinations

  • The Union Cabinet chaired by
    Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 10 November 2017 approved creation of National
    Testing Agency (NTA) as an autonomous, self-sustained organisation to conduct
    entrance examinations for higher educational institutions.
  • The cabinet approved creation of
    the agency as a society registered under the Indian Societies Registration Act
    1860. To start off, the agency will be given a one-time grant of Rs 25 Cr from
    the Union Government.
  • The agency would initially
    conduct the entrance examinations that are currently being conducted by the

    up gradually after NTA is fully geared up.
  • The entrance examinations will be
    conducted online at least twice a year, thereby giving adequate opportunity to candidates
    to bring out their best.
  • The agency would also locate
    centres at sub-district/district level in order to serve the requirements of
    the rural students.
Significance of the NTA

  • The establishment of the agency
    is expected to benefit around 40 lakh students appearing in various entrance
  • It will relieve CBSE, AICTE and
    other agencies from responsibility of conducting these entrance examinations.
NTA Members

  • The agency will be chaired by an
    eminent educationist appointed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development.
  • It will also have a CEO/ Director
    General, who will be appointed by the Union Government.
The Director General will be
assisted by 9 verticals headed by academicians/ experts.
World Science Day for Peace and
Development 2017 observed globally

  • The World Science Day for Peace
    and Development was observed across the world on 10 November 2017 with the
    theme ‘ Science for Global Understanding’.
  • The day highlights the
    significant role of science in society and the need to engage public in debates
    on emerging scientific issues. It also underlines the importance and relevance of
    science in our daily lives.
  • The World Science Day for Peace
    and Development was proclaimed by the UNESCO General Conference through its
    Resolution 31C/ 20 in 2001. The Day is celebrated all over the world to
    consider the commitment made at the UNESCO-ICSU World Conference on Science
    (Budapest 1999).
  • The Day aims to renew the
    national and international commitment to science for peace and development and
    to stress the responsible use of science for the benefit of society.
RedBus co-founder Phanindra Sama
named Telangana’s Chief Innovation Officer

  • The Telangana Government has
    appointed Phanindra Sama, who Co-Founded bus ticketing company RedBus and
    serial entrepreneur, as Chief Innovation Officer of the State.
  • A South African investment firm
    had acquired RedBus for about Rs. 780 crore. After the successful exit,
    Phanindra Sama has been working with start-ups and overseeing the activities of
    Kakatiya Sandbox in Nizamabad.
  • Phanindra received the formal
    appointment letter from Telangana IT and Industries Minister KT Rama Rao at
    Secretariat on Friday.
  • Phanindra will head the State’s
    Innovation Cell, which aims at promoting innovation at the grass root level,
    catching the school children in rural areas very young.
