SIWI organized 2019 World water week observed in Stockholm

  • Week-long conference on global water issues the 2019 World Water Week organised by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) observed in Stockholm, Sweden from 25 to 30 August.
  • The theme is Water for society – Including all.
  • Dr Jackie King was awarded 2019 Stockholm Water Prize Laureate during the conference for her contribution to global river management.

World Suicide Prevention Day 2019 is observed on 10 September

  • World Suicide Prevention Day 2019 is observed on 10 September every year.
  • The day aims to raise awareness of the risks of suicide and to fund suicide prevention activities. It also aims to provide worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicides.
  • THEME: Working Together to Prevent Suicide
  • The Day was initiated by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH). The day is being observed since 2003.

RBI to launch a mobile app to aid the visually impaired

  • Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is to implement the idea to develop a mobile application with an aim to help the visually impaired people to identify currency notes.
  • For this, RBI has selected Daffodil Pvt Ltd.
  • Features of the app as per RBI guidelines:
  • The application should be able to identify the denomination of legal tender banknotes of Mahatma Gandhi Series and Mahatma Gandhi (New) series by capturing the image of the notes that are placed in front of the mobile camera or scrolled across it.
  • The mobile application should be searchable via voice option in all app stores.
  • The mobile application should be able to identify the banknote denomination in 2 seconds or less.
  • It shall provide multilingual support as well as audio notification.

PNB puts up 11 NPA accounts for sale to recover dues of Rs 1,234 crores

  • Punjab National Bank, a government-run put up for sale nearly a dozen Non Performing Assets (NPA) to recover dues of over Rs 1,234 crore.
  • The bank invited bids from Asset Reconstruction Companies (ARCs)/ NBFCs/ banks/ financial institutions for 11 NPA accounts.
  • The PNB given in-principle approval for amalgamation of Oriental Bank of Commerce and United Bank of India with the lander.

SBI cuts lending rates 10 bps

  • SBI announced its fifth-rate cut on its marginal cost of funds based lending rate by 10 basis points (bps) across all tenors.
  • The interest rate is now 8.15%. It will be effective from 10 September 2019.
  • The reduction in the lending rate is expected to profit all the current SBI clients who have a home, auto and other category loans of MCLR.
  • SBI has also reduced term deposit (TD) rates by up to 25 basis points.
  • The aim of the rate cut is for boosting credit requests in the festival season.

UK Sinha committee recommends Telangana startup policy for startups in other states

  • Reserve Bank of India (RBI) backed UK Sinha committee has recommended that Telangana’s innovative model for start-ups should be assessed for possible replication in other states.
  • UK Sinha, the former Chairman of SEBI, led committee submitted its report in June.

IPPB launched AePS services

  • India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) rolled out Aadhaar enabled payment system (AePS) services.
  • IPPB become the single largest platform in the country for providing interoperable banking services to the customers of any bank.
  • The AePS services linked to Aadhaar can perform basic banking services such as cash withdrawals and balance inquiry irrespective of the bank
  • The launch of AePS by India Post Payments Bank enhances the last mile interoperable banking infrastructure by 2.5 times.

PM Modi to address Annual UNGA session

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi is to address the 74th annual high-level UN General Assembly (UNGA) session on 27 September 2019.
  • He will also be holding a series of bilateral and multilateral discussion with his counterparts.
  • On September 22, he will visit Houston where he will address the Howdy, Modi!, the Indian-American community summit. The summit is to be hosted by Texas India Forum.
  • PM Modi will also be hosting a special event Leadership Matters: Relevance of Gandhi in the Contemporary World on September 24 in the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Chamber in New York, USA.

PM inaugurated AURIC

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Aurangabad Industrial City (AURIC), India’s first industrial smart city, in Aurangabad, Maharashtra.
  • The programme aims to boost the Government of India’s Smart Cities programme.
  • PM Modi inaugurated Auric hall.
  • AURIC is India’s first greenfield smart city. Aurangabad has been planned to be the new benchmark of industrial progress. It is situated in the underdeveloped Marathwada region.
  • The 10,000-acre big AURIC is a part of the under-construction Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC).
  • The city is being promoted as a major industrial hub on the DMIC.

Centre to invest USD 130 bn for fleet modernization

  • The government has planned to introduce a mega plan to spend $130 billion for fleet modernization in the next 5-7 years across all armed forces.
  • The government aims to speed up the modernization of the Army, Navy and the Air Force.

DPIIT to Launch Plastic Waste Management Campaign for Swachhta Hi Sewa 2019

  • The theme of this year’s Swachhta hi Sewa is Plastic Waste Management. Department for Promotion of Industry & Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce & Industry is playing a critical two-fold role for the success of the campaign as mandated by the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Ministry of Jal Shakti.
  • DPIIT will ensure recycling of plastic waste collected on 2nd October 2019.

Prime Minister to Launch Kisan Man Dhan Yojana on the 12th of September

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Kisan Maan Dhan Yojana on the 12th of September at Ranchi, Jharkhand.
  • The Scheme shall secure the lives of 5 Crore Small and Marginal Farmers by providing a minimum pension of Rs 3000 per month to attain 60 years of age.
  • The scheme has an outlay of Rs 10,774 Crores for the next three years.
  • The small and marginal farmers who are currently between the ages of 18 to 40 years can apply for the scheme.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi shall inaugurate 400 Eklavya Model Residential Schools to provide quality upper primary, secondary, and senior secondary level education to ST Students in Tribal dominated areas.
  • The New Jharkhand Vidhan Sabha Building and lay the foundation stone for the New Secretariat Building at Ranchi.
  • He inaugurates the Multi-Modal Terminal at Sahebganj.

Union Minister of State for Culture Shri Prahlad Singh Patel inaugurates the exhibition PRA-KASHI on finest trends of contemporary weaving

  • Union Minister of State for Culture and Tourism (Independent Charge), Shri Prahlad Singh Patel inaugurated the exhibition PRA-KASHI in New Delhi.
  • The National Museum, New Delhi in collaboration with Devi Art Foundation, New Delhi organized this exhibition.
  • The exhibition will remain open for general public till 8th October 2019 between 10 am to 6 pm.

PM of St.Vincent and Grenadines visits India

  • Prime Minister of St. Vincent and Grenadines Dr.Hon’ble Ralph Everard Gonsalves met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his 5-day visit to India.
  • PM Gonsalves also participated in the high-level United Nations Convention on Combating Desertification (UNCCD) Symposium held at New Delhi.

PM Narendra Modi launches National Animal Disease Control Programme

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched the National Animal Disease Control Programme in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura.
  • The programme aims at vaccinating over 500 Million livestock including cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats and pigs against foot and mouth disease.
  • The programme also aims at vaccinating 36 million female bovine calves annually in its fight against Brucellosis disease.
  • The government will fund the programme for Rs 12,652 crore for a period of 5 years till 2024. The programme has two components: to control the diseases by 2025 and eradication by 2030.

Two UTs J&K, Ladakh will have a common high court

  • State Judicial Academy of Jammu & Kashmir said that J&K and Ladakh will become two separate Union territories (UTs) from 31 October but it will have a common high court.
  • This order was issued by the State Judicial Academy’s Director Rajeev Gupta.

Kerala to introduce iWTC in Kozhikode

  • For the first time ever, the Kerala State government is to set up India’s first International Women’s Trade Centre (iWTC) in Kozhikode.
  • It is in consonance with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • iWTC aims to boost women entrepreneurship and secure gender parity by providing women a safe place away from home to start new businesses.

World’s highest marathon was held in Ladakh

  • The eighth edition of Ladakh Marathon was held in Leh town, Jammu Kashmir.
  • More than 6,000 runners from different parts of India and 25 foreign countries participated in the marathon.

Chandrayaan 2 Lander has been located in Moon

  • Chandrayaan-2’s Lander module Vikram has been located on the lunar surface.
  • The Lander was located by the image sent captured by the on-board camera of Chandrayaan-2 orbiter.
  • The image also showed that rover Pragyan is housed inside it.
  • The Indian space agency also said the data that was received is being analyzed.

  • He was 95 years old.
  • He was suffering from prolonged illness.

Tamil actor, cinematographer and director Rajasekar passes away

  • Tamil Film Director, Actor and Cinematographer Raja Sekar passed away. He was a part of the director duo Robert-Rajasekar.
  • Along with Robert Ashirwatham, he had directed films such as Palaivanacholai, Chinnapoove Mella Pesu, Dhooram Adhigamillai, Manasukkul Mathappu and Paravaigal Palavidham.
