Russian Language Day observed every year on 6 June

  • UnitedNations celebrates Russian Language Day every year on 6 June to raise awareness of the history, culture and development of each of the six official languages ​​of the UN: Arabic, Russian, Spanish, Chinese, English and French.

  • “Summer Treats” campaign has been launched by the private sector HDFC Bank.
  • The special campaign has been launched by the bank with the easing of the lockdown restrictions in order to provide offers to both merchants and, salaried and self-employed customers.
  • Under the “Summer Treats” campaign, bank will offer no cost EMI and no down payment for large appliances.
  • It will also offer discounts and cashbacks on select brands along with 50% extra reward points on online spend using credit cards.

EESL, USAID launched Healthy and Energy Efficient Buildings

  • State-run Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) has partnered with US Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Market Integration and Transformation Program for Energy Efficiency (MAITREE) program and launched ‘Healthy and Energy Efficient Buildings’ initiative.
  • The initiative is a part of the US-India bilateral Partnership between the Power Ministry of India and USAID.

Healthy and Energy Efficient Buildings:

  • Healthy and Energy Efficient Buildings initiative aims to make workplaces healthier and greener.
  • The initiative aims to accelerate the adoption of cost-effective energy efficiency measures as a standard practice within buildings, and specifically focuses on cooling.
  • Under the initiative, EESL has become the first to implement the framework in its own offices.
  • This initiative will address air quality and energy use concerns in buildings like directly improving comfort, health, productivity, and ultimately the quality of life of citizens in India and South Asia.

Centre launches ‘#iCommit’ initiative to promote clean energy and smart energy use

  • The initiative call upon all stakeholders and individuals to continue moving towards energy efficiency, renewable energy, and sustainability to create a robust and resilient energy system for India in the future.
  • The ‘#iCommit’ initiative will be implemented by the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), under the administration of Ministry of Power, Government of India.

Ministry of Urban Affairs releases advisories on Waste Management

  • The Ministry of Urban Affairs released series of advisories on Effective waste management.
  • The advisories were issued as a part of World Environment Day celebration.
  • The Government of India has been giving utmost important to waste management through Swachh Bharat Mission as well.

Nitin Gadkari launches campaign on ‘Prevention of Human and Animal Mortality on Highways’

  • The Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways and MSME, Nitin Gadkari launched the UNDP and MoRTH national awareness campaign on ‘Prevention of Human and Animal Mortality on Highways’ through a video conference on June 5, 2020.
  • At the launch, the union minister underlined the need to generate awareness and education for the masses that aims at reducing mortality on the roads, he also mentioned that the sustainability and ecology are most important for the human life.
  • The minister informed that India has witnessed nearly 5 lakh road accidents every year, out of which about 1.5 lakh lives are lost.
  • He indicated that economy, ethics, and ecology are the three most important pillars of India.

Measures:

  • The GoI has taken several road safety measures to reduce accidents.
  • This includes Rectification of Black spots, Crash barriers, Traffic barriers, road safety audit, rehabilitation and reconstruction of narrow bridges and highway patrolling.
  • The GoI has also spent good amounts in creating infrastructure that is safer to animals
  • The Nagpur-Jabalpur Highway is one such example.

India announces its priorities for UNSC

  • India is expected to be elected as member of United Nations Security Council for an eighth term.
  • In order to secure the elected seat, India has launched a brochure that lists the priorities of India at the UNSC.

  • The brochure was released by the External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.
  • The brochure has set out five key priorities.
  • They are new opportunities for progress, reforming the multilateral system, effective response to international terrorism, comprehensive approach to international peace and promoting technologies with human touch.

  • The scientists and researchers at the Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences operating under Department of Science and Technology have invented a low cost effective way to generate hydrogen from water using Molybdenum dioxide.

Highlights:

  • The study says that Molybdenum dioxide can act as efficient catalyst to reduce energy used in splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen.
  • The researchers grew Molybdenum Dioxide on tin oxide substrates.
  • The process is called electrolysis.
  • Molybdenum Dioxide has the potential to replace the catalyst that is being used currently, that is, Platinum. Platinum is highly expensive and also is available as limited resource on the earth.

Significance:

  • The splitting of water is important to obtain hydrogen. Hydrogen is lately becoming a popular clean fuel.
  • Hydrogen is predominantly used to make fuel cells.
  • In a fuel cell, the chemical energy, that is hydrogen is converted into electricity.

  • Bollywood producer Anil Suri passed away due to COVID-19.
  • He was renowned for producing bollywood films such as Raaj Kumar-Rekha starrer Karmayogi and Raaj Tilak.
  • In 1991, he also directed a movie titled “Begunaah starring Rajesh Khanna, Farah Naaz and Jeetendra.

Senior BJP leader Chandrakanta Goyal died in Mumbai

  • Senior BJP leader Chandrakanta Goyal, mother of Railway Minister Piyush Goyal, died at her residence in Mumbai due to old age.
  • She was 88.
  • Chandrakanta Goyal was a corporator in Mumbai for one term after the Emergency. Later, she represented the BJP from the Matunga Assembly constituency in Mumbai for three terms.

  • Former Indian footballer Hamza Koya has died of COVID-19 in Kerala, taking the death toll due to COVID-19 in the State to 15.
  • The 61 year old Hamza Koya succumbed to COVID-19 today morning.
  • He was a former football player who had represented Maharashtra at the Santhosh Trophy and also  an India team member in Nehru trophy.
