Objective:

Rs 1810 crore Luhri Hydro Power Project approved

  • The Union Cabinet chaired by PM Modi approved the Rs 1810 crore investment proposal of 210 MW of Luhri Stage I Hydro Power Project.
  • The hydro power project is to be constructed on River Sutlej.
  • The project will generate 758.2 million units of electricity annually.
  • The project is to be implemented by the Sutlej Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited.
  • It is to be implemented in Build-Own-Operate-Maintain mode

Centre launches initiative to nurture family-friendly cities

  • Union minister for housing and urban affairs Hardeep Singh Puri launched the Nurturing Neighbourhoods Challenge, which focuses on shaping cities for young children and their families.
  • It aimed at ensuring the development of common spaces along with the creation of data banks for better planning in smart cities.
  • Puri also launched the Data Maturity Assessment Framework (DMAF) to evaluate data ecosystems of cities and an online training programme for city data officers of smart cities.

Cabinet approved MoU between India and Spain in Astronomy

  • The Union Cabinet chaired by PM Modi approved the Memorandum of Understanding signed between India and Spain.
  • The MoU will facilitate scientific and technical collaborations between the countries in the field of Astronomy.
  • The MoU was signed between the Instituto de Astrofiscia de Canarias of Spain and the Indian Institute of Astrophysics.
  • The joint research training, projects, programmes, seminars and conferences are to be opened to all scientists under the programme.

GoI forms Committee to review Television Rating System

  • The other three members of the committee include Rajkumar Upadhyaya (Executive Director of C-Dot), Dr Shalabh, Professor of Statistics from IIT Kanpur and Professor Pulak Ghosh of Decision Sciences Centre for Public Policy.

ADB approves USD 132.8 mn loan to improve power distribution network in Meghalaya

  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved USD 132.8 million loan to Meghalaya, to improve and upgrade the power distribution network in the state.
  • The fund will help in improving the distribution system & financial sustainability of the Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited (MePDCL).
  • The MePDCL has a huge outstanding against the power purchased from central power generating stations and to the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL).
  • The loan loan will support in clearing the power outstanding dues.

Assam Education Dept launches toll free tele-education helpline number for govt school students

  • In Assam, the Education department has launched a toll free tele education helpline number for government school students.
  • Principal Secretary of the department B Kalyan Chakravarthy said the helpline number is to guide 6th to 10th standard students on subject matters and psycho-social aspects.
  • The tollfree no is – 18003453578. Mr. Chakravarthy said that it would work on all 6 days in week except Sunday from 10 am to 3 pm.

West Bengal announces several initiatives for SC and ST people in the state

  • The West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced a number of initiatives for the Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and refugee population.
  • This included land pattas and setting up of cultural and development boards.
  • The initiatives have included all the refugees in the colonies spread across the state. Around 1,25,000 land pattas are to be provided.
  • The State Government will also provide 25,000 land pattas to the refugees.
  • Rs 10 cores has been allocated to the newly announced Matua Development Board. Matuas are Dalit refuges from Bangladesh.
  • They are spread over 50 Assembly seats in the State of West Bengal.

New land laws in J & K

  • Government notifies new Land rules that allow any Indian citizen to buy land in Jammu & Kashmir. Indian citizens can now buy land in J&K (Jammu and Kashmir).
  • Union government notified new land laws for Jammu and Kashmir, ending the abrogated Article 370 and presently, common people and investors outside Jammu & Kashmir can purchase land in the region of J&K.
  • This notification ended the exclusive rights of locals of Jammu and Kashmir over the land granted under Article 370.
  • The new Jammu and Kashmir Development Act rejected the ‘being a permanent resident of the State’ as criteria to purchase land.

  • The “Go Electric” campaign was launched by Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) in coordination with the Andhra Pradesh State Energy Conservation Mission.
  • The Andhra Pradesh State Government is to set up 400 Electric Vehicle charging vehicles all over the state to promote the usage of electric vehicles.
  • This is to be achieved in coordination with the “Go Electric” campaign of BEE.
  • The main of the step is to attract investment in the EV sector by setting up charging stations and electric vehicle infrastructure.

  • Election Commission of India is organizing a three-day International Virtual Election Visitors Programme for Foreign Election Management Bodies and Organizations in the context of the ongoing Bihar Legislative Assembly Elections.

  • Available in two variants, Paytm SBI Card and Paytm SBI Card SELECT, the product has been launched on the Visa platform.
  • It aims to empower users to control their cards through smart one tap features on their Paytm app itself.
  • Paytm SBI Cards will be equipped with instant one-touch services such as blocking/ unblocking the card for online transactions, blocking the card in case of loss, issuance of a duplicate card and viewing outstanding credit-limit.
  • It will also offer the option to safeguard users against fraud by switching off the card for contactless payments or international transactions when not required.

  • This enhanced version of the Pinaka rocket would replace the existing Pinaka Mk-I rockets.
  • While Mk-1 had a range of 40 km, the new variant can hit a target 45 to 60 km away.

  • They covered a distance of over 3700 nautical miles with three in-flight refuellings.

Kannada Actor HG Somashekar Rao passes away

  • Veteran Kannada theatre and film actor HG Somashekar Rao has passed away in Bengaluru following a heart attack. He was 86.
  • Somashekar had appeared in more than 60 movies during his career spanning about five decades. He made his big screen debut with 1975 Kannada film Geejagana Goodu.
