  35. Veteran social activist Prof Pushpa Bhave, also known as the Iron Lady of Mumbai, has passed away following a prolonged illness. She was 81.

World Postcard Day observed on 01 October

  • The first ever World Postcard Day was celebrated on October 1, 2020.
  • The goal for the World Postcard Day is to bring that joy to as many people as possible.

World Day for Farmed Animals observed on 02 October

  • Every Year since 1983, the World Day for Farmed Animals (WDFA) is observed on 2nd October, which marks the birth anniversary of the Mahatma Gandhi.
  • The day is organised by the International animals’ welfare organization, World Animal Protection along with the Asia for Animals coalition to show the importance and urgency of farm animal welfare.
  • The day is dedicated to exposing the needless suffering and death of farmed animals who are raised and slaughtered for food.

World Animal Day observed on 04 October

  • The World Animal Day is observed annually on October 4 since 1929.
  • The day aims to raise the status of animals in order to improve welfare standards around the globe.
  • It was originated by Heinrich Zimmermann and he organized the first World Animal Day on 24 March 1925 at the Sport Palace in Berlin, Germany.
  • The event was moved to 4 October for the first time in 1929.

World Space Week observed on 04-10 October

  • The World Space Week (WSW) is observed from October 4 to 10 every year to celebrate science and technology, and their contribution towards the betterment of the human condition.
  • WSW was declared by the United Nations General Assembly on December 6, 1999.
  • The 2020 theme is “Satellites Improve Life.”
  • The dates commemorate the launch of the first artificial satellite, Sputnik I, on 4 October 1957 and the entry into force of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies on 10 October 1967.

World Teachers’ Day observed on 05 October

  • World Teachers’ Day, also known as International Teachers Day, is held annually on October 5 since 1994.
  • World Teachers’ Day aims to focus on appreciating, assessing and improving the educators of the world and to provide an opportunity to consider issues related to teachers and teaching.
  • The Theme for 2020 International Teachers Day is “Teachers: Leading in crisis, reimagining the future”.

RBI approves appointment of CoD to run Dhanlaxmi Bank till appointment of CEO

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved a three-member interim committee of directors (CoD), to run the private sector lender, Dhanlaxmi Bank, in the capacity of the Managing Director & CEO till a new MD & CEO takes charge.
  • This decision was taken after the shareholders voted out the bank’s MD and CEO Sunil Gurbaxani on 30 September 2020.
  • The committee of directors (CoD) has G Subramonia Iyer as its Chairman, while G Rajagopalan Nair and P K Vijayakumar are its other two members.
  • However, RBI has approved this interim arrangement for only four months, within which the bank will have to complete the process of identification and appointment of a new Managing Director & CEO.

Indian Bank launches Rupay Kisan credit card scheme for TN fishermen

  • Indian Bank has introduced a Kisan credit card loan scheme for fishermen in Tamil Nadu.
  • The features of the scheme include the availability of revolving credit up to ₹2 lakh, 7 per cent interest rate, interest subvention of 3 per cent for those who repay the loan within a period of one year.
  • The loan can be renewed once in a year. There is no restriction on the number of credit and debit transactions.
  • This loan will be provided under Mudra scheme.
  • Borrowers will get Rupay Kisan Credit Card and beneficiaries can use the card to withdraw money from ATMs, BC (banking correspondent) points, and also make purchase through merchant POS.

Arjun Munda E-Launches Tribal Entrepreneurship Development Programme of M/o Tribal Affairs in Partenership with Assocham

  • The Union Minister of Tribal Affairs Shri Arjun Munda inaugurated the Tribal Entrepreneurship Development Programme on 2nd October 2020 through Video conference.
  • The Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Tribal Entrepreneurship Development has been set up by apex industry body Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) under its Centre for Excellence Initiative
  • The Tribal Entrepreneurship Development Programme is a three-year initiative that will be jointly implemented by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and ASSOCHAM.
  • Through this Centre of Excellence, value addition, technology advance and marketing of tribal products would be facilitated to the tribal communities in a more effective and efficient manner.
  • The initiative will optimize the contribution of tribal population to the growing economy of the country and support India’s vision of becoming Atmanirbhar.

Prime Minister Modi dedicates to the Nation the Atal Tunnel in Himachal Pradesh

  • The Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi dedicated to the nation Atal Tunnel, on 3rd October 2020.
  • Atal Tunnel is world’s longest highway tunnel above 10,000 feet from the Mean Sea Level (MSL).
  • The tunnel has been named after former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
  • Atal tunnel has been built, by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), under the Rohtang Pass in the eastern Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas on the Leh-Manali Highway in Himachal Pradesh.
  • The total length of the tunnel is 9.02 km, and at an elevation of 3,100 metres (10,171 ft).
  • The overall cost of completion of the project is around 3200 crore.

Govt of India launches 100-day campaign under Jal Jeevan Mission

  • The government of India launched 100-day campaign under Jal Jeevan Mission to supply piped water supply to schools and Anganwadi centres.
  • This campaign was launched on the occasion of 151st birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
  • Jal Jeevan Ministry also conferred Swachh Bharat Awards in which Gujarat state secured the top position.
  • The Main aim of this campaign is to provide potable piped water supply in Schools and Anganwadi Centres.
  • Through this campaign, the States and Union Territories will ensure that Gram Sabha are convened at the earliest in order to pass the resolution to provide safe water in schools and Anganwadi centres.

SAIL supplies more than 9000 tonnes of steel for the world’s longest tunnel ‘Atal tunnel’

  • The Steel Authority of India (SAIL) has supplied 9,000 tonnes of steel required to build the tunnel.
  • This includes 6,500 TMT (Thermo Mechanically Treated) bars, 1000 tonnes of steel plates and 1,500 tonnes of structural.

Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal launches Kritagyata portal for online pension submission and tracking

  • Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal launched a web portal named ‘Kritagyata’ on 1st October 2020.
  • Kritagyata is an online pension submission and tracking system launched to help the pensioners of the state to dispose their pension related claims.
  • The retired government employee can submit the pension related papers on line as well as check the status of his pension.
  • The portal has been created in line with the ‘Bhabhisya’ portal of Government of India.
  • Initially, the Kritagyata portal has been launched as pilot project for the teachers and employees under Inspector of Schools of Kamrup Metropolitan district,
  • It will be replicated to all government employees of the state in all districts in phases.

West Bengal Launches Pathashree Abhijan Scheme To Repair Roads In State

  • West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has launched a new scheme called the Pathashree Abhijan on 01 October 2020.
  • Pathashree Abhijan is a road repair scheme, under which more than 7,000 stretches of roads comprising 12,000 kilometers across the state will be repaired in a mission mode and in a time-bound manner.
  • The list of repairs has been prepared on the basis of all the road related complaints received by the Chief Minister from different parts of the state through the ‘Didi Ke Bolo’ initiative of the state government.

  • This service will be extended to the women’s prison and then to the new jail premises in future.

National Institute Of Naturopathy’s Tribal Unit set up in Pune

  • A 20-bed tribal unit of the National Institute of Naturopathy was inaugurated in Pune’s Ambegaon tehsil by Union AYUSH minister Shripad Naik.
  • It would provide free clinical services to the tribal population in the area.
  • A research unit on tribal practices for health maintenance had also been set up and it will be a “repository of knowledge and will work in areas of education, nutrition and health problems of the tribal population”.

SS Kalpana Chawla Cargo Spacecraft launched by NASA to International Space Station

  • NASA (The National Aeronautics and Space Administration) has launched cargo spacecraft to the International Space Station.
  • The spacecraft named NASA astronaut Kalpana Chawla, the first Indian woman reached the space, for her major participations to human spaceflight.
  • The spacecraft was constructed by a Virginia based company Northrop Grunman.
  • It currently holds space station resupply contract with NASA. It is an aerospace and defence technology company.

Swachhata ke 6 saal, Bemisaal Webinar organized by Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry

  • Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs organized Swachhata ke 6 saal, Bemisaal on the occasion 6th Anniversary Swachh Bharat Mission.
  • As per the Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry, more than 97 per cent of Indian cities have now become Open Defecation Free (ODF).
  • In Swachh Bharat Mission, from a meagre 18 per cent of solid waste processing in 2014, now up to 67 per cent of solid waste is being processed, and more than 77 per cent wards are practising source segregation.

Sofia Vergara tops Forbes’ highest paid actress list 2020

  • The Colombia-born American actress Sofia Vergara, who came to fame with an American TV Show ‘Modern Family’ is the highest paid actresses in the annual list of Forbes’ Highest-Paid Actresses 2020.
  • The 48-year-old actress has topped the list with an earnings of $43 million (equivalent of Rs 315 crore). Most of her earnings came from Modern Family and America’s Got Talent, wherein she is one of the judges.
  • Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie secured the second position ($35 million) while Gal Gadot ($31 million) stood third.
  • None of the Indian actresses have featured on the list for the year 2020.

NSS Report, Time use in India 2019 Survey

  • Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation conducted survey titled Time Use Survey.
  • The main aim of this survey is to estimate the participation of men and women in paid and unpaid activities. The survey was conducted between the period of January 2019 and December 2019.
  • Women’s participation in unpaid domestic services such as cooking, cleaning, household management, for household members is 81.2% each day as compare to 26.1 % for men.
  • Women spend 299 minutes that is almost 5 hours on unpaid domestic services which is thrice as much as men 97 minutes or 1 hour 37 minutes.
  • 2 % of the total population engages in “employment and other related activities. They spend 429 minutes or 7 hours and 9 minutes each day.

ICMR released “What India Eats” report – 31.4% of urban were overweight

  • ICMR (The Indian Council of Medical Research) released the What India Eats Report.
  • ICMR released the report in collaboration with National Institute of Nutrition.
  • As per the report, urban regions in the country consumed more fat than people in rural areas.
  • The urban people of India consumed 51.6 grams of fat per day
  • The rural people consume 36 grams of fat per day
  • Overall obesity was prevalent in 12.5% of population in urban areas and 4.9% in rural areas

  • He was instrumental in India’s diplomatic intervention to remove Mahatma Gandhi’s images on beer bottles of a private company in Israel, Mr Jose, who brought the matter into the public domain.
  • The Award carries a sculpture of Mahatma Gandhi, cash prize of Rs 25,001 and a certificate.

Indian Navy Helicopters Undertake Aerial Seeding Initiative at Visakhapatnam

  • The Indian Navy has partnered with Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) to undertake Aerial Seeding at Visakhapatnam.
  • The aims of this initiative is to enhance the green cover in and around Visakhapatnam.
  • Aerial seeding is a technique in which seeds are sown aerially with the help of drones or helicopter.
  • The aerial seeding programme was inaugurated on 2nd October 2020 at INS Dega at Visakhapatnam by Rajya Sabha MP V Vijayasai Reddy and Vice Admiral Atul Kumar Jain
  • Two UH3H helicopters will be used for this operation.
  • The Naval helicopters will be airdropping 50,000 seed balls weighing approx. 6.25 tonnes in five locations around Visakhapatnam covering an area of nearly 200 acres which are inaccessible by road.

India successfully test-fires new version of nuclear-capable Shaurya Missile from Odisha coast

  • On 3rd October 2020, the DRDO successfully test-fired a new version of the Shaurya surface-to-surface nuclear-capable ballistic missile at Balasore, off the coast of Odisha.
  • The new version of the nuclear-capable missile can strike targets at a range of around 800 kms.
  • The missile would be lighter and easier to operate in comparison with the existing missile.

  • The 16-year-old Visnu shot 251.4 to win the title by a clear margin of two points.
  • The world No. 27 Etienne Germond of France came second followed by Martin Strempfl of Austria at third place.

India Climb to Third in ICC Women’s T20 Team Rankings, topped by Australia

  • The Indian women’s cricket team has overtaken New Zealand to rise to the third spot in the T20 International standings and retained the second position in the ODI chart of the latest ICC rankings.
  • Australia and England retain the top two positions in T20s, their points tally remaining 291 and 280, respectively.
  • The biggest improvement in rankings has been registered by Brazil, who are up 11 places to 27, after a gain of 15 rating points, while the biggest ranking fall has been for Malaysia, who are down from 31st to 38th.

  • Reliance Life Sciences has developed an RT-PCR kit that promises diagnosis of Covid-19 infection in about 2 hours.
  • The kit has been technically validated by ICMR for satisfactory performance.

  • Haji Hussain Ansari, the Minister of Minority Welfare and Registration Department in the Government of Jharkhand, has passed away.
  • He was 73.
  • Ansari was the chairman of Hajj committee Jharkhand.
  • He was the first and only Muslim to become minister in the state.
  • Mr Ansari was a four-time MLA from the Madhupur assembly constituency in Deoghar.

Former Odisha Minister and BJD MLA Pradeep Maharathy passes away

  • Former Odisha Minister and senior BJD MLA Pradeep Maharathy has passed away due to COVID-19 infection. Maharathy was 65-years-old.
  • Maharathy was elected as a MLA seven times from Pipili constituency, out of which five times were on Biju Janata Dal (2000-2019) ticket and once each on Janata Party (1985) and Janata Dal (1990) tickets.
  • He had served as Minister of Panchayati Raj & Drinking Water Supply, Agriculture and Fisheries during his terms in Odisha.
  • Maharathy was honored with the Global Agriculture Leadership Award in 2016 and Krishi Karman Award 2014-15 for his excellent work in the field of agriculture.

Actress Mishti Mukherjee passes away due to kidney failure at 27

  • Bollywood actress Mishti Mukherjee, who has featured in many Hindi,Bengali and Telugu films, and music videos has passed away due to kidney failure.
  • He was only 27 years old.
  • Besides featuring in major Bengali projects, Mishti made her debut in Bollywood with the film Life Ki Toh lag Gayi in 2012 and worked as the lead actress in Subhash Ghai’s 2014 film “Kaanchi: The Unbreakable”.

Veteran Social activist Pushpa Bhave passes away at 81

  • Veteran social activist Prof Pushpa Bhave, also known as the Iron Lady of Mumbai, has passed away following a prolonged illness. She was 81.
  • Bhave has been associated with the Rashtra Seva Dal and democratic movements since her student days.
  • She was also an academician and an intellectual, who fought for the rights of common citizens.
  • She had taken part in the Samyukta Maharashtra movement and the Goa liberation movement.

Second India- Bangladesh Bilateral Navy Exercise Bongosagar Begins in Bay of Bengal

  • The second edition of Indian Navy (IN) – Bangladesh Navy (BN) Bilateral Exercise Bongosagar commenced in Northern Bay of Bengal on 03 October 2020.
  • The Exercise Bongosagar, is aimed at developing inter-operability and joint operational skills between both the navies through conduct of a wide spectrum of maritime exercises and operations.
  • The indigenously built Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvette Indian Naval Ship (INS) Kiltan and the indigenously built Guided-Missile Corvette INS Khukri will participate from India side while Bangladesh Naval Ship (BNS) Abu Bakr, a Guided-Missile Frigate and BNS Prottoy, a Guided-Missile Corvette will participate from that country.
