Reserve Bank of India imposes 11 crore fine on seven PSBs for violating norms

  • The Reserve Bank of India imposed a penalty of ₹11 crores on seven public sector banks for violating norms on current account opening.
  • The banks which includes Allahabad Bank and Bank of Maharashtra have been imposed a fine of Rs 2 crore each, Bank of Baroda, Bank of India, Indian Overseas Bank and United Bank of India have been slapped with fines of Rs 1.5 crore each, while Oriental Bank of Commerce has been imposed with a penalty of Rs1 crore.

State Bank of India and Shanghai becomes first Indian bank to link up with CNAPS

  • State Bank of India’s Shanghai branch linked to China’s National Advanced Payment System (CNAPS).
  • It is the first Indian Bank to operationalize it. The CNAPS, launched in 2008 by the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) provides real-time settlement services for all payments cleared in China.
  • The CNAPS system is complemented by its international counterpart, the CIPS (China International Payments System or Cross-Border Interbank Payment System) launched in 2015
  • Aim: To boosting international use of the Chinese currency, yuan. The participants from multiple countries across the globe participated.

Article 370 scrapped, Jammu & Kashmir to be carved into two Union Territories

  • The Centre has decided to repeal Article 370 and Article 35-A of the Constitution that grants special status to the state.
  • Home minister Amit Shah also decided to bifurcate the state into two Union territories – Jammu and Kashmir, which will have a legislature, and Ladakh, which will be without a legislature.
  • The UT in Ladakh will have no legislature like Chandigarh while the other UT of Jammu and Kashmir will have a legislature like Delhi and Puducherry.

Lalit Kala Akademi celebrates 65th Foundation Day

  • Today on 5th August, National Academy of Art or Lalit Kala Akademi, celebrated its 65th Foundation Day in New Delhi.
  • The event was inaugurated by Culture and Tourism Minister Prahlad Singh Patel.
  • Lalit Kala Akademi or National Academy of Art was established in New Delhi in 1954 by the government.
  • OBJECTIVE: to promote and propagate understanding of Indian art, in and outside the country.
  • The Academy provides scholarships, fellowship programmes and organizes art-related exhibitions in India and overseas.
  • The artwork and painting exhibitions will be open for public till 12th of this month.

  • Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on 4th August inaugurated centenary celebrations of Central library of Patna University.
  • Release a special postage stamp cover to mark the completion of 100 eventful years in the life of the oldest academic library.
  • Naidu also inaugurated Savera Cancer and a multispecialty hospital in Kankarbagh area.

About 35 lakh people so far benefited from Ayushman Bharat Yojana in Chhattisgarh

  • Chhattisgarh is one of the best performing state under Ayushman Bharat Yojana.
  • About 35 lakh people have so far benefited from the scheme in the country of which five lakh are from Chhattisgarh.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched country’s first health and wellness centre under Ayushman Bharat Yojana on April 14 last year,at the remote Jangla village in Maoist affected Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh.
  • More than Five lakh people have so far been benefitted from the Ayusman Bharat scheme.
  • State has utilized more than three hundred crore during the last eight months under this scheme. About one lakh persons in Chhattisgarh have availed treatment for cardiac ailments under this scheme.

HRD Minister inaugurates Technology Expo at IIT Delhi

  • Union HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ inaugurated TechEx – a technology exhibition at IIT Delhi.
  • TechEx was organized to demonstrate products and prototypes developed under the two flagship schemes of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) namely IMPacting Research, INnovation and Technology (IMPRINT) and UchhatarAvishkar Yojana (UAY).
  • The minister also released TechEx Volume containing abstracts of all the IMPRINT and UAY projects.
  • TechEx is a unique effort, which offers an excellent platform to the researchers to showcase their work and inspire them to do their best in their respective domains.

Global Big Data software market will reach $118.52 billion by 2022, Forbes report

  • Forbes reported that the global Big Data software market will have 14% of growth worth $31B in 2019.
  • Earlier, the market was estimated at $23.56 billion in 2015 and is expected to reach $118.52 billion by 2022.
  • 90% of the world’s data was created between 2015 and 2016.
  • The estimated worth of big data industry will be $77 billion by 2023.

Vinesh Phogat wins third successive gold in 53kg

  • Star India grappler Vinesh Phogat has bagged gold in women’s 53kg category of the Poland Open wrestling tournament in Warsaw.
  • The 24-year-old prevailed 3-2 over local wrestler Roksana in the final of the competition.
  • This was her third consecutive gold in the 53 kg category after winning Gold at Grand Prix of Spain and at the Yasar Dogu International at Istanbul, Turkey.

Thailand Open: Satwiksairaj, Chirag 1st Indian doubles pair to win Super 500 title

  • Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty today became the first Indian pair to win a BWF Super 500 badminton tournament.
  • They beat World champions Li Jun Hui and Liu Yu Chen of China in the summit clash of Thailand Open 21-19, 18-21, 21-18 in Bangkok to win the men’s doubles category.

Lewis Hamilton won Hungarian Grand Prix

  • Formula One Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton won the Hungarian Grand Prix
  • He defeated Max Verstappen for a record-extending seventh time
  • He won 62 points clear in the championship.

India test-fires Surface to Air-Missile from Chandipur in Odisha

  • India today successfully test-fired its all weather tracked-chassis Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QR-SAM) from a mobile launcher at launch complex III of the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in Odisha.
  • It was the second developmental trial of the missile in this year from the same test range.
  • The QR-SAM weapon system is a quick reaction, network-centric missile system capable of search-on-the-move.
  • It is jointly developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Bharat Electronics Ltd.
  • QR-SAM system can also engage multiple targets within a range of around 25 to 30 km with two vehicle configuration for area air defence.
  • It is a truck-mounted missile with a 360 degree rotatable, electro-mechanically operated, turret-based launch unit.

Indian Army employs E cars to its Delhi officials

  • The Indian Army has launched an ecological initiative by employing electric cars (E-cars) for the use of Government officials in Delhi.
  • E-cars initiative was launched by the Army in partnership with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EECL) under the Ministry of Power.
  • Electric vehicle technology is an alternative to combat air pollution and to reduce carbon emission footprint. The EESL has played a vital role in providing these e-vehicles to various Government agencies.

ISRO to get Space Situational Awareness Control Centre in Bengaluru

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman K.Sivan laid the foundation stone for the Space Situational Awareness Control Centre in Bengaluru.
  • The Centre aims to protect the high value space assets from space debris’ close approach and collisions. It is an important milestone in the progress of ISRO.

SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

ICMR introduces 2 new TB vaccines, VPM 1002 and Immuvac

  • The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) launched a trial for two new TB vaccines.
  • This is India’s first large-scale TB vaccine trial.
  • Two thousand participants from each of the six states including Delhi, Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana and Karnataka will enroll over the next seven to eight months.
  • Also, seven main centres will have six sub-sites, where these trials will be conducted.

Two new vaccines:

The two new TB vaccines that are introduced by ICMR are:

  • Immuvac manufactured by Cadila Pharmaceuticals
  • VPM 1002 manufactured by Institute of India, Pune

The medicines are to be tested with three testing phases. Based on the results the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare will decide and set the price of the vaccines.

Veteran Gujarati journalist Kanti Bhatt passes away

  • Veteran Gujarati journalist, author and columnist Kanti Bhatt passed away at an age of 88.
  • Kanti Bhatt was born on 15th July 1931 in Sachra village in Bhavnagar state of Gujarat.
  • He also worked as journalist, writer, columnist and editor in various Gujarati publications like Chitralekha, Mumbai Samachar, Janshakti, Sandesh, Yuva Darshan, Jansatta, Vyapar and Abhiyan.

Cricket commentator Anant Setalvad passes away

  • Cricket commentator Anant Setalvad died in Mumbai on 3rd
  • He was in his mid-80s, according to sources in the Cricket Club of India, of which Setalvad was a long-term member.

Jai Ram Thakur pays tribute to Dr. YS Parmar on his 113th birth anniversary on 4th August

  • Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur paid tributes to the first Chief Minister of the state Dr. YS Parmar on his 113th birth anniversary during the state-level function organised at Peterhoff, in Shimla.
  • He was known as the founder of Himachal Pradesh.
